Lauren Scruggs Hit by Airplane Propeller! (12/6/11 - #181)

Plain and simple (no pun intended), that pilot should have shut down his engine. No good pilot ever lets passengers in or out of his aircraft with propellers whirring around. This was a tragedy that easily could have been prevented if he had just shut down the motor.

I think she was getting her hair out of her face with her hand and her hand being severed probaby stopped her from being killed, as soon as she was struck she would of dropped to the ground. no time for anything else.

I just heard about this from reading something online and I still don't get how you can walk into a propeller, regardless if it's on or off. Most folks should know not to walk towards the front or back of a plane unless it's shut off and there is a reason to go there. You have to not be paying attention to do something so stupid. It's a plane so obviously you should be cautious whether it's engine is running or not.

Every pilot I have EVER talked with agrees that this is pilot negligence. Regardless of how it happened, the pilot is always responsible for his/her passengers from the moment they step on to the tarmac, until the moment they step off (especially if the passengers are lay people. A friend who flies a 4-person piper won't even let us open the door until his plane is completely shut down.

Some people are very inconsiderate. It was dark outside. The propellers move so fast that they are hard enough to see in the daytime let alone at night. It wasn't a lit area. The aircraft she was in only has a door on the right side....if she went back to thank the pilot, the prop would have hit her RIGHT side......Once out, she she would have to walk around or under the wing strut, My theory is she walked around the strut, then towards the building, and just mis-judged her distance or failed to take in the fact that the prop was even there.

I think she walked into the propellor from the front of the plane, she would have noticed the air blowing hard if she was behind the a/p, b/c spinning propeller blows incredible amount of air to the back of the a/p. Heard she came back to the "Thanks" to the pilot.

From the front, the prop has stripes painted on the blade tips for a visual indication (not that it helps at dark), but from the back, the props are painted flat black to keep glare from disturbing the pilots vision. Also, not very much wind at all if the engine is idling

The thing I'm best at is drawing. I don't know what I would do with myself if I couldn't make art anymore. I think that'd be pretty hard to accomplish, though. I'm best known for drawing, so loosing my right hand would be terrible... I had an operation in my brain, and lost some of my vision due to that(downright corner, both eyes)... Some time, when I was in the hospital, I sort of lost my hearing, so I couldn't listen to music... I guess... I love soccer :D its how i roll, but i broke both of my ankles and couldn't play for a year which left me devostated. I dealt with this by playing video games of soccer, watching alot of soccer and by playing sports which dont requite the use of my legs (table tennis). NO responsible pilot would ever let passengers get on or off of a plane without shutting the propeller off before. It's safety 101 when it comes to flying and why the pilot did not think of this is beyond me. I am not sure how she walked into it, but it is possible that it was unfortunately just a brief moment of absentmindedness. I feel really sorry for her and her family. In this manner you'd have two types of people: Those that can adjust and those who can't. If they can't adjust, then that path leads to either a struggle to find any kind of meaning in life, or to a choice to commit suicide.
