  • Steuart Smith was wonderful with Roseanne Cash and I had the privilege of seeing him with The Eagles at Twickenham a few years ago. If anyone can take the place of Don Felder, he can - a great talent, finally getting some of the recognition that he deserves.

  • sometimes ya just gotta leave the steel guitar out of it

  • I saw him with the eagles in Bangkok a few years ago and didn't know who he was. But he sure played the heck out of that guitar. Thanks for posting this.

  • @Hoppo75

Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Don Felder, Jerry Garcia, Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter, 'The Reverend' Billy Gibbons, Duane 'Skydog' Allman, Dickey Betts, and Alex Lifeson.

  • @bebopPete

Your list is full of great Pioneers rather than great players for me mate (all good players though). Smith is an exceptionally rare talent who is easily every bit as good, and in most cases a whole lot better. If you met your list and asked them about Steuart Smith they'd all tell you the same. Being a great Pioneer doesn't make you a great guitarist I'm afraid (Hendrix case in point).

You're more than entitled to your opinion, maybe Steuart isn't mainstream enough for some folks.

  • @bebopPete .....you left out Gary Rossington and Kenny Vaughan. I wouldn't put any one of those guys, including Steuart Smith above any of the others. They are all great pickers.

  • Saw the Eagles live a few years back. Great concert but after a few songs my eyes were constantly drawn the "new" guy Steuart. What a serious talent! Poor Joe Walsh could only pretend to keep up. Go Steuart!

  • Steuart Smith is simply one of the best. I saw him with Roseanne Cash and his playing was jaw dropping. His right hand work is incredible. People talk of great guitarists. They should see and hear SS before making a comment.

  • Unbelievable.

    Great guitar work and vibe.

    Rodney Crowell at his best!

  • It's a shame that the Eagles and Don Felder couldn't mend their diff's - and Steuart had nothing to do with his losing his position. That said, Steuart has the Eagles job as long as he wants it, according to Henley. Being an old friend and longtime fan of Steuart's since his days in "Cryin' Out Loud", "Root Boy Slim" and other DC acts of the late 70's and early 80's, I'm thrilled to see him getting the much overdue attention he's deserved for so many years. Finest guitar player I've seen!

  • Steuart Smith is an astonishing musician. Check out Wynonna Judd's first two studio albums, he is all over them. He also did a ton of tracks on Vince Gill's records, adding his textures to support Vince's own guitar work. When Vince Gill is calling you to play guitar on his records, you must be pretty brilliant.

  • Much better than don felder?! i don't think anyone can make that comment! I have seen both live - they are both packed with raw talent - and both totally different musicians! As far as i'm concerned Don Felder made many of the eagles songs what they were! so sweeping statements like '......better than felder.........' are complete rubbish

  • i agree you have to give him alot of credit....w/o we would have no "Hotel California" but if you look at talent on the guitar Smith destroys him.....even with the eagles he is adding riffs that just make the song that mch better....

  • I'm sorry but Don Felder put that new intro together for the acoustic version of hotel california the night before the Hell Freezes Over performance......that is raw talent......it's not possible to differentiate between musicains like this as they are both so different. they are both amazing guitarists - but to try and tell me one is way better than the other....that's bull.

  • saw steuart many years ago in the d.c. area playing in a band called "switchblade. he was/is fantastic.

i hope the eagles are paying well!

  • Awesome Steuart. Even better with the Eagles this guy adds texture to every band he plays with much better than Don Felder

  • Steuart is my relative!!

  • --Steuart Smith - probably the world's greatest living electric guitarist. -- You won't get any argument out of me with that comment. Awesome, kickass song too!!!

  • Good Gawd Almighty! That guitar solo sends chills up my spine, He is awesome!

  • God Stewart is amazing..

  • love the drummers haircut

  • If you ever saw SS play live outside the limited boundrys the Eagle's schtick puts on him, you'd be very slow to doubt or diss him. That is if you know jack about virtuoso players.

  • where did this video come from?

I'd really like to have it on dvd or cd!!!!!

    Thanks!!!

  • Yeah, Steuart Smith on the WHITE STRATOCASTER, that's it, nothing else!!!

  • Sorry, I've changed my mind - Richard Thompson is "probably the world's greatest living electric guitarist" :o)

  • yeah i'm inclined to agree after veiwing that bear movie by herzog

  • @mooseontheloose : Richard Thompson is one of my favorite guitar players AND one of my favorite songwriter. This steuart Smith iss a killer definitely. Didn't know him until i saw his name on the Eagles wikipedia page.

  • "probably the world's greatest living electric guitarist". <--- DAMN that's some over-the-top hype there.

