  • I'd say the perfect version is Rubinstein,-> technically speaking. Althought, (in my opinion) this has some charm that undeniably makes it the best.

  • whatever alban189. my two year old has more powerful fingers.

  • Спасибо !!!

  • rubinstein is best on this one..

  • @MrChopiano vous n'aimez pas Chopin,tant pis pour vous

  • @MrChopiano Nice troll sir.

  • 3:50 insane clarity

  • No existeixen pianistes tan bons que estiguin vius. Ja no existeixen Rubinsteins, Richters, Claudios Arraus...

Llàstima que no t'hagi conegut ni hagi pogut escoltar la teva música en directe. Els professors de piano que hi ha a Catalunya no ensenyen pas massa bé. Així segur que no aconseguirem ser com tú Déu nostre.

  • Not up to par. Phrasing needs some work. You should hear my neighbor's kid play this ballade.

  • @schmitty135 *Polonaise

  • No legato with the hands, playing that way is very easy... Sorry...

  • Whhyyyy didn't I start piano 5 years earlier???

  • @MsThisNameIsTaken i ask the same .. but in my case are 15 years..... earlier. =(

  • And Gould for Bach.

  • Argerich Gilels and Horowitz. Then come the rest.

  • @fierydog Then Rafał Blechacz handily outplays all three with this piece. Makes them all look brutal, self-indulgent, sloppy, and lacking the right feel.

  • @mstalcup I wrote that comment a while ago and my tastes have changed slightly. I think if you make a list of 15 top pianists (that we have heard play) that Argerich and Gilels are certainly on the list! Certainly this is not Gilels best interpretation, yet, Gilels was never really known for his Chopin. I have never heard Blechacz but assume Argerich's Chopin is at least up to par with Blechacz?

  • @fierydog Blechacz plays this with grace, variety of touch, and a nice respect of rhythmic details, capturing the character brilliantly. Argerich too has many wonderful qualities in her early performance including confidence, technical strength, agility, and power. I find her performance on the heavy side, harshly percussive playing in the main theme restatements. Her crescendos reach their apexes prematurely. Also, to my taste, both pianists play the middle section too fast; many do.

  • @mstalcup Thanks, I appreciate your comments. I will listen with those points in mind and see how my opinion changes.

  • I agree .....best among those recorded....

  • @jcrm05 best pianist ever is Martha Argerich...but Gilels is sooo amazingg

  • @HJKey I agree that no one can beat Argerich, But I really think Gilels comes a VERY close second!

  • This performance is definitely up there with Horowitz, Rubinstein and Argerich, all a hell of a lot better than that Kissin.

  • Not a single forgotten voice! Wonderful performance!

  • MASTER

  • The power and concentration of Gilels are unmatched. As I saw on another Gilels vid -- Sonata 26, someone said "Gilels is Beethoven." Well, I'm sure Beethoven would have loved Chopin. Chopin both taught and played Beethoven. As for Chopin and pianism, both Gilels and Richter looked to Sofronitsky. When Sofronitsky died, Gilels said the world had lost its greatest pianist.

  • @mackeey88 If you want to hear him personally, that is probably gonna be a bit tricky there.

  • naa martha argerich and wilhem kempff are the best !

  • @A8opi This comment is blasphemous. Agerich and Wilhelm Kempff no less. That's some particular taste you have there! Try Gould and Rubinstein.

  • WoW!Perfect !

    and i'm picky!

    most rewarding!

  • gilels just kicks ass... period

  • Bravo Gilels, marvelous interpretacion of Chopin's Polonaise op. 53.

  • @mackeey88 mee tooooo :)

  • This is absolutely polonaise!!!

    Genius!

  • Remember for your life Gilels is a BEAST

  • @PsychotikPandora I will. I will.

  • excellent rendition, although im partial to rubinstein and horowitz

  • Gilels forever !!!!

  • There may be some so called "Chopin players". But most of them can not compare with Gilels in techniques. And this piece requires techniques.

  • He is the one

  • Very special emotional, and expressive like always...

  • P.S. The great Heinrich Neuhaus, who was his teacher, said that gilels' sound is the best sound he has ever heard.

  • @AndreAx1985 Richter was also his Studen ,he made up two wonderful pianistes.

  • P.S. The great Heinrich Neuhaus, who was his teacher, said that gilels' sound is the best sound he has ever heard.

