  • ANIMAL CRUELTY

  • Maybe now they can discover the vegetable fly...

  • can we now start to outsmart the mosquitos spreading malaria?

  • Comment removed

  • that llady is annoying

  • the lady talking sounds fat.

  • it'd be much easier to swat them if we could get them to hover on command like that

  • i have never seen such a huge waste of money taken so seriously, it's absolutely ridiculous that anyone would bother about a fucking fly

  • @Zyanerak much of our understanding of modern neuroscience and development is based on the fruit fly.

  • This is the beginning of a "Fly Matrix" where flies will be born in captivity and fed sugar through straws while fully believing they're actually flying around in a real world...

Let's fight for their freedom while we still can!

  • hehehehehheehhehsahjosdahsodhasodahodahsodasdasdasdasdasd

  • Yes, but what about the psychological effect on flies. Think of their families. How it will effect their culture. Science must really rethink this before continuing.

  • YEA those ppl always thinking about the future of the human being simply don't realize how much trouble they are causing to the whole world by phucking up those flies families. keep up the good job man lmao

  • @rafael2k7 its a fly... or you may just be trolling w/e

  • its a fly...

  • It starts at this level and then has an effect that no one will claim because it would effect studies of animals. Denying the truth that it does effect humans only not an established nor ever will be researched fact.

Basically science doesn't care how sick it makes humans as long as no one can link them to it. Likewise with government. Both are ignorant to reality in a way that would tie them in. Science is behind reality. And they don't care to catch it. It doesn't pay. Ignorance pays.

  • lol, narrator sounds like an idiot

  • Hunter Killers hear we come lol

  • haha clever.

  • isnt this the music for "How do they make it" on discovery?

  • "How It's Made"? no it isn't.

  • I think they missed the point, how will confusing a fruit fly help develop areal vehicles? This seems to me like a bit of curios, just fr the hell of it kind of thing lol

  • By studying how the fly stops, hovers, etc, to different stimulus, the engineers will use similar mechanics in areal vehicles.

  • I suppose types of aerodynamics maybe, but There will never be an arial vehicle that utilises that type of flight.

  • There may never be an aerial vehicle that has beating wings, but I think they are looking more at how the wings are changing orientation in order to change lift and thrust to respond to various stimulus. Take a look at the clip where they have draw a red line to indicate the angle, or pitch, of the fly. This can be similarly done by aerial vehicles to hover and maneuver. Of course, helicopters already do this so I'll be curious to see what new information they actually gain.

  • Me too. Beating wing flight is very complicated mechanically and my not be suitable for aircraft. However, your comment intrigues me :) It will be interesting to see what new technologies will be created and implemented as a result of studying how the sings react to flight. I took this video as an evaluation of the feasability of beating wings on aircraft lol. Thanks for the info.

  • In 1978 the Soviet Air Force developed a fleet of 10 aircraft that operated with beating wing technology. They were called the Vladarskov KRG's.

  • Just out of curiosity, was the project scrapped by any chance?

  • @Arkalanos cant find any info on Vladarskov KRG's

  • pwned

  • lol all we need is the precise numbers and a fly sized virtual helmet and we're set

  • "sure it's cool, but why?"

don't you get it? life isnt always about using things to develop new technology, sometimes its just about doing something cool, just fot enjoyment. try to be in touch with your artistic side sometime :)

  • I can imagine what the some of the more childish scientists do with this

  • what do you imagine they do?

  • What would you do with the power to influence the speed of a fruit fly? SUPER FAST!!!! slow! FAAAAAAAST! STOP!

  • well one thing you could do is make a video of it and put that on youtube and get like 30,000 views. that would be pretty cool

  • 30k views isn't hard, lol.

Complete crap can get 30k..trust me, i've done so

  • emphasis wasnt on the 30k, but the fact that youve gotta keep an open artistic mind about things, because developing technology probably isnt the definitive meaning of life, and sometimes you just have to just sit back and enjoy the fact that we can do stupid pointless things like control a fly

  • Now all we need to do is stick a mind control device on a moth... shit somebody beat me to it

  • can they make the fly go dizzy somehow?

