I think I've seen this exact Olds still running. I see 1 or 2 of them every so often when I'm on the pike heading to/from work (Boston -> Framingham). I also have a '98 88. About to hit 140k miles. I think I'm the 3rd owner and it wasn't well taken care of. Everything under the hood is rusted, already lost the AC and had to replace all of the breaks and wheel bearings. It's an extremely roomy car and it's like driving a really comfortable couch. It also has no complaints flooring it.
nice miles. but honestly. its highly unlikely you will put in the effort for a gm product of the 80's or 90's to maintain it all the way to 300000 miles. not worth it. good vid though.
@youngb1ood you dont have to put any effort with the 3.8l, it will go to 300,000 miles no problem- I have seen several examples, there is a buick on youtube i just watched today
my uncle has a 1995 ninety Eight model olds and its pushing 300K miles right now and it still runs great it had 240K on it when he got it and it is probaly somewhere around the range 260 - 280 thous i have not checked recently
what is the difference between the Regency and the Delta? my grandma has the 1997 Regency 88, and hers has the old Oldsmobile symbol on the steering wheel.
@chevyman2013 the Delta name hadn't been used since 1991. The 1992 model was simply the Eighty-Eight with an optional Royale trim package. There was a rare model in 1997-98 simply called the Regency, that was sort of a replacement in the line up of the discontinued 98, but was based on the 88 with the older 94-96 88 headlights. It was very unusual for a "new" model to use parts from an older model but thats what Olds did and it came fully loaded with few options and they called it Regency.
Update, a church missionary took the 95 Delta yesterday. I no longer have to see the car sit which is how GM produced them. To sit! They started the engine and it ran for a minute. I drove by the church later in the evening and they were working on it with hood and truck open. I hope they can get it running and find a home with someone who needs a car. If they cannot get the GM thing running they are going to give parts to people who need them for their GM automobiles!
I've got a 1998 Olds 88 with 120000 miles on it. I replaced the plastic intake plenum about four years ago. The replacement was supposed to be a better one than the factory. It's been a great car. Check out my video. There's not a cleaner one in Michigan that gets driven every day.
There's no way this car made it 200k miles on the original motor. Here's why. The 3800 II motor has a plastic intake. They fail, causing oil and coolant to mix. I've know just 2 people with different GMs with the 3800 II motor and BOTH had total engine failure prematurely. A '97 Park Ave failed at just 40k and a '98 Olds Intrigue failed at 110k. Very common problem that all 3800 II engines experience. Was a great motor before the plastic intake decision.
actually your right they do fail cause we had one of these oldsmobiles transmission went out at 50,000 miles engine died at 150,000 actually seized the motor their good cars but some are lemons maybe this guy has had better luck with his car
Most people don't know that and it's too late once it fails. The only way to get the god metal one is a junk yard. Not many people will go through that trouble.
It is easier said than done. We babied that 95 delta from day one. if they are not any good why buy any american car. This just happened real sudden with absolutely no warning. I have a 95 delta that looks brand new sitting like they were made to do. Luckily a church wants the car thinking it can be fixed for a member that has no car. The car looks brand new. Such a waste. I was told to drain the oil and antifreeze and refill and it should be ok. I doub't that...
Please send me to a head doctor. My 1995 Delta engine went bad, antifreeze in engine. I purchased an Olds Intrigue and it has the exact same engine as the Delta. I didn't even notice until I parked it beside the Delta and had the hoods open. I know the same thing will happen to this car. I am dumber than dumb and dumber.
Ooh. I hear ya. The Intrigue was offered with either the same 3.8L as the Delta you had, or an optional 3.5L V6. If it makes you feel any better, the 3.5L isn't a very good motor either. I seriously recommend selling or trading in the Intrigue before that engine goes bad too. It will do the same thing that you Delta did. It's that damn plastic intake manifold on top of the engine.
Now the intrigue is loosing antifreeze. it is not in the oil however. i have to add antifreeze every couple days for short distant driving. Screw GM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Had to junk my 95 delta and will no doubt have to junk the intrigue.
Check the collant overflow tank. If there is chunks of black bits floating in it, it means your manifold has gone back and coolant and oil are mixing. I hope not!
Why junk it? You can fix it if you act before it gets too bad.
GM did develop some improved parts and gaskets that might help. You should ask for them specifically if you do attempt a repair. Parts houses might still have new old stock for the old, inferior parts.
For all of these plastic-intake equipped 3800s and similar engines that have failed, I've seen plenty that haven't. It's strange--and there has to be a reason.
My Olds Delta has bad engine now! The intake was a weakness in the engines for GM. Antifreeze got in the motor and is shot to hell. I found out that this is a huge problem for GM and they ignored the complaints.
Yes. The car will have to be junked. Looks good but the motor is shot. I discovered that GM was aware the problem and ignored it. The Chevy Malibu has a horrible record of this occuring. Mechanic informed me that this was a big problem with these type of cars.
I will never buy any american made car again. They are really not american made anyway. I hear the Chrysler 300 is made in China. I will forget all that and buy a Honda, Toyota or Mazda and get on down the road! I hear some Honda's still run with over 300000 miles!! We have a huge gigantic brand new Honda plant about 20 minutes from my home!
Don't be so quick to dismiss all American vehicles. I've found where a car is built to be irrelevent. My old Plymouth Acclaim was an exellent car for many years and was built in Mexico. My current Kia is built in Korea and thus far has been great as well. I've heard/read plenty of complaints about Hondas and Toyotas. So don't automatically dismiss all American cars as bad and all Japanese as good. It's honestly not that easy to figure out. Use the web to find what cars are good and bad.
It's a shame really. The GM 3.8L V6 is actually a very good motor. A mechanic friend of mine saw one with 600k miles. I told him he was lying, but he swears by it. The plastic intake turned what was previously an excellent motor into a motor that literally self-destructs.
GM is still using the 3800, as in the Buick Lacrosse. Guess what? GM did more revising to it and they created a NEW major design problem. Now they burn oil in mass quantity. Was reading about it online. People with brand new ones are complaining of going through a quarts of oil between changes and when they told GM, GM said "it's normal". LOL
@palebeachbum They call it "proper lubrication" The 4.6 Northstar V8's in Cadillacs do the same thing. What I don't get is what is the oil properly lubricating when it is just going through the engine like any other car? haha what they won't come up with nowadays XD
@palebeachbum - thats true, the gen 1 3800 (made up through 1994) was one of the best GM engines made... 1995 gen II 3800 started having issues and even recalls for fires on some models. :(
I think this 98 Olds 88 has the gen II 3800 and I think this was still the good one... certain models had issues, but I dont think the Olds 88 had the issue.
I sadly admit that I found this video interesting. 200k is a milestone. I also sadly admit that taking video while you drive is something I do often. Thanks for your video!

Yes they did. Many engines these days use a plastic manifold. They are ok, as long as it's a good design. Some just happen to be junky.

1993. Since your's doesn't have the plastic intake, it should last a long time. Good motor.

one way of telling if its a plastic intake is the vin#. if the 8th digit of vin# is a K it is gauranteed plastic.
checkvalve321 2 years ago
Or you can just pop the hood and look. The intake is on top of the motor. If it's plastic, it's black. If it's metal it's white.

I have a 98' Delta 88 with original motor going on 205,000. So yes, there is a way.

If the body on the car in question held up, I have no doubt in my mind that the GM 3800 V6 would make it to 600,000 miles.
I know of a late-80s Buick that has over 350,000 miles on it now. It was rustproofed when new and still looks very good.
I've got an '89 Electra that was given to me and is getting closer to 300,000 every day. The body will let it down before the powertrain ever does!