  • DEFINITELY the best interpretation of this piece on you tube (and here you can find Horowitz, Rubinstein, Argerich...). There's a thing that must be noticed: Gilels is the only pianist whose interpretantions on you tube are NEARLY always the best interpretation on youtube of the respective piece. This, together with the incredible emotions delivered by his amazing playing and his titanic pianism, led me to think that he must be the best pianist of the XX century.

  • @AndreAx1985

you live in your own reality mate ;] just listen to ekier, paleczny or malcuzynski.

thats how this polonaise should sound.

but i admit, his interpretation is good. surely far better than horowitzs.

  • @AndreAx1985

I agree with you that Gilels is consistently good.

I put him first on my list just I created an youtube account.

In fact, if I had to choose only one pianist. I would choose Gilels.

Note, however, that many praise pianists ONLY because they are famous.

Other excellent renditions of this polonaise are Peter Frankl's and Rafal Blechacz's, much better than renditions by other famous pianists!

However, as Blechacz is young and not SO famous many will "prefer" R, H, A, K, etc...

  • @ClassicalOJazz I must say that Giles' espressivo is wonderful

I like this polonaise with less pedal, but Giles does well

my favorite interpretation of this piece is Jean-Yves Thibaudet

  • people were in the border of their seats, almost up... that's how breathtaking it was to listen to him :o

  • is this available on cd anywhere? id love to own a copy

  • he is amazing. I cant believe i had never heard of him before!

  • @varghapay You should especially listen to his Beethoven! His recording of the Waldstein sonata is proof that God is real!

  • Gilels and Argerich are the best pianists ever.

  • Do not forget Arthur Rubistein, Horowits and Wilhem Backhaus

  • Wow! This is amazing!

  • I like the dynamics of this performance. Within a range of Chopin perscribes for this piece it lacks the dullness that I find in most performances. It therefor has more organic coherence, with genuine build-ups and without abruptiveness in the motorics.

  • This had to have been the most epic concert in all of history...

  • This man had such power and he makes all the little details in this musci come together. This is more diffi than i realized because the music goes forward while so much else happens that scale to b flat and the huge chords & then the build up in da emajor section. Enough for one concert this and f sharp polonaise. So much energy for this music.Polonaises scare me more than any of da scherzi. 5:50 repeated tones gorgeous !

  • The programm of the Gilels' concert 27.12.1977 includes:

    Schumann op.32;

    Brahms -Ballads, op.10;

    Chopin - Polonaise, C-moll

    Chopin -Sonata No 3;

    (bis)

Chopin - Etude A flat major (post.)

    Chopin - Polonaise, A flat major (Op.53)

  • moje ulubione

  • Rubinstein takes a more strict rythm for this polonaise. I do prefer rubinsteins version but Gilels is great too. His arms are free which wasn t the case with Horowitz in the later years. Gilels shows a beautiful sound relaxed and powerfull. the bodyandarmweight which flows directly into the fingertips without loosing any energy, this was the secret of Gilels , Richter and Rubinstein.... they three had a similar singing sound because of this.

  • no words.....just Gilels, and Gilels, and music, and something perfect on earth...

  • Amazing playing by an amazing pianist.

  • For me is Gilels the best pianist.

  • He and Rubinstein are my two favorite pianists. I love the way his hands dance on the keys

  • for me too....

  • @Alban165

    I totally agree!!

  • Perfect maestoso

  • A wonderful performance !!!

  • Спасибо, Эмиль Григорьевич!

  • Droiture, noblesse, sobrieté, fougue, du Gilels à l'état pur...

  • So perfect, the best pianist of all times!!!

  • It is written that way... Chopin wrote those C's that sound like "annoying chimes" LOL.. with as a separate voice with longer values than the moving 16th... many pianist play it that way ...

    Funny comment though... LOL

  • His hands are so relaxed an just perfect. Ive always had a prob with my hands. (i'll fix it though).

  • Perfection ! So deeply touching . Bravo Maestro Gilels !

  • I wis i could play in that hall

    legends have played that steinway

  • apart from horowitz, who has his own

  • what do you mean?

    wtf? lol

  • you said you wish you could play that piano, all the ledgends have played it, i agree, but horowitz uses his own for every concert, so he wont have played that one!

