  • Oh yeah....the tall black guy freaking awsome too!

  • Other then Joni, Michael Brecker is awsome! makes the band mes think.

  • Michael Brecker (the sax player) is the life of the party in this group!

  • I LOVE her voice!

  • love this song.. too bad someone's cut into my channels so I can't watch...

    anyways I still think it's great...tweet!!!!!

  • I guess you had to be there...

  • oh i love this song

  • ... a song, sung, by singers...........

  • huh?...your both idiots!

  • It's spelled "you're", idiot! :)

  • she killed it ..murdered the song, why o why!?!?!?!

  • oh, i hate this.

this has totally ruined the song for me :/

  • wow i love this song sooo much!

  • THAT's just great fun ::)))))

    Thnx

  • hat the FUK u killed the hole song lemme go listen to frankies version so he ud bring it bak

  • Brecker's sax line is SMOKIN'

  • joni does it all

  • Aside from the Faux outrage of the Frankie Lyman fans, this is just a great cover.

This is not exactly a Soul Train Special that only blacks can sing.

BTW this is a bit different for the Persuasions too....they do it all...but started as an a cappella group in the 60s and are just about the best known a cappella group.

Even the great Nylons acknowledge the influence.....

More than just a stylist, or just a folk singer, Joni can sing "straight" and have some fun.

  • nevermind the frankie lymon version...it's nice but everyone needs to hear the Beach Boys' cover of this song----INCREDIBLE!!!

  • This song is fun. What is wrong with someone like Joni having fun? What a gem! I love it. Thanks for posting.

  • I was feelin' kinda down, and this just lifted me right back up. Wow, and wow, again.

  • What a great job Joni and the Persuasions do on this 1956 hit by Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers!

  • A fun & happy side of Joni I haven't seen before.

Nicely entertaining, although a few of the Persuasions' harmonies were a little off-key.

  • true this title but thank goodness one can also switch off and move on and not be in love- it is a simple choice!!! To be in love or not but once out of love then out of love forever but seems some do not wish one to forget someone and move on!!!!

  • Another Joni Michell masterful performance ; Nice to see a great mix of talent work out so well. Soulful, indeed.

  • Feel it! This is wonderful!

  • Joni Mitchell is a highly known singer from yesteryear. How can anyone criticise her when she is practicing racial harmony with the song? Give her a break! She's got a great voice, only the jealous could discredit it

  • "it is something of a curiousity to me that caucasian musicians, in attempting black music, often get the phrasing askewed just enough that it doesn't sound quite right".

rennzzo, where were you when Charles Mingus needed your advice?

  • Remember it's live it was a guy who sang it orignaly and it was probably better suited to his voice , I think she sings it really well the backing barbershop singers are a bit flat at times, slightly disorganised, and go try to over complicate the parts they are singing, it makes it sound too fast and I think she was trying too keep up! Thats if I'm being critical, but it was really good! Please excuse my spelling!

  • for a folk singer she did decently

  • "decently" !!!

I wish you could fully appreciate such a talented woman!!!

And I don't think Joni Mitchell is actually what we call a "folk singer". Just because she's composing songs and interprets them with a folk guitar ??!!

NO, I think that, right from the beginning of her artistic career, her inspiration was free-jazzy, both in terms of music and lyrics (continuous flow).

Just name all the great jazz musicians who played with her.

  • I was replying to a commenter who said that she "fucking sucked", so I was actually defending her.

I think Joni Mitchell is amazing. One of my favorites for sure, but this is not her best performance.

  • Sorry !!! I'm glad you appreciate such a great artist and defend her. I misunderstood you, sorry again.

And I do agree, this is not where I prefer her.....

  • i hope everyone will forgive my ranting, but i post my comments from a musician's perspective. oh, and let us not fool ourselves, the world is full of fantastic caucasian musicians.

  • the original artist, the arrow, sold all rights to his hit to buster poindexter and, sadly, it was the remake that was exposed to the mainstream audience. the original is far, far better. perhaps this is what the previous posters meant to express.

