Phoenix was a horrible circuit. By 1991, the stands were half-empty for the race. I hope that American F1 fans come to Austin. BTW, magical Senna lap.
SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU STUPID FUCKING KRAUTS - JESUS FUCKING CHRIST - THIS WAS SENNA - SENNA - SENNA - ON A QUALI LAP - NOTHING IN THE WHOLE HISTORY OF F1 MORE EXTREME THAN SENNA ON A QUALI LAP AND YOU CRAPPED ALL OVER IT WITH YOUR SHIT COMMENTARY - FUCK YOU - FUCK YOU!!
God i wish americans liked formula one...i watch every race on tv, and in phoenix we used to have it but then not enough people showed up:( so sad. Would kill to go to a race.
@LacosTacosPacos I'm with you man. We used to have it here in Detroit as well, but I highly doubt they'll ever come back to this crime infested city. I'd also kill to witness an F1 race. I was looking at the ticket prices for Monaco... some seats are close to $1000. Throw in flight + hotel, and now you're looking at an expensive trip, likely to never happen in my lifetime :-(
WILLIANS: Powered by a 3.5 litre V10 Renault engine, the car was the most technically sophisticated on the grid, featuring a semi automatic gearbox, active suspension, traction control and for a brief period anti-lock brakes.
all those bumps. the drivers had to work so much harder back then 1000 % was far more fun to watch , only lacking video quality but this adds nostalgia.
They had to work harder in some areas, but overall it wasn't different.
If anything it was easier.
With plenty of shaddy teams, plenty of shitty cars that didn't even have carbon brakes (top teams not included), and plenty of pay drivers with no physical training were plenty on the grid, it made Senna and Co. look better then they were.
BTW cameras didn't have stabilizers back then, today they do.
And the suspensions of today are just as stiff or worse.
that's not what f1 drivers say. i only say what i have heard as i am not an f1 driver myself. The tracks back then were not so smooth as now ,pheonix & mexico for example. have you ever seen a race on those tracks? And by the way i am not a sticking up for senna just because he happens to be in this video , no mater what car you were in, you would get blurred vison and even bruises on certain tracks. today's racing is difficult too ,as you still need to drive on the limit. yawn.
bad teams-pay drivers?this was the most competitive era of F1!
about physical training what can I say ,Senna literally inveted that!
And the shit about the cameras and stabilizers and all that, just look at the helmet of a modern driver on an onboard take,it hardly moves.
F1 cars are easier to drive today than it was back then just like the F1 cars of the 70es were harder than the 80es and it goes one.Like every simple road car!
The bumps are still there at a lot of circuits. Watch the driver's head in isolation on modern onboards and you'll see them getting jittered and buffeted around like Senna is in this onboard footage. The use of magnetically and fluid stabilized cameras takes a way a great deal of the "feel" of these old onboards. They started using stabilized cameras around 1996.
I was fortunate enough to attend this race. I sat at one complex for most of the day during quali; he was visually faster and smoother thru the complex than any other driver. God Speed, Ayrton!
i have another explanation: in mid 80s McLaren was sureley the best car during race, with chassis saving tyres (was the key those years as turbos raped tyres) but wasn't good with qualifying tyres. A qualifying tyre can cover some lacks in chassis quality when maximizing performance. Even 84 McLaren won 12 races, but in qualifying Brabham was better. Similar things happend in the following years. Senna had great racing cars only in 88 and 89. 90 and 91 the car in racing trim was not as good as..
no mowerman437, it has nothing to do with qualifying engines as driving did not change. simply with qualifying tyres they did have only 2 shots (1+1). so there extreme concentration was necessary. with your mind power...but there is also a more technical reason. MP4/6 was not as good as Williams FW14, but with qualifying tyres there was little difference. why? it has to do with aerodynamic confirmation and weight distribution. on one lap super soft qualifyers deliver the lacking grip.
Sorry. You are wrong. Qualifying engines played a big part in qualifying and that is why Sunday morning warm up was a better idea of what the race may be like. If qualifying engines had nothing to do with it, then why would they use them......
unlogic, mowerman437. your last statment is simply confusing. they used qualifying engines while they where more performing. it's clear when you don't use it and your competitor does, you have a disadvantage. our topic was the relative difference (the difference between one competitor and another) and not the absolute difference (which is very similar to every competitor). sunday morning warm up was indeed a good indicator for race performance, but the key were the tyres, not the engines.
161 starts 41 wins why count poles and not the wins and whatcan schumacher do about he is born to late for the manuel gear shift he drove a view races with it and all ready beat piguet so schumacher is no fart i love them both they are so good both greatest to me if we want to know whowas better we need to see them drive in the same car and both on the time the were the bestand watch but it cant because a true legend died rip ayrton
heres another one for all you clowns out there who think schumey was the best .
m.schumacher 248 starts 68 poles
a.senna 161 starts 65 poles if this schumacher fela is so good how come he he only achieved 3 more poles than senna but entered 87 races more than senna .
senna also drove cars with manual gearshift for the most part of his career .shumacher didnt .its no contest my dear boys .statistics dont mean a thing to me just something for commentators to talk about during a race,
Sure, in modern F1. But back then, how many times did Prost not win from pole? He has more race wins than pole positions, with Senna it's the reverse.
prost was called the professor for a reason, he thought his way through races he knew when to push and when to save his car, he didnt have the outright speed that the likes of senna or mansel had but his thinking often got him through the field
yes probably pole positions don't get you points but they do get you a fair amount of money since the car and the driver is displayed one more day in the weekend...sponsors love pole positions ...so do teams because they display superiority...do never forget that the main goal of motorsport is not points but money!!..so all Schumacher fans should think twice b4 they start talkin so much BS
this senna guy is the best driver ive ever seen look at his accuracy and precision in the blinding sweeping corners .schumacher could only dream about having reflexes this fast.
"Die Strecke ist typisch amerikanisch für amerikanische Städte" :D
"The track is typical American for American Cities"
Well, the sound is a little bit behind the pictures, but that's some awesome footage. what's missing in F1 today? Just watch this. And drivers of 2008 (just 17 years after) complained about the bumps in Singapore. And listen to that engine!
There are large bumbs today too (ok I admit that this is well above average)...but you just dont see them because the onboard cameras today have an "anti-shake" function, which makes it all seem smooth, nice and easy!!!
I'd say: cut the anti-shake crap, and put the cameras lower in the car...just like this vid!
Then we can se what the driver sees and feel just a litle of the shaking thats going down in the cockpit.
Ayrtons precise driving and the amazing Honda V12 are both true legends.

That's because Senna liked to win races from pole. Senna had 65 poles, but only 41 race victories.
Prost only had 33 poles, but he had 51 wins and 46 fastest laps. And we all know that pole positions don't get you points.