  • ohh well its not really about the stainway its more about the fact youre playing in that particular Hall

  • i agree :)

  • you think that, maybe, the great music flowing into those walls has seasoned them, like the oak in a barrel of fine wine. Weathered away the the awkward angles and added its own flow to the surface. So he music waves have created an atmosphere in which they can flow out and mature before fading away leaving room for the next waves. fun to think about

  • I like that analogy

  • up in the top 3 greats, easy

  • 2:05

  • this is impress!

  • Gilels has a great sense of Maestoso ,Rachmaninoff prelude op.23 no.2 is another example.

  • Best pianist ever?

  • What about the guy who actually wrote the piece? ; P

  • Well yes of course, I meant best interpreter (or I do not know how to say it in english) of classical songs. But sure, Chopin, Rachmaninov and Liszt!!

  • and, schumann, schubert, brahms, prokofiev, you can go on and on! :)

  • @jcrm05

This is not a question of simply "best".

  • @jcrm05 no.!

  • @jcrm05 An obviously impossible question (anyone here ever heard Chopin? Liszt? Clara Schumann?). I'd just say this guy belongs in most anyone's top ten, he's in my top 5. But the 20th c. was so rich with performers of the same caliber as Gilels (try this experiment sometime: go A to Z, starting with Argerich and Arrau and going all the way to Zimerman, see how many letters you have great pianists for), that it's ridiculous to even talk about the all-time best. This ain't the NFL, thank god...

  • @briandonohue100 Probably one of the best pianists of our time, though. IMO, of course.

  • Gilels plays very well everything.Bravo.

  • I like Berman's more fortissimo approach. This is still excellent however :)

  • As the Duke himself would say, Gilels is beyond category. Bravo.

  • beautiful piano piece...i wish i could play that good.

  • This is one of the most dignifed performances I have heard of this Polonaise . Brilliant

  • I've always enjoyed Gilels music. For the up-and-coming musicians, I'm very impressed with Rafal Blechacsz (hope I spelled the name correctly). In my opinion, Rafal will be the next true master of Chopin's music.

  • totally agree with himitsunosally chan

  • Sorry, I am Gilels lover. He is truly one of finest pianists existed. If everyone disagree with this opinion, everyone must see ear doctor, no? Or everyone know nothing of piano at all. Rachmaninoff, Lhevinne, Hoffmann, Backhaus, Rubinstein, Gieseking, Arrau, Horowitz, Richter, Gould, Pollini, Argerich. All in class by themself. Gilels also.

  • I had DG recording of polonaise in 1976. Which is my favorite. I don't need any other recording. To me, this polonaise is that recording period It has b minor sonata inside it, too. To me, b minor sonata is Gilels recording. I don't need any other recording period I lost my CD, so please upload those for me someone! It is unbelievably good. If everyone disagree, go to ear doctor period Sorry, wrong English and my request.

  • Comment removed

  • yes agreed, he's brilliant

  • I think his approach is a bit too rushed---I prefer the "grand" and elegant feeling as portrayed by Artur Rubinstein. Horowitz's aggressive take is similar to Gilel's here, but in this case prefer Horowitz's because he gives more drama.

  • I've never heard of this guy before today ....... he is amazing ! What a player.

  • It must have been a good day then!

  • brilliant, that's just how I like the piece played.

  • it is the BEST video

  • This is fantastic!

  • Just brilliant - one of my favourite pianists!

  • 伟大的肖邦,演奏也完美无缺,只是俄国人弹奏这首曲子有些带有讽刺性吧。

  • at 2:19 does he make a mistake?

  • Yes, and it's not the only one in that performance. Not that it matters, though. Listening to him makes reminds me of how genius he was, the kind of pianist you don't see nowadays. Along with Horowitz, Rubinstein, Cortot, Arrau, Barenboim... Truly musical.

  • what about martha argerich, she is the best person at this piece nowadays!

  • Well. Barenboim ist still alive...also Martha Agerich. Don´t forget S. Richter, E. Fischer

  • Does anyone know if Gilels recorded Liszt's Sonata in B minor?

  • OF COURSE!!! The pianist of this level always plays and records Liszt's Sonata in B minor, it can not be otherwise. he recorded it in Russia and other countries, too

  • Do you know where I could find that recording? It would be really amazing to hear that sonata performed by him.

  • I have a lot of Gilels recordings, including several versions of Liszt's sonata. Contact me if you wish to acquire......

  • can i have one?

  • Heyhey

Do you have Gilels' Rachmaninoff and Chopin's recordings????

