If I manage to get my rx7 built and to the 2012 races I will give you a ride if you would be interested. I am trying like hard to get it built in time but I am not sure if it will be done or not. But if you see a 85 rx7 with a 350 there just come ask.
@pimbuk Thanks for the comment, nah I don't race, strictly record. I've ridden a few times. It feels like being on a roller coaster than can go anywhere.
Very nice video, did you use manual focusing the whole time? looks really good, I know it can be pretty difficult w/ DSLR especially when your aperture is pretty open like yours is. Also FPS 24 or 60? I uploaded a video yesterday from a local autocross and also attending another event in a couple weeks so just trying to get better at it.
@arbachu Thanks for the comment! With this video I think I mostly used the panasonic 14-140mm lens and I think I left it in continuous AF. I also used an OM 300mm lens and for that I think I set the focus close to infinity and stopped down so more would be in focus.
I shot at 60 FPS and edited in a 30P then turned off frame blending for all my clips. I decided on this speed so I could slow it down to either 50% to get true slow motion at the correct frame rate, or I could slow it down to 40%
@bmxky to get the equivalent and they the footage would seem like 24FPS with some frames doubled up.
I really like shooting with DSLRs, they do have some downsides like the lack of built in ND filters, but you can always buy a variable ND filter for the lens. Also the audio monitoring options at the moment are fairly lacking, but for the price they are incredible.
@bmxky yeah that seemed to be a problem when i tried to get that depth of field but it was way to over exposed, seems like ND filters is a must. Focus was the biggest issue for me and im surprised to hear that you kept it on continues since other then current D7000 i don't know many DSLRs that can do automatic continuous focus in video mode that well. I got 60D specifically for video shooting but maybe i should of went with GH1 lol
@arbachu Yeah check out variable ND filters instead of the regular ones. Lots of people write the 4/3rds cameras off for some reason but they incredibly good for video. When I'm shooting on a paying job I always use manual focus, because even as good as the GH cameras are with the video lenses they will miss focus sometimes. To help with your focus issues you may want to check out some LCD magnifiers. At work we have a 7D and a 5D MII and the magnifiers help out a ton.
@bmxky One of the big pluses to the Canon and Nikon cameras over the micro 4/3rds is that they have way more lenses...although I believe they will all or mostly all go to a mirrorless system sometime in the future and at that time they will probably have to update all their lenses.
I could talk about this stuff for a long time. Either way though, viewers care much more about the content than the equipment being used so nice to hear of someone else into video and autocross.
Looks like I found the right forum lol. I was just browsing autocross videos and I run into M4/3's talk. I myself own a GH2 and am planning on making a short film for my school's FSAE team in the near future. Nice to know that others are interested in DSLR video work too.
Yeah, unfortunately I was working too much this year to make it out to any of the fun events. This is still a pretty well put together video. I'm hoping to put some new style into a fun project for next year. nine months to prepare. If anyone has ideas let me know. Angles/cameras/editing/support/technology/music let me know.
@skater1on1 Too kind. Watching this stuff was really awesome especially to be so close to awesome sports cars. Being able to record it in HD with under $5k worth of gear is amazing.
@chickenfight44 Thanks, Jib work is fun. Then combine it with Affter Effects and you can make something very cool. First song is from a band called "Matt and Kim"
Thanks for the comment...I haven't even told anyone this is up yet. Youtube is true HD and the video(once you click the HD button) looks very close to they way I transcoded the file from Premiere.
But yes, once hitting HD I had to wait probably 30 seconds for the file to play back smoothly.
that guy in s13 was pretty good

Why play a song when there is a car racing? That should be all the music needed.

I got a ride at an autoX in my friend's miata,
those cones are confusing to me, and the parking lot lines..
you should take a ride at a track,
beware you might get carsick..
regarding HD,
youtube shows it in 480P,
(unless u fullscreen or pop/stretch in a new window)
I like vimeo, cause you can go fullscreen and turn off 'scaling'
