  • I so want to build my own electric car.

  • 77 comments, the world sucks!! If it was some meaningless stunt from lady gaga for example....... well u get the pic

  • I'm a big fan of these games. I get my tips from videogamestrategyguides (.) net

  • Gav,

Thanks, you have inspired me to more fully document my own EV conversion on YouTube.

I love how it is called a conversion. Almost as if it is a religious experience. Not far off I'd say. Cheers from Kearns, Utah, USA

  • Yeah, You are Famous and Inspiration for EV freaks like me. I will definitely convert one, following all you instructions when I earn. Is it possible to power up the steering wheel in these converted EVs?

  • My dream is to convert American Muscule Car into an Electric, but i think Muscular Cars are generally Back Drive, Is is possible to convert Back Drives into EVs.

  • Ever heard of the Tesla Roadster 08 & 09 search it up it's an amazing car and it's 100% eletric

  • in jamaica the doller is 71 to 1 us doller. to full my tank cost me $5000 ja dollers this is crazy dont you think. but you give me hope.thanks. in jamaica we have bob marley. what do you have?

  • @seanbritish Burt Munro..:-)

  • as i just see you video i am starting to build mine and let me tell you bro you videos are now my bible ...thank so much bro

  • Brilliant. I have a question for you - what happens if you start it in first gear?

  • The wheels spin. Hehehe :)

  • right on Gav! I am going to convert a car myself... I've emailed you about your website a few months ago. Awesome you got the work all the way completed! You are THE MAN!

  • GAV RULES!!!!!!!!

  • Well done Bro, Shouldnt it have sheepskin seat covers though? After all you are in N.Z. and you cant get a road worthy certificate there without them.

  • I´m really happy to see this! Fantastic work mate!

  • Hey Gavin, if you got the time, you should research Windbelts. Since you plan on making a Wind Generator later. windbelts are efficient and cheap.

  • Dude, you are awesome :-)

Stoked that you are not the guy skewed with tree branch too?

    Good work!

  • You are awesome for doing this.

    The gas prices are rigged...

    tinyurl com/2648zt

    It's time to go electric.

  • very nice, to TV! Well done you motor seems to be a powerfull! and fast.

Why you car only draw 150Ampers, mine draws maxium about 350amps. i have elcat minivan (it's finnish converted car by company elcat)

i have also videos, and more info at my blog.

Do you have heater at all? :D

  • Hi There, your videos look very cool! Now about the questions. I can draw just over 500 amps if I need to (though I avoid it!) and yes the heater works very well! :)

I have a video showing how I made the heater if you browse through my videos. Thanks mate!

  • Hi,

    These videos are great,

i'd love to do this to a car

the way you described the feeling of it just makes me want to do it myself

    well done.

    thomas.

  • I've got my first conversion due to be delivered in early March (1979 Datsun ute) and might get a Tiger Truck EV the year after or convert another Datsun ute 1971 521 in 2009, so I'm thinkin EV's out in eastern Oregon USA !!!

  • Hi, Thanks for doing this project, I watched all your videos. I was inspired as I watched you. Could you tell us how far and how fast does the car go? and how much does it cost per mile to run?

    Ciaran.

  • Well done m8!

  • Hello Mate in Hawaii and think is the answer for our small island! Do you have plans or more intinsive video diary? would be interested in details, post videos they're great!

  • WOW!! I just spent the last 3 hours watching all your videos and reading some comments. Absolutely AWESOME. CONGRADULATIONS.

Are you going to make more videos about your EV or the wind generator cause if you are I will subscribe.

The really weird thing is I some how came across your videos while looking for "how to" on scrappping off popcorn ceilings. Weird Huh.

  • Hey thanks mate! Yep, more videos coming as soon as I get my new recharging socket installed. It's still on it's way from Germany but should be here in a few days. Then it's time to take the car 4 hours north to Auckland for certification. :)

  • Congrats! I never get stories like that on AMERICAN news about the Ranger....YA know....you HAVE turned into someone we all love to watch...KEEP IT COMING!