  • I am a fervent collector of recordings by Emil Gilels. I have many commercial and non-commercial recordings. I have indeed recordings of his Rachmaninoy and Chopin performances. His Rachnaninov D minor concerto and first Chopin concerto with Kirill Kondrashin are very great.

  • Can I have them? Preferably Rachmanioff Preludes and Chopin Polonaise....

  • where did you get them from?

  • My favourite pianist, my favourite version of this wonderful polonaise!

    What theatre is this?

  • It is the Moscow State Theater, I think.

  • This is in the Grand Hall of Moscow Conservatory - the main piano performance stage of the world of the 20 century and even today...

  • do graduating students of this conservatory perform here as well? or just artists of high calibre

  • This is the Great Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, the main concert venue in Moscow

  • Vous ne connaissez pas Margulis??

  • Bravo! Bravo, Bravo!!!! This is how this piece should be played - the man exudes confidence, passion, tempo, and depth. Thanks so much for posting this great performance! He is a shining star!!!!

  • I agree with you

  • Yes, sissichopin91.....isn't he wonderful? I would dearly love to see him in concert. How about you?

  • Unfortunately Gilels is died!!!

I added you like a youtube friend!!!

Everytime i listen this performance, i say: Oh my God, this men was a genius of the piano!

  • Anche stasera guardando, con tanta emozione, le tue mani d'oro sulla tastiera, prego per te!

  • Thank You, Jaroslaw,

You keep applause in this video.

  • pretty well played but the sound doesnt suit so right to this polonaise, compare to lazar bermann version, its much better!

but nevertheless gilels is gilels,of course!

  • What a Virtuoso..Emil Gilels FTW!

  • Check out him and Cleveland doing Beethoven Concerto#5

    1974. The best.

  • wow..

  • Какое благородство!

  • Gilels: it's absolutely beautiful. God would be proud. Some people's comments make me embarrassed for America. What's wrong with you people.

  • Quit disgracing our country with your drivel please. Its bad enough as it is with Snoop Dogg as a national icon, and the village idiot W polluting the beloved White House for the past 8 years.

  • Thank you.

  • du grand Gilels, classicisme et sobriété, c'est superbe.

  • This is just wonderful!! Why could I not have seen him?? All of my favorite artists are dead!! He is my pianistic hero.

  • like hearing this hackneyed old piece as if for the first time, far and away the best performance I have heard of this work, but what else would you expect after all, this is the legendary Gilels , an absolute Titan of the keyboard. Who are these uneducated idiots who say he should have been better known etc and we would like to hear more of him, probably Americans i guess , the greatest virtuosi:gilels, Michelangeli and Richter toured the US only under sufference, and who could blame them?

  • I am American and although I can see where you are coming from, believe me I live here haha, we're not all that bad. Some of us live for this sort of great artistry just like others all over the world. Generalization is a poor thing to go by :/

  • Gilels is awesome. I can't say enough about his playing and showmanship...

  • The problem with Horowitz is that you usually heard more Horowitz than the composer he was playing. For a few things that worked OK, but not as a whole.

  • Hearing the composer was never a necessity. Even Chopin himself (along with Grieg) both said so, after hearing Liszt play their music. They both said that Liszt's performances of a musical piece changed it, of course, as he did NOT play in the voice of the composer, and rather his own, and to great success

I'm sure if Horowitz's performances didn't work out as a whole, he wouldn't be famous. He's definitely not famous for his hideous hand posture. =p

  • One of the most moving performances I've heard

of this polonaise, much more so than Horowitz or Argerich, he's so obviously dedicated to the music, thanks for posting.

  • I agree Horowitz version no where near as good as this or other versions,Gilels never had the same recognition as Horowitz or Richter in his career I think now he is no lo nger with us people are starting to appreciate his unique gifts, I don't know why he didn't get the same recognition, for me Gilels and Richter are the greatest,Horowitz not even in my top ten.

  • i agree too, cause actually horowitz' impression is the worst in my opinion.....i heard it and really, there's like no power in his playing at all

  • I thing, a little bit to fast

  • He striked me, on this piece, he's absolutely wonderful and have a very beatiful sound!!! And thes people who leave at the end pfff, it's ridiculous...

  • U have a point, about people leaving; this was an encore among many other encores at the end of a long recital, so I believe overall his recital was very well appreciated.

  • I believe too :)