He's got perfect-pitch and a remarkable knowledge of the Bakersfield style of phrasing. But in no way is this guy anywhere in the Top-100 of all living guitarists in terms of originality or melodic expression. He's an talented imitator.

  • Have you ever seen Steuart play live? I hope you're not basing your 'talented imitator' slight on single youtube. I first saw him back in the 70s in DC bar bands. He can do anything. I've heard him channel everyone from Scotty Moore, George Harrison, Hendrix, Dick Dale. Get away from youtube and see live music. Tonight, in some venue somewhere, the world's best guitar player is playing - eyes closed tight, Fender Dual Showman turned to 10, and all for a half-filled house of 200 lucky people.

  • That's a GREAT shout there!!! Well said. Loads of great musicians playing their heart out every night. I had never heard of SS until I went to see the Elvis 'live on screen' show a few years back in Paris. To my UTTER DISMAY, James Burton wasn't there 'cos he was in the US being inducted into the RR hall of fame. SS had been drafted in to stand replace JB with Elvis' band, no doubt with JB's blessing... That says as much as I need to know!!! He was a REVELATION!!!

  • @bebopPete

Who would you put into that exclusive list above him then?

  • Felder got bored shitless playing the stuff he helped put together 30-40 years ago, and it was evident to the rest of the band and he wanted a bigger cheque to buy more cars and STUFF so the band had to find a guitar player SO AFTER SEEING AND HEARING SMITH BUSKING AT THE TRAIN STATION FOR A CUP OF SOUP AND SOME MEHICAN BEANS they told him to go and practice and learn all those PISS EASY guitar parts and play in arguably the best band ever. EASY.

  • you guys get out of the sandpit

Felder is great Smith is great

don't be so precious about the friggen Eagles I saw the Melbourne DVD and Smith was great. Felder would have been great too. Does anyone know why he doesn't

    play with eagles?

  • he's dead

  • ahem i didn't know that, sad loss of a great

    guitarist

  • Don isn't dead!! He got fired from the Eagles 4 years before the Farewell Tour was filmed! He's still alive and kicking.

  • I never understood why someone would dispute one musicians ability over anothers especially when they are at the level of Smith's or Felder's. They are obviously diffrent, but both are great at what they do.

  • If Steuart Smith was better than Don then The Eagles would of replaced him long time ago, because Steuart played with Don Henley on his solo career, The Eagles went back and Don was still there, come on people open your eyes Steuart Sucks, he's not even an Eagle!!! why cuz he no where near to playing like Don!!

  • Dude stop sucking Don Felder's cock.. Steuart Smith doesn't suck, it's a personal opinion; and the fact the Don Felder plays more instruments doesn't make him a better guitarist.. you don't even know if Steuart Smith plays any other instruments either. You're not always right buddy, life's like that.

  • What makes you think you are right??? Don Rock's, like I said before they would of replaced him long time ago with Smith!!! Get over Smith dude!!! And playing more instruments makes Felder better because he has more knowledge on music instruments, com'on he came up with hotel californias harmonies, bass line, chords, his solo. that is one of the best rock songs ever recorded in history!!! Period End of Story!!!

  • Lol alright. Steuart's still better :D

  • If that makes you get wet, ok Smith is better!!!

  • Steuart was the bomb back when Danny and Roy were still kickn.Weekends at the Deli switchblade style, being played like a axe himself! in the arms of Rootboy, ah thanks for all the great times.you too Ratso and Johnny.

  • Steuart Smith on that guitar has gotta be the eight wonder of the world!

  • I been wondering why Steuart demeans himself that way anyway, must be just the cash? He can play that stuff in his sleep with one finger on each hand.

  • I first saw him on the Eagles farewell tour DVD and he blew me away. This old stuff is great. Steuart does have some chops.

  • All that Eagles Fans that cry for Don Felder and bully Steuart Smith should listen closely here and be quiet.

  • Yeah, personally i think Steuart Smith is better than Felder

  • Never!!!

  • Felder plays way better, he also plays more instruments than this shitty guitarist!!

  • my dad taped this concert years ago - and as far as i know, it's never been released on dvd / vhs - nothing. my dad still has the tape, and as far as i know, it's gold-dust. awesome songs were played, including Rosanne Cash's stuff. Steuart Smith is simply unbelievable - his style, technique, etc are flawless and so melodic!

  • Steuart, not Stuart

  • Corrected. Thank you

  • No prob. Awesome video of a genius guitarist. I have some friends who have been in bands with him and they just shake their heads. Please post more if you have any. His stuff on Shawn Colvin's tours was amazing...any video?