  • lol the fly thinks it's flying rly fast but actually it's stationary. that's pretty cool.

didn't know they use their eyes for that rather than their touch

  • This system can be used to automate robots on space exploration for example

"Their manner of flight has already been shown to be impracticable as of now."

on this May's NatGeo it showed an article of a researcher who managed to create a robotic fly which could make 90º degrees turns (that would a teer up apart a jet)

  • how can u NOT think that was gunna happen? its brain is mad small and WHAT THE HELL! thats not science, thats stupid people with a terrible theory and way too much money to dump into a very useless experiment... how about you make ME a box with pink lights to tell just how much i give a shit about fruit flys?

  • almost every single robot or gadget used are pretty much copy of a fauna and flora, just like the syringe and such. This discovery has a great use; specially in space exploration since a autonomous robot is a must.

In other news, your just a random fag who doesn't care about science

  • Wait whoa whoa what's all this complaints of weapons for the military? She said nothing of weapons or military. It was just an aerial drone, most likely to be used for reconnaissance (if the military used it, which they will).

  • space exploration

  • Why does it all come down to some new toy for the military, thats all we use scientific breakthroughs for, weapons

  • many of the biggest scientific breakthroughs (which are useful to manking) from the XX: the internet, computers, GPS system, cellphones were created by the military research facilities.

  • Well yeah, but if we want peace there is a simple solution, STOP MAKING SO MANY GOD DAMN

    WEAPONS

  • we can always use robots to mourn less people. world peace is unachievable.

  • but there's good money in weapons...and isn't that what life is about?

  • only in russia, my friend

  • The Internet was created by scientists. They wanted to use it to share information and discoveries and such, but it soon took over the world because it's so useful.

  • First connection between computers was createad by DARPA (Defense Advanced Reseach Projects Agency) and it was known as DARPAnet. And yeah, it was used for communication purposes since you can intercept radio signs easily

  • Okay,

  • Oh cool.:) I didn't know that.

  • will never happen.

  • Worst narrating voice ever?

  • Hmmmm.

  • what does that make you?

  • awesome

  • today fruit flys.., tomorrow.., THE WORLD!!

    mua ha ha ha!!

  • muahaha the secret of the fruit flies will soon be ours!

  • blow your nose god

  • That's pretty cool. Um One complaint, and probably the only complaint, as I think you guys are the best, you need to fix the audio levels of your videos. The intro will come on and it will be much louder than everything else on the computer, and then the video will be much too quiet, and then the outro is much too loud again! This video was kind of the opposite, the intro was really quiet so I turned it up, and then the video was way too loud! Keep up the good work, but don't take my hearing too

  • Very interesting. :)

  • GREAT!!

  • It's been a while New Scientist- but this one was cool.

  • i wonder if you could get a whole swarm of them

  • tell a lobotomised bee to go sting the dictator with polonium while asleep...

  • Before or after most of us stick it straight up your arse

  • Um, who doesn't measure their speed by how fast things go past? (assuming you're not in a vehicle equipped with a speedometer)

  • Fruitflies aren't "who", they're a "what", and they're pretty simple. They could have as easily measured their speed by feeling air flow. So now we can control fruitflies and examine them, to base our drones on.

  • Whether or not fruitflies are a "who" or a "what" depends on whether you classify them more as objects or individuals. They don't fit neatly into either, so that's a stupid "point" to try to make. Especially since I wasn't referring to fruitflies, but pretty much anything mobile with eyes. It wouldn't make sense for them to determine their speed based on air flow since they are naturally found outside where the wind would render that useless.

  • And I'm fully aware of the applicibility of this "discovery", I'm just mocking that it hadn't been "discovered" yet.

  • Oh God.

And I still hate her voice.

  • who doesnt!

  • i love her voice, hah, but thats just my opinion

  • Once again, scientists have outsmarted a fruit fly!

  • silly fruit fly, you cannot keep all your secrets from us for much longer...

  • @jonesr999 Yeah. What they need to outsmart is more aggressive animals! Agreed?

  • remote controll dragon fly with a flame thrower/gernade laucher plz

  • nice
