The limitations of JJ Abrams imagination are beginning to show in his movies. This thing looks similar to that red skinned creature in Star Trek. I wasn't at all impressed with this movie mainly because of the boring video cam effect that's becoming common place in "quick buck" Hollywood films, and the brainless teenagers. It's pretty much impossible to relate to any aspect of this movie.

Its kinda creepy but they did a tie in with the montser with this thing called "The Bloop." Back in the 80's the navy was doing these radar scans for soviet subs and they found somthing that was 300 feet long on the bottom of the ocean. The scar thing was, it was and organic life form (a living thing) so the produers tied in the Bloop makng it clover. They call it the bloop because that was the noise it made on the radar and we haven't heard it again. Its on Wikipedia and some other sites

Its a satellite that fell out of orbit belonging to the company that Rob was going to Japan to join. The satellite fell into the ocean, and thats what disturbed/awoke the monster, its not an alien. I know that NONE of that was addressed in the movie, but a lot of the movies backstory and clues were left to be found among numerous viral websites.
