@azam1346 no not at all Man is actually the formal way to say it its not pronounced like MAN in english but M-ah-n it sounds NICER :) but in EVERYDAY dari we usually would say Azam Astum or Namem Azam ast or even Ma Azam astum. Usually when you say Ast(um) the ending already IMPLIES your talking about urself so saying Ma / man is not necessary. I like how u use Man and Astam if this is how youve learned it keep using it :) like I said it sounds much nicer.
@azam1346 (part 2) : If your talking to people who also speak Conversational Dari and you don't hear MAN or ASTAM etc then you can use MA or Astum. I guess it depends on who your speaking to. Younger people might think your POSH but it isnt a BAD Thing :). Goodluck. Khuda hafez.
You know what would be cool? Record a Teka card game played by the elders at an Afghan party and then break down the translation. I guess you could do the same for the woman's side but you'd have to bleep out the names of the innocent.
@sw33t65 Shoma - is the word used for YOU but when you wanna be polite or formal and the ending you use when conjugating is -ayn so... Shuma chee maykunayn? Shuma koojah mayrayn? so just add -ayn instead of -ee because -ee is more for people who are e your friends so kinda INFORMAL Kooja mayree ? Chee maykunee? vs Shoma kooja mayrayn? Shoma chee maykunayn?
@CUcumberProject Listen - goshko See - Saiyl ko Listen I want to tell you somethin - Goshko maykhayum cheez bugoyumet or Look, we can't do it - Saiyl ko namaytanaym bukunaym.

lol haha thats really cooL u speak paShto :/ lol I'll eventually learn 2 thank u for commenting :) :) and no need to apologize :) lol I'll remove the comment I read u wrong so its cooL :)
@xgotfiveonitx in hyderabadi urdu, from hyderabad india we also say nuko for 'dont'. this is not found anywhere else in any dialect of urdu and something pakistanis like to mock us about. now i can tell them it comes from dari, i never knew this!!
hi, i'm trying to learn some basic dari, and these lessons are very helpful. so, thank you! but there's one thing that's confusing me: you say YES is AWW, but i also found it translated as SAIZ and BALE. could you please explain it it? are they all correct? when do you use which? is there a difference in their meaning?
:) Salam. The word BALE (or Balay) is a polite way of saying Yes. In conversational dari the word we also use is AAN (but it sounds like aww) you can ALWAYS use balay(BALE) if you like :) it sounds nicer an is more polite for all ages. Aww/Aan is more conversational everyday dari. :)
i understand; it's like a confirmation. thanks! i apologize if i'm being a nuisance and for bothering you with silly questions, but there aren't many sources for dari, and all my initial learning was based on second-hand obtained phrases and some vocabulary, much of that distorted and contradictory, and i want to make some sense of it all. your course has been very helpful in this regard, and i'm beginning to get a broader picture of the language. and the more i learn, the more i like it!
Dari and Pashto are the top 2 languages in Afghanistan they both are spoken commonly BUT I think Dari may be the one that more people speak ... if I'm wrong Pashtoons of mine leme know lol but last I checked most ppl who speak Pashto speak dari also but its usually not the other way around.
hi, i found the lessons very useful as I try to learn dari. So I tried to use what you teach in this lesson, and people here in kabul say like : no no you don't use that word when i say bitay
also when i say kaar, for answering the question, they say usually u don't use kaar but daftar (spelling) for office.....
hm.. lol Bitay = give it if you wana be poliTe you say Barem bitayn. Kaar = work and Daftar = office so it depends on the job but Kaar is the word for Work and BITAY means give it so idk why theyd say dont use that lol ie. if ur sayin Can you give me the phone - Barem telefoona maytayn? (polite/formal) but informal = Barem telefoona bitay or bitay telefoona barem.
I used bitay first time to kitchen personal here in my office, and he said it is not a good word, without explaining why as he can not speak much in english, so I tried with in the office when I had lunch break and everybody was laughing and I ask why, they said when you don't use object you use when you ask for s*x.......and ask again to another person and he said that was correct, do not use word just "bitay" because it means something else, but you can use bitay telefoona......
welll its not ur fault they have dirty minds bc bitay is fine as long as u say the object like ..Ketabah barem Bitay its like sayin Give me in English so if sum1s really pervy minded then idk. if THEY wana think of GIvEme as gimme sex then its not ur fault at all. u hav2include wat ur askin4I guess if ur talkin to sum1pervyMinded,I'll make sure2add a note lol but GRAMATICALLY its Perfectly fine lol Sorry uWent thru that but its not U its the ppl ur talkin2That rSick. Tellem I said Besharmayn.
thank you. It was just a bit strange when you are pretty sure you remember correctly and saying correctly but still wrong they say it was wrong....thx a lot with the lesson

@johny123t also, what about "bale" for yes?
johny123t 1 year ago
@johny123t :) "bale" (pronounced b-ah-lay) is a polite way of saying yes :) so use it instead of aah or aan.