  • years ago i went to see a movie where a cover of the calypso "hot, hot, hot" was featured. coming from the land where this genre was invented, i was immediately put off by it: it wasn't just the singing, it was everything else--the horns, the drums, guitars were all phrased rather "hop and drop" as we say in the caribbean.

  • it is something of a curiousity to me that caucasian musicians, in attempting black music, often get the phrasing askewed just enough that it doesn't sound quite right.

  • well, the fact remains that if one takes away the stature of joni mitchell as a singer/songwriter of original work, much of which is quite astounding, this cover performance can, at best, be described as mediocre.

  • Damn good!!!!!!

  • Listen guys! Charles Mingus loved Joni and wanted to collabarate with her! She is in tune with feelings! The race thing is relevant but in this case it's the music and Joni's sense is amazing...listen to 'Mingus'!

  • What a stupid comment what about Alison Moyet, Elkie Brooks, Kiki Dee, Dusty Springfield, Paul Young, Michael Bolton and Mick Hucknall who could sing better than a lot of black singers.

  • Yeah what about them aren't those the ones that failed at stealing the music?

  • Not at all they didn't fail they are all and in the case of the late great Dusty were successful.

  • Just because you invade another races culture doesn't mean you're good at their art form believe me African Americans sit back and laugh at how undeveloped your voice and dancing skills are,you guys look very self exalted and haughty which makes it even more funny lol

  • Shows you then how dumb some African Americans are because I've heard and seen some crap black singers and dancers and your racist remarks show your lack of intelligence. It was a black man who said to Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield when he heard them sing that they were righteous and from then on in they were known as the Righteous Bros. So why would he say that if he didn't recognise talent you generalise, there is crap black singers and dancers as there is crap white ones grow up?

  • Lol Wayyyyy more crap white singers then black are you kiding me?White people are the only race of people that'll take another races culture and declare themselves King of it,Elvis was half as good as Little Richard and didn't didn't get acknowledged as much as him you know why?because he's black which is funny because Rock and Roll is Black made don't talk racism to me please..Michael Jackson (the best performer of all times) had to super man his way on MTV because of the racism their...

  • Well I never rated Elvis and I take your point about more white singers being worse than bad black singers but I suppose as there is more white people than black ( certainly in the UK) there would be but you're missing the point and you do sound racist. There was dreadful treatment of singers like Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald etc. but it wasn't prevalent in Jacksons time. I'll say again you generalise blacks don't have a monopoly on singing you know.

  • what is the point of this arguement?

  • Why do you ask, the point is I'm not prepared to let CStarz608 get away with making stupid racist comments.

  • i ask because i can. i think that he is a bigoted twit and shouldn't say anything thats rascist, but argueing with him isnt helping things. all it does is give him the satisfaction of knowing that he irritated someone, and thats all that he wanted to do.

  • yeah, you can claim michael jackson....he was good, but you must also take responsibility for that disaster puff daddy. *LOL*

  • Agree...'Fools' was a fun, beautiful song...but really listen to the woman who Charles Mingus chose to collaborate with...she is sly & nuanced, smooth & full of heart and soul...and technically able to hold her own with anyone in the buisness. Love, Briar

  • "This singer"..?! This isn't just any singer but Joni Mitchell. One of the greatest female singers throughout the 1970s. Maybe her performance on this song isn't spectacular, but try and listen to some of her other stuff. She's fantastic.

  • Yuck. Sorry, I love this song, but this singer just doesn't go with it.

  • dreadfull insulting to frankie

  • why do birds sing so gii? not gay?

  • i totally agree with you!!!

  • Nice vid!

  • thank you excellent

  • Love her Canadian accent, which is quite pronounced here on this old standard. (I'm English). Pity the backing group didn't get the doo-wop quite right, but who really cares? Enjoyable, fun number. Thanks for posting it.

  • Uh....she has an accent? I cant hear anything. Of course, I'm canadian.

  • i dont hear any accent here... that said, i am french!

  • Sweet! Thanks for posting!
