As a young american just out of college in 1972 I bummed around Europe and ran into a German guy I think he was, who raved about Nazare, where despite being under the dictator Salazar at the time, one could live on the beach as a hippie-type very cheaply and comfortably. It looks quite gentrified in the intervening 40 years, which isn't surprising. I never went there but it was described as a sleepy fishing village.
I was in Nazare in July 2007...lovely town, gorgeous beach...incredible cliffs...also went out at night to hear music being played 'live'...beautiful place...
