It failed because Singer didn't pay attention to what the fans wanted in a Superman film. Brandon Routh was terrific as Superman but he never had an action fight scene.
Superman Returns sucked. They tried to humanize Superman, even though he grew up as a human. What he did was crap, made Supes a WUSS, getting beat up and ending up in the hospital, WTF?! I literally walked out of the theater to go watch Spider-Man 3
I do hope that he proves me wrong, though. At this point, all I'm hoping for is a decent superhero film. If he fails, I'm sticking to comics for superhero relief.......I wonder what Richard Donner is up to.
I don't wish that on Zack, or anyone for that matter, but to be given a project of this size just doesn't seem like a good idea. I would entrust Spielberg with a picture of this degree, but then again, who wouldn't? Peter Jackson would do phenomenally, but he's a lot on his plate with the Hobbit films. Possibly James Cameron, but he's gonna remain busy as hell with his new child, Avatar. It doesn't really matter, because Zack has already started filming, so now we sit back and hope for the best.
No, I'm not, because quite frankly, I hated Watchmen and Sucker Punch. I will admit that I enjoyed 300 and the Dawn of the Dead remake, but he seems to be on a shit streak. Sort of like the Shyamalan case. Enjoyed The Sixth Sense, loved Unbreakable, but it seemed to head downhill from there. The Village was a one-time view, not too impressive, but whatever. Then came the embarrassing Lady in the Water, followed by the awful The Happening, all the way to the abomination that I dare not name.
I like the cast of superman but a bit young, Lex luthor and jimmy olson is great ,but Lois...nothing Lois lane in her....the story a bit lame....nothing new...
Bryan Singer is failing. He never made Magneto control energy and create force fields because they are PART OF HIS POWERS! He even made a bad Lois Lane.
IT FAILED CUZ BRYAN SINGER IS GAY AND HAS NO BUSINESS MAKING A TESTOSTERONE MOVIE LIKE SUPERMAN. IT WAS A QUEER MOVIE AND GOT QUEER REVIEWS. THIS REPORTER BITCH SUCKS MY SALTY BALLS, TOO!!
Although not the most vital in the Superman franchise, the film was excellent. Good storyline and fantastic visuals. I give props to Bryan for making the film he wanted to make rather than create a film to appease audiences........I'm not going to watch the Snyder flick, though.
They needed a more muscular looking guy George Reeve, Christopher Reeves, Dean Cain, and Tom Welling are all more muscular looking. They needed more action and catching an airplane was used in earlier Superman movie, needed a more original plot and maybe another villian as Lex is over used.
I thought "Returns" was a pretty good film, myself. I would like to see Brandon Routh don the cape again, not to mention Kevin Spacey as an awesome Lex Luthor. But I guess that won't be happening. As for the christian references, I didn't pick up on those at all... but I'm not religious either, so...
Superman is a bad ass and I think Bryan Singer forgot that when he directed 'Superman Returns'....Sack Snyder's 'Man of Steel' is going to finally give Superman justice on the big screen.
Superman Returns sucked because the movie was TERRRRRRRRIBLE! I wish I had heard this before I went to see that crap. It had nothing to do with religion, the script was terrible, the actors were wrong, and it should have been a standalone movie. I see he still hasn't gotten it because he still says he would have made a remake. Bryan Singer -- YOU SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the kid was dumb but what killed it for me was the Lex Luthor Evil Real Estate Plot. Didn't we already get that in the Richard Donner movies? It was fine back then but seeing it another time was just totally uninspiring.
i actually loved it, it was a good movie, and just another superhero action flick like some of the others, it was classy compared to some of the other hero movies
i didn't watch it, superman really isn't my type of superhero, purely because he has it so easy i prefer heroes like batman or kick-ass that actually have to work hard and train. what am i saying? look how hard clarke has it... super strength... super speed... the power of flight... laser beams shooting from his eyes?... oh and i almost forgot near-INVINCIBILITY
Superman's costume was too dark. His costume should reflect a hope for a brighter tomorrow. Plus the costume should of been more similar too Christopher Reeves look. I would say keep the chest piece, but brighter cape. the shorts were too short, it should of been cut above the waist, not below, again like Reeves costume. Maybe keep the belt, idk.
Ultimately, it didn't work because the delivery was bad. I could have accepted the general premise, but the mix was too corny, too sugary. I don't want mindless entertainment (even if it's a summer blockbuster). I must care for the characters, and thus care for what they're going through. Even though Superman is a nice, his movie doesn't have to be "nice." The movie was just too smushy and dormant for its own good.
Bryan Singer is right about everything he said. It should have been more action, less romance. What he failed to mention is that we needed a more power villain, anyone but Lex Luthor.
The main things wrong with "Superman Returns" was that Lois was too much of a bitch and we didn't need that side story of the wimpy and sick kid being Superman's. Of course, I was hoping that Bizarro would of been in a future project by Singer, being that there were some things that said it may happen, especially the game that featured a Bizarro side game.
Well, the idea of taking superman to a level like that is kind of endearing, it just didn't work with this movie. For a superhero film such as Superman Returns, you need some action to bring a substance to the movie. It was just poorly written, and the weak performances certainly didn't help it either.
Superman is a lame ass superhero, Brian is a great director. However he should have left X-Men, worst decision of his career.

Just a 2 hour hardcore action movie with Superman saving Metropolis.

Kevin Spacey would have been the ultimate Brainiac.
