I was just an amateur drummer growing up through school, and this is just fantastic. I really enjoyed this performance. I can't find any future takes on YouTube though. Great job bro!
@1998tuna That is a HUGE compliment! I am humbled, thank you. All the more so because you are a bass player and not a drummer :-)
I'm not sure about the views - I guess Message is always gonna be more popular and Walking On The Moon has taken me by surprise - though when I watch it back now I wonder how the hell I did it and can see why everyone freaks out about it :-)
Copeland was and is unique - I wholly agree with you.
The sticks are Flix Sticks. made in Scotland, available from all good drums shops / ebay.
Cymbals - 13" istanbul mehmet radiant hats, 8" and 10" A custom splashes, 15" avedis paper thin crash (1987), 16" A custom crash, 15" mini china and 22" impulse ride (1987).
More details on my jouxplan website - link on my channel :-)
This track and "driven to tears", were the tracks that influenced me to take up the drums as a kid. My big brother was a huge Police fan and played their music constantly at home. I learned to play this on the backs of chairs, using my mother's wooden spoons! At least until I could afford a drum kit! Great effort man, not an easy one to play.
When you started, you were just OK, but as soon as you put in emotions, you were mesmerizing. Put some emotions on your face like Santana did in his early days, and you will be awesome.
@farooqihassan Ha! Ha! Well, if you watch any of my videos on here, you will see that I am better at face pulling then I am at drumming :-)
I always play with passion, and cannot stand to watch musicians that are expressionless, even if they are technically stunning. Emotion and passion is what makes for great music and a more involved viewing experience for an audience, in my humble opinion.
Shadows In Rain? Are we talking about the version on Sting's first solo album? If so, I consider it to be one of the most perfect pieces of drumming ever. Hakim at his best. Very, very difficult groove, and he nailed it. Damned if I can do it :-)
This groove is actually dotted 8th notes... It's really on the edge of a swing, but not full on. I think you're doing a little too much 16th notes with 2 hands. I know this is a really difficult track to pull off. But I remember using a reel to reel machine to slow the track down and hear the rolls and hi-hats a little better. I would recommend you completely tighten your snare drum to the max, as it's ringing too much. "Collecting Stewart Copeland" is me on the drums. Check for it on youtube.
@shytoons As I have said to others, my ability fails me as far as the dotted 8ths goes. It is all I can do to play what you see in this video. Copeland is a master, and any drummer who can play 8s that only just swing is very special - I certainly cannot do it!
You are my favorite person on youtube. I come watch your videos when I need to be reminded that there is beauty and joy and passion in the universe. Seriously.
@jouxplan It's true. :) Are you on facebook? Come find me. Type in "pershall" and I'm the girl whose name starts with S. (As you may well have guessed.)
Great energy and timing! I'm learning this track myself, and it's not easy. One thing I picked up on in your version...you're playing it straight, like Ska. The studio groove has a 'swung' shuffle feel, or rather half way between straight and shuffle, like Reggae. It's really hard to nail, but if you listen to the hi-hats they're not straight 8ths, more like broken triplets, but a bit more flattened out. Another song where Copeland plays that in between straight-swung hihat is Tea in the Sahara.
Yes, someone else has mentioned this, and you are both quite right. Just shows how incredible Copeland was / is. Frankly, I don't think I am good enough to play the slightly swung hi hat on this one! I am working on Tea In Sahara at moment, and will do my best to capture it on that one!
You'll do it I'm sure. You've plenty of feel and technique. Practicing Tea in the Sahara is a great way to get closer to that feel...because it's slower, you'll feel alot more that half way stage between half time shuffle and straight 16ths, on the hihat hand. I tend to over-swing 'Tea'...my temptation is to play it more like Walking on the Moon :)
Nice work....the tune has so much emotion tied to it, which (for me) makes it easy to want to rush...but you really held on, particularly with the hi hat to tom sixteenth second note passages. bravo
@recyclingismylife That is very high praise - thank you :-) For what it is worth, doing this almost killed me - I am right at the very limit of my ability here, and struggling! Copeland did something astonishing when he created this masterpiece.
@coleman925 Hey, thank you! Yeah, this one is horribly difficult. Then again, all his stuff is horribly difficult! Still, One World is special - Copeland showing off as only Copeland can :-)
very good copying but the thing is that i think copeland even said that he feels bad for all the people trying to copy his recording completely. when he plays he just kinda feels it and what ever comes out becomes known as the drums for it. i mean obviously his beats he plays again live but all the fills and crashes and stuff he doesnt play exactly the same. great job man get some real sticks and itd sound even better
That is exactly why I find trying to play any of his stuff so hard - it is all too clear as you try and master each fill and verse and chorus that he is simply 'making it up as he goes along' in a way that only Copeland can do - perfect, perfect virtuosity. Copying him is extraordinarily tough, especially just memorising it all!
Just came across your Copeland Vids.I take my hat off to you. When he plays, he's going with the groove and working the song. To be able to copy his style as well as you do is vorthy of the highest praise. 'One World ' is all about the drums, the other insruments are just backing. Your playing is excellent.
I find copying any of his stuff, whether it be the obviously difficult One World, or the seemingly simple Roxanne, incredibly tough. Copeland's drumming and energy and sense of time and groove are just phenomonal.
I can commend you for attempting to play this song, but sorry to say it doesn't really sound much like Stewart. You need to completely tighten your drums to get a more Copeland like sound. And regular sticks as opposed to brush sticks would also help.
