Add to that - I prefer the way she sings 'I've only been PRETENDING!' putting emphasis on 'pretending' - thats the heart-breaking bit along with the fact that 'the world is full of happiness that i have never known' - she has a balance between the power ballad moments and the soft, innocent and sweetness that we can all associate with when feeling in love. Shame she hasn't had more recognition - took me a while to find this version anyway.
This is my ideal Eponine. She sounds soft, vulnerable, has a lot of bottled up anger but its not like she over pronounces each word like i find lea salonga does. Some say that Frances has a whiny quality which i think is fair enough for her character - shes not meant to look and sound lovely in my opinion. The desperation is perfect in her voice here and the anger and emotion comes out just perfectly reaching its climax brilliantly at 3:29.
She's like a mix of Frances and Lea. Her voice is soft and nice like Lea, but has that high pitch quality of Frances, and pronounces it almost exactly like her, too! I think Kaho is fantastic in this song! :D Truthfully, I find her better than Ms. Ruffelle herself. :\
In the production of les Mis I saw recently the girl playng Eponine's microphone failed & she had to sing the whole thing without a mic. She was actually really good. She projected her voice really well, but it was still a shame. She sounded quite similar to this actually.
@CommentingPhantomess Was it not working just for this part? When my parents went to see Phantom of the Opera, Christine's mic wasn't working the WHOLE time and they were so mad!! They could hardly hear her. I felt bad too cause that totally ruined their experience. I think of only wonderful memories of my first time seeing the Phantom but my mother still rants about hers. :p
I prefer this Eponine too...to me, this version has more...emotion to it than the others I've heard, but that's just my opinion...I don't really prefer more...husky sounding women singers.
And, you really can't fault the slight accent...I mean, the woman doesn't really speak English, so I think it's quite a feat...
ConfuciousLost, i'm assuming that since you have all the CSR versions of all the les mis songs that you own it?? i'm looking to buy it, and i wanted to know your opinion on it; i'm debating buying either the CSR or the 10th anniversary one.
I do own the CSR. I have heard both versions, the CSR and the 10th Anniversary and personally I prefer the CSR; however, both versions are very good. So whatever your decision you will not be upset.
@daniellerobyn I'm deciding the same think, but I think I'll buy a mixture of several soundtracks. The CSR has so many songs that aren't on the others, but I'm not too keen on the cast apart from Eponine and Javert. I will probably end up with several versions of some of the songs.
This is my favorite Eponine ever! She doesn't over-pronounciate (sp) her words like Lea, but she still is understandable. That's what Eponine should sound like.
Best backing orchestra, best Eponine.
