@snaigel he was writing a Christian story or more appropriately for his definition a "christian-esque story" Tolkien did not want Harry Potter-like magic everywhere because that is magic that manipulates creation. Magic in LOTR is more like spiritual power of angels(which is in fact what Gandalf is, he is a Maiar which is Tolkien's world's equivalent to angels) any good magic is always done in a way that is in harmony with nature and is only leveled at evil.

@snaigel er, are you sure you watched the same trilogy before as i did? he does more than 1 spell in all 3 movies). granted, its not flashy magic as most know it from other fantasy genre stories, but still magic regardless. also, from what little i understand lore wise, he and the other wizards like him try to use as little magic as poss., not wanting to interfere too much with the 'regular' mortal world. some type of agreement? makes sense, or sarumon woulda blown up the fort instead

Each book in the LOTR trilogy is at least that length, and the Silmarillion is nearly 400 with the appendices, and has far more complexity. The hobbit really doesnt have enough depth to warrant a split.

@CommunistHamster SW books especially Heir to the Empire are considered great science fiction books and I would say one of the greatest. SW has a following at least as large as HP (and may I say that most HP fans are kids while most SW fans are adults). Have you even read any SW book, especially Heir to the Empire? And what serious research papers have been written about harry potter, besides that makes it no more legitimate as an actual story as opposed to what it really is, a childrens book.
