The only way it could be MORE centralized than a nationalized military is for a single private militia or militia-alliance to gain international renown and operate as the only (And thus, at that point, nationalized) military for those nations.

I'm amazed that anyone is trying to make a big deal out of this snippet. The fact is, we actually do remain a dominant military superpower, and the fact is that when conflicts break out we actually do tend to get pulled into them -- I gather from the points left out of this little snippet here the president was talking about the need to take measures to stabilize unstable regions so that conflicts don't break out in the first place. It's helpful and honest to provide the context for the snippet.

"Whether we like it or not" is a simple phrase to appease the members of all sides of the military debate (personally, I believe the US military should be privatized, but that brings up other controversies).
And besides--does it really matter how Obama feels? It's not like he has any power anyways.

The only way it could be MORE centralized than a nationalized military is for a single private militia or militia-alliance to gain international renown and operate as the only (And thus, at that point, nationalized) military for those nations.

I'm amazed that anyone is trying to make a big deal out of this snippet. The fact is, we actually do remain a dominant military superpower, and the fact is that when conflicts break out we actually do tend to get pulled into them -- I gather from the points left out of this little snippet here the president was talking about the need to take measures to stabilize unstable regions so that conflicts don't break out in the first place. It's helpful and honest to provide the context for the snippet.

In my opinion, the worst thing that could have happened to the slaves was to be around all those stupid southerners for so many years. Africans came here and they worked like dogs. But after a while, they saw how lazy and stupid the southerners were and they figured "Hell, why bust my ass?" If the north had beaten the cowardly south down sooner, the ex-slaves would still retain their hard working roots to this day.

We spend more on Medicaid, Medicare and CHIP than we do on the military budget and we spend about as much on Social Security. These are facts. And while I'm thankful for your appreciation of us brave soldiers, VA health care and exemplary are rarely used in the same sentence.
