could u imagine marrying a man twice ur age then have him be disapointed becuase u had a girl, have his daughter that's not ur own come and live with u but then she falls in love with grey :) but she got pregos and had the baby taken away then finale having a son, your free to leave but u cant see ur kids on top of that ur husband having an affair with ur best friend. That's some messed up shit !!!
Its sad she married young & had a different idea of what marriage would be like & that jerk was nothing but a jerk to her & I know if she knew in the beginning that she really loved charles grey before getting married she wouldnt of married that meany head. Great thing us ladies have a divorce option now lol some things arent as they seem to be....
@BeautifulDarknessC There was never a time in history when divorce didn't exist, but in the 18th century men did have more power in deciding a divorce (unless there was public evidence that a husband was abusive, particularly if it was with a more notable woman, in which case the emperor, king, etc could be called to step in on the woman's behalf: unfortunately, taking a mistress didn't quite count as abuse if little was said of it). But yeah, she had a pretty awful life.
@cazonetta Actually, divorce didn't exist until the Tudor dynasty. From then on, divorce did exist, but it was very much scorned, especially on the woman's part because God forbid a woman value her happiness.
Also, abuse, back then, was hardly ever addressed. Since women were not considered people at that time, violence against women was no different to disciplining a dog. If a woman spoke out against it, she was either laughed at, told to accept it or thrown into the asylum.
Everybody goes on and on about how unfair her life was. It was the duty of the wife to be faithful and devoted to her husband no matter how awful he was. I agree that the husband was a real dick. I think it's pretty awful how women have been treated for bearing girls instead of boys-as if it's their fault.
But how about how unfair the life of a commoner was? Without her noble birth, she could have been dirt poor instead.
@mmr11027 It wasn't her duty to be a slave because that's exactly what she was. She was forced into the marriage and forced to bear only sons and if she had daughters, they'd be hated and thrown to the street. She didn't have to be faithful to him because he was a slaver, nothing more. She could've gone free. It would be better if she were with Grey because she'd be free and happy. So what if she wasn't noble?
@mmr11027 There are nuances to everything. Commoners had specific advantages the rich didn't have, and vice versa. An 18th century commoner, BTW, is not "dirt poor." Struggling, yes, but not beggars on the street.
A noble woman, if married to an utter ass of a jerk, is at a FAR higher risk for many things (i.e. domestic abuse, STDs). Commoners to most middle-class families didn't arrange marriages, and many were careful about engaging in any sexual activity (except prostitutes, etc).
it's sooo sad. And the movie made me cry, at the end when it's telling what happened like when it shows them running around the yard and stuff and it's talking about how she lived with bess and the asshole until she died, and bess took over basically, and she could never be with grey and when it was talking about her daughter and stuff. soo sooo sad :'[ And I was like omg this actually happened to someone too- what a frustrating, hopeless, miserable life
it makes me want to cry because its sooo sad but their love was beautiful too bad they didnt get to stay together, She got everything taken away from her and its all true thats whats worst. thank you for making this video its perfect.
i watched this fim for the first time on a plane a few days ago and i thought this song went really well with the film, glad someone else did too! this is such an awesome film and so sad!!! excellent video well done :)
It's sad how dutie ruins so much.
But I'm glad she chose her children over him. If she had chosen him over her children I would have hated her forever.

Her daughers would be hated or thrown out on the street - sorry, your exaggerating! Its is awful and unfair but he's not a slaver - just a bastard.

So sad, I can't believe how unfair her life was... it's so sad that everything that happened in this movie happened to a real person. :(
