I just started learning bass, and Cage is the first song I'm attempting to learn. Is it better to use a pick? I noticed this isn't one of your most recent videos, but I'm really impressed. I can't nearly play the song as fast as you, and I have problems stretching my fingers.

I've used both techniques, picks and fingers, and I can say it sounds better with a pick, even Toshiya plays it with a pick. As for the problems you have stretching your fingers, don't worry, I have really short fingers, but, as you will read everywhere, practice is the solution. Get your fingers used to the strings and fretboard, even I didn't know my fingers could move that fast before recording the video. Hope I could help, regards~

Then here's my advice: Use your fingers. There's so much more you can get out of it than if you were to use a pick.

Don't ask, "Why do guitarists use picks then?" Well, who said they have to? They use fingerpicking often, it's just more common to bass because it gives a nice, low, clean sound.

Plus fingerpicking looks a lot cooler. So do it.