  • Well done Champion (and your mate Rob too) for the time, effort, and dedication in making an enjoyable, educational, practical, and at times hilarious step by step series. All we need now is a Mr. Moneybags who dislikes both big oil and big autos enough to bulk-build practical EV's. It's individuals like you who have the ability to turn dreams into reality.

  • Wow! Missed this vid...that was one hell of an interview! They gave you some *real* airtime, not just a 10 second mention. Nice!

  • Tredia v 2.0 will no doubt feature more batteries with higher capacity thus more range.

I say this with confidence because Li-Ion batteries will soon become extremely affordable so I've no doubt we will be someday seeing another vid from Gav where he proudly announces figures like 350 kilometers per charge instead of 60.

At that point all bets are off because it will longer make sense to buy petrol cars at all.

Carmakers can just sell us the bodies if they want to stay in business!

  • Great job on the car!!!

  • i'm so jealous that's a good idea dear for one of my distant future projects. i'll just love to impress people i know with that.

  • If you need help designing a wind turbine, let me know. I may in fact start a topic on them on the DIY EV forum where you post. I know how to build one from scratch, and have gotten one close to completion.

  • im thankful, because you gave me more air :)

  • Gav you're work is a real inspiration! Thanks a lot

  • impressive, Congratulations Gav

  • Congratulations, Gav. Great job! You really worked hard. You deserve all the recognition. Keep us informed on the car's performance.

  • impressive

  • could someone integrate a bendni type circuit to charge the battery while you drive or would you have to build another electric motor?

  • Regenerative braking, that's it...

It requires a motor that can work as a generator and the proper circuitry in the brake system.

Wheelmotors (in-wheel motors) seem to be the best at doing this but it's a completely different approach and Gav is running around NOW with a working vehicle while the wheelmotor folks aren't quite yet

Also, using a solar array yields as much energy offset as regen I believe.

Gav will be the first to benefit from NANOSOLAR when it becomes available!

  • I enjoyed all your videos and your fantastic build!! Very good job!! Thnx!

  • Haha! Thanks everyone.

I don't know if I really want these videos featured or not. I'd end up a lot of comments and spam with much of it probably being non-constructive criticism.

That probably sounds weird but I'd prefer to entertain people who are actually interested in this topic rather than just anyone. Still, if my vids get featured I'll accept it and find the positive. :)

Probably sounds a bit weird but there you have it!

  • actually, you do make a good point.

Better to keep it to those actually interested, I think I'd do the same

  • I wonder how a video becomes a "featured video" on youtube.

Whilst your video should be a "featured video", instead we get stuff like sock-puppets or weeping Britney fans. :-P

But I think it's awesome that you get your story on Campbell - it will open people's eyes!

  • I have to say, though: I kind of wanted to see the bit about the kid "skewered by a tree branch". :D

  • LOL

The presenter told me I beat his story for watch-ability. And I should think so! :)

  • me too haha!

  • GAV you rock man!!!!! congrats!!!!!

  • Again, congrats are in order. Nice going, Gav!

  • Well done Gav. You've inspired many of us who stuck around watching your videos from the moment you towed the Tredia home. If only i had a garage i'd be building one myself.

  • Wow, well done Gav. Looks like practically everybody Youtube is getting TV coverage.

  • Watching your videos and the progress you've made is very inspiring. Good things can only come from this, Good on you mate!

  • have you been getting 60km out of it?

wow, that's more than I expected.

What is it like changing gear when the car is in motion? (ie the clutchless gear-changes)

Well Done! I really didn't expect this from a first effort!

    thanks for helping inspire us

  • Congrats Gav, I'm so proud (even though ur a stranger!) but I think a lot of people here feel the excitement with you as we've seen the progress along the way and now featured on tv! You got a pretty long story too, this can only be a great thing for people's awareness of evs :) I think people are going to click that if they can have a complete Electric Car under $12k, and save thousands each year compared to a gas car. Anyway again, great work!

  • Hey thanks! I'm still getting used to the whole fame thing. Haven't seen the fortune part of it just yet.

