Is there a tone ring in there? Sounds amazing. I'm lookin at a Reiter A scale with an electric tine ring. Not sure if I want to go A scale or not. It will be my only nice banjo.
I like your version of this and am in the process of learning it. I must have listened to ten or more other versions. Most are very good, but yours had a great clean bounce that I prefer. The banjo is perfect as well. Good job.
I played bluegrass banjo in a band for many years. However, I learned clawhammer somewhere along the way. That's all I play now on old SS Stewarts, HC Dobsons, Wm E Boucher Jr. (original and repo), etc. Your style is so clean and even. You get so much out of an instrument. I plan to learn this song now that you described the tuning. Your guitar and fiddle are also outstanding.
I have always loved Banjo. My grandfather played, and my grandmother played the fiddle. Boy oh boy could they jam. I play (by ear) guitar, piano, and drums. But never got the knack with a banjo. Anyway, great playing....
Learning to play clawhammer banjo can change your life - it did mine. There is a rich tradition of wonderful old tunes and a large community of old time musicians with whom to share them. Enjoy the journey!
Came across this clip the other day; it's a great rendition. It's pretty hard to get to hear a lot of banjo music in Australia and Old Time Mountain Music is very rare. We had some great old time musicians get out here last summer for the Brunswick Music Festival, went down a treat. Thanks again I'm doing my best to pick out the melody; that pause button sure is getting a work over.
I'm still just a beginner at clawhammer, but your videos are quickly becoming not only the source for new songs for me to try but the musical standard to which i'm aspiring. Real clean and easy, soulful but precise. I think I also share your taste for modal and minor tunes. Thanks for the great videos!
Some people mistakenly call it 'Fall of Richmond', thinking that the song refers to the events of the American Civil War. In point of fact, it refers to the falls of the James River.
I echo the comment below. Frosty's work is impeccable, and these banjo tunes are simply intoxicating...I can sit for hours and be simply mezmorized. Thank you for sharing your gift with all of us!
You have to be one of the best old timer clawhammer players here on youtube. I really enjoy your choice of songs you play as well. I think Old Roscoe would be proud of you.
Really Nice! I knew Dwight "D-White" years ago when he was learning to play. He played with John and Dave Morris a lot after I left the state of West Virginia. Then, he went on to do his own thing. My God, those were the days!
Fantastic tune! And such fine rythm and approach with the banjo. I love it! Is it sawmill tuning? (gDGCD)? I really must (try to)learn your version of this tune!
I learned this from you, you can watch my version on my channel. thanks!! my new favorite banjo tune.

Thanks for keeping this music alive, cut CDs and teach as many children as you can!