I agree about the triplets VS 16 notes. You sound far too busy on the ride, more like a heavy metal dance beat. It's not an easy song, I've been drumming for 33 yrs now, and Copeland 's my main style. Check my video of Collecting Stewart Copeland
Many thanks for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it and even the big description! At least someone reads it!
Interesting point about the triplet thing. I will have to have another listen, 'cos I have always thought that they were 8's, whilst rest of band played in triplet feel, apart from the very last few bars. I'm on holiday at present, so cannot do this yet, else I would reply with more detail!
Well, thanks to you for appreciating my opinion =)
If you play triplet hihats, then the tune will sound much better. I'm talking about a rhythms similar to Toto's Rosannas, but with the backbeat in 2 & 4.
Also, I think it is harder to do a perfect cover of a given tune than it might have been to produce the original work (this is not to denigrate the quality of the original work, of course).
Mr. Copeland could just throw stuff in as he felt it, and probably felt no need to "get it right" per se, since he was defining it as he went along. On the other hand, you are trying to reproduce him perfectly by listening and copying and figuring out his moves. I'll bet he doesn't try to do that in concert.
Awesome! This is one of my very favorite Police tunes. What is interesting is that, as a listener, it has a lot of "space" in it. However, watching you play it indicates how much is actually going on in that space.
Yes, that's an interesting point about the space in this song. The drum part for sure is horribly complex!
Your other comment was interesting too - shame you removed it! I can see the comment in my 'account' area, but you seem to have removed it from here :-(
I deleted a comment that had a couple of spelling errors and then re-posted it, with corrections (stupid youtube won't let you edit a comment). It's the one about trying to perfect a cover of someone else's musical part. I see that post here (immediately below).
i have left something like 4 comments on your drumming. i am impressed! are you british? something about brit drummers. they have something that other cultures don't in drum styles. i also notice brititish women have big tits compared to all other cultures. i am canadian and know alot of british nannies. they all have double d breasts!!
I am from England, yes! have a look at my channel page, and if you are really keen, I now have a jouxplan website - link on my channel. Lots more info about my drumming on there....
Interesting what you say about British drummers - never really thought about it to be honest.
As for the tits thing - seems like you have been lucky(!) with your nannies - not all British women are so endowed I assure you!
this is a msaterpiece and you have done a great job!! no offence but your snare sounds shitty compared to the rest of your kit. how come you don't play rim shots like stewart does??i give you credit for playing this. one of the hardest drum songs ever. so many changes and rhtyms!!!
Very good job. I don't blame you for writing out some of those parts, some of copelands parts are very freeform and spuratic. Why are are you using those sticks though?
Freeform indeed! Absolutely agree. I'll have to check what 'spuratic' actually means (!) but I am sure I will agree with that too!
I have not used wooden sticks for 20 years. Long story. Full explanation on the FAQ page of my jouxplan website (see my channel). Flix Sticks are perfect for these YouTube vids, 'cos they are quieter. I do not use drum mics or a mixer, just play along to the cd in a very 'raw' way.
When I was a drummer (!) I used to try to play Stewart's stuff. I think most of his stuff is realtime. I don't think even he could do what you're trying to do. He has enough talent that he could probably have done 5 takes, and all would have been compelling and usable, but never repeatable. There's a really cool video on here where he is interviewed by someone in his home (?) and he details the use of his digital delays.
Yes, I agree that he almost certainly played everything slightly differently every time; but that every take he did would have been awesome-ness-personified.
I think you are probably referring to an interview he had with Jools Holland.
They are Pearl Export 1986, 5 pc. I got 'em when I was a student. Have added two cheap 8 and 10" toms from Ebay, and changed snare for a Chad Smith Signature. Then its lots of zildjians incuding the zil bel purchased just for this vid and then dw4000 double pedals and hi hat.
ANSWER...'cos I got this beautiful Chad Smith one nice and cheap on Ebay!
I have never really been into trying to buy the same stuff as my various idols, and since I am as much a Genesis head as a Police fan, it would have been unfair on Phil Collins and Chester Thompson if I had purchased a Copeland sig snare!!
yeah man those chad smith snares sound amazing, i have one. idk what head your using on it but a emperor X sounds sick on that snare with pure sound snares and the remo bottom head that came with the snare
what a masterpiece. thish is such an amazing song. you did a wonderful job covering it and you should be so proud.
i read your discription and i heard that this was recorded during a jam session also. so it probably was. everyt thing combines so smoothly. its amazing. i cant even put it into words. great job
Voices - yeah, a real difficult cover. You think it is nice and easy, but the groove totally is not there when you try it yourself! Probably bitten off more than I can chew - any way, I will try soon!
I was just an amateur drummer growing up through school, and this is just fantastic. I really enjoyed this performance. I can't find any future takes on YouTube though. Great job bro!

great!! wonderful..... stuart copeland is groove heaven...good work
QUESTION...why dont you use the TAMA stuart Copeland sig snare?
valleysofneptune 3 years ago
Cheers!

Hey, thank you very much! And it is good to hear that someone else heard that this was a Police jam. Frightening stuff!
jouxplan 4 years ago
Thank you!
Voices - yeah, a real difficult cover. You think it is nice and easy, but the groove totally is not there when you try it yourself! Probably bitten off more than I can chew - any way, I will try soon!