The batteries I was refering to were the Altair-Nano and the "LionEV" Lithium batteries. Really impressive but really expensive!

  • Altairnano batteries... *begins to daydream* Thanks for sharing your EV experience with us, I have the best of wishes for you to reach the "fortune" part of your fame. I realised that in your last video you said that building the EV was the best thing you did all year... and your marriage? ;) One day I'll post videos of my 1968 Volvo 122s conversion, thanks for the inspiration --Patrick from Québec, Canada

  • Hahaha, make that the best thing all year, excluding my marriage! I knew I'd get caught out with that remark!

  • hehe in vino veritas and you were drunk with exhilaration at the time :)

    congrats

    great promo work too

maybe down the road you want to look into lithium batteries. it's my impression that something like thundersky LiFePO4 batteries are cheap enough that they are cheaper in the long run because they last longer.

btw, how does it work without the clutch? is it possible to shift gears while driving?

  • Gav you know those Li-Ions will one day be cheap. Don't forget that the first DVD burners were $5,000.00 US and now they almost give them away when you buy a spindle of blanks.

Soon we'll all be picking up standardized Li-Ion packs every three years the way folks exchange propane for BBQ grills. You're a pioneer, mate.

  • Fantastic stuff, good on ya Gav.

Ps what was the quote for the (300km) long life batteries and were thay lithium iorn?

  • Gav, seeing as your the voice & leader of the electric car conversions group, cos you end up being on tv and all, why dont you make a website/forum for all the electric car modifiers in NZ.

  • Hehehe, there is talk about the NZ EV club bursting into life again with all these EV's on the way so you never know... :)

  • well done gav iv been watching since the first video. great work!!!

  • Gav, I am in the process of installing a wind generator. I can definately tell you that you will really have the "GREEN GRIN" when you get one of these or solar panels, see the power meter on the house run in reverse and the car run for $0.00!!!

    It is that fantastic!

  • Superb job! Way to go Gavin! Congratulations on sticking with the project to completion.

  • wow! awesome! i only wish it could be done for less money...

  • Thanks mate!

Don't let my EV's high cost put you off - you could do it for half of that if high speed isn't required! :)

  • yeah, i have seen that... but i have a lead foot and need to go fast, especially when running late for work! lol

  • Congratulations from Australia. I hope you have inspired many more people to take the plunge.

  • congratulation and million thanks for sharing your build process on youtube !!

  • was glad to see this on the telly. good stuff

  • Very nice job, Gav. I have an electric car in the US which I use much as you do -- around town, shopping, to the gym etc. And, yes, I still have the EV Grin widely reported in the medical literature . . .

  • Hey thanks everyone! The car's running but not complete just yet so there are still a few vids to come! Yes, those are new number plates on the car but it's still not 100% legal just yet. :)

  • Awesome! I can't wait to see you build the Wind Generator or Solar.

Wow, 6 more people in NZ are starting to convert.

  • Nice One!!!

  • Well done Gav.

  • How long does it take to fully charge the vehicle?

  • Great!

    Electric cars now!

  • truly awesome! petrol price here in Scotland is now £1 per litre, (NZD $2.69 USD $2.07) I need to get use of a small garage then i will start to convert my Diahatsu Charde, thanks for the motovation Gav. cheers from Bonnie Scotland

  • That was some great news coverage. As far as the

rear weight you should look into getting some heavier springs or a set of air shocks. For safety sake have a auto mechanic look it over.

  • congrats GAV!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • great vid... get the word out!

  • Cool, can't wait to see you build a wind generator!

  • I followed the whole series and this media coverage is just amazing! Truly aspirational!

I hope you can keep us updated with the daily use of the car and things to come!

Greetings from Holland (where gas is 1,50 Euro per litre)

  • cool!

but does this mean the videos will stop?

  • Thats awsome Gav your a hero for the cause. I hope millions more see it's that easy.

  • Hey, Gav...

That looks like a different vehicle registration index plate. Does this mean that your EV is registered and road-legal now ?

  • Congratulations, Gav !!!!!!!
