what happened is that high elves where totally a diff race and they joined forces with the alliance do to like minded views. but where night elves wanted to keep the balance of power some of the high elves where greedy and went of as much power they could grab. hence why the sunwell was made. at this point the ties that held the high elves (sunwell elves) started to fray and soon broke off of the alliance. kel thas or some thing led his elves to join illaden to quest 4 more power

Kael'Thas brought his people to Illidan to attempt to rid themselves of their addiction to magic, because they were use to having the Sunwell there, before It was destroyed. The High Elves were not greedy, whatsoever, they were reckless with their arcane power. And so they had different views than the Night Elves. Which is why they don't like each other and they broke from the ally because the Night Elves banned the use of Arcane magic.

After the scourge came by however the Alliance was treating them badly so they turned to the Horde.

before illidan wanted to help in stopping the horde, but dumb ass mirana and furion thought illidan was consumed by evil and told illidan to never come back / exiled! .. felt betrayed, illidan summoned the lost elves (Naga) as mentioned , and start a campaign to stop arthas w/ the alliance interfering!..blood elves as mentioned, with no place in the world teamed up with illidan .. blha blah .. illidan lost to arthas, arthas having lich king's armor set ! (riegn of chaos and frozen throne).

a long time ago(lorewise) the high elves were night elves. eventually, stuff happened, they became night elves. then, the high elves went to war with the drakkari(i think it was the drakkari i think...) they turned to the humans for help.

awhile later, they went to war again, but when the humans were dicks, they were forced to turn to the naga for help against the scourge. at some point, the scourge blasted quel'thalas, creating the dead scar and destroying the sunwell

after this, the high elves realized that they had become addicted to arcane magic, and made another sunwell....however, by that point, their numbers had been decimated. the remaining high elves dubbed themselves sin'dorei(blood elves) in honor of their fallen comrades, and flocked to the banner of the young prince kael'thas sunstrider.

at some point, kael'thas had a vision from somebody that the hope for his people lay in outlands, so he took the most elite of his warriors, and headed to outland, promising to return to his people. this is where WoW game lore begins. once in outland, kael'thas and his allies illidan stormrage and lady vashj took over outland, and kael'thas began to go crazy. illidan gave him a vial of eternity to protect, yadda yadda yadda.

eventually, a large portion of kael's forces left him to side with the naaru of shattrath, and became what is now the Scryers.

meanwhile the remaining blood elves in azeroth have allied with the horde, since when they allied with the naga instead of the humans, the humans saw it as a betrayal. after that, they were left with no choice but to befriend the enemies of the alliance--the horde.

there are still high elves left, but they are still allied with the alliance. you can see them around.
