Ive been looking around forever locally for a Volkswagen Bug that I could buy and take care of, maybe fix up some and use for a daily driver, they are almost impossible to find in these parts. Yet there is a big parts house here that does also carry just about every part imaginable for them.
The VW Bug might be better in a rollover than most cars and especially modern cars, but it's so miuch more likely to roll that the advantage is liklely cancelled. Not trying to rag on them but the fact is, iit was never a good car overall. OK for low speeds around town or on dirt roards and such but not "modern" American roads of teh past 50 years.
Glad i was in one when i rolled mine.I would of been dead in a new car,but not in a good german built car with real steel. Not beer cans and plastic like other cars are made of.And i drove it home 200 miles back to Redondo Bch after we fliped it back right side up.
isn't the bug the 2nd most dangerous car to drive? just behind the corvette stingray in 1st place? bugs are egg shells literally, I had not one, not 5 but tons of them and I love them but crashing in one is a damn nightmare lol. Driving a turbo one with 240 hp on a racetrack against a 2004 porsche and beating him is priceless though, they are awesome little machines, brilliant thinking by the germans.
Battery is under the seat, where it was not uncommon for it to short out.
Almost no trunk room.
Hard to get in the back seat.
Early suspension system was bad.
Basically, it's only a good car in third world conditions. Bad roads you are going to drive slowly on, it's better than most cars, even the modern front wheel drive (more clearance) but that is about it.
@koolbossjock I don't want to get into one of these stupid online wars but I do want to point out, calling som eone
"full of shit" wiithout actuallly refuting anything is pure name calling. Any Kindergartener and most toddlers can do it. What precisely was I wrong about?
1. Too light in front. Yes, it will go through a lot of mud and snow, you just won't be able to steer it while it does. Or for that matter, when it's on a clean dry road.
2. Gas tank in front is fire hazard.
3. Gas lines near engine often caused fires.
4. The center of effort is forward of the center of mass, so that a crosswind makes the car veer very violently.
5. For it's size and weight, not much room inside.
im a bug lover but i just hate that the fact that it has a rear engine makes it so fragile, in any type of accident because its only the chasis that protects it. This is way i always get a little bit nerveus when driving my bug, cause a dont want nothig to happen to it.
great video. after owning and rebuilding 3 of these, I can attest that they are the most ill-concieved, poorly built, hardest to work on, and most dangerous car i have ever seen. death traps. they were the psychotic dream of a madman in germany. they should all be recycled.
Safety factor I'm on the same page as you... but as far as ill-conceived and poorly designed and built, that's a load of shit. These cars have been around a long time, so the Germans obviously built them with durability and longevity in mind, at least at the time. Hardest to work on? Lol, are you kidding me? Air-cooled VW Bugs are the simplest car to work on of anything I've ever seen (go karts don't count). Hitler didn't conceive the VW, BTW, Ferdinand Porsche did.
Some of these are flat out nasty...fatal. :38, 1:32, 2:00 looks like someone went through the windshield, or at least busted it with their head, 2:02, and then 2:05 (I hope that car was empty!). I think 2:25 and 2:29 show different angles of the same crash (and check out the mudders on the other car!). But the one at 1:29 is just gruesome...that's a dead guy hanging out the door you know. I wonder if that's Germany in WWII, or South America post-war? There were very few Beetles made before 1945.
driving is not a sport lol (an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment) oh yeah, really active while sitting on your ass

Until you sit in the cockpitof a racecar, and run for 30 minutes, dont say its easy.
@hankeybillfred i never said it was easy i said it wasn't a sport... And if you knew allot about exercising and athletic ability, you would know that loosing even 5 pounds in one day is impossible...you can't loose that much weight if you ran 10 miles a day you are certainly not going to loose it sitting on your ass in a car
It iS physical. it is VERY physical, have you ever raced a car? Have you done circuit racing? No? THEN DONT FUCKING SAY ITS NOT A SPORT WHEN IT CLEARLY IS.
Its not a fucking lazy ass relaxed sport like you think, quit judging based on what you see, get in a car, race without power steering, power brakes, for 200 laps, 500 miles, and then tell me its not a sport, that its not a workout, that its not physical, I KNOW you cant do it.
@curtismichael14 By your own definition, driving is a sport. You said "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another". Even driving long distances on a highway is proven to be extremely fatiguing, driving in the Baja 1000 or in a 500 mile race is far worse. You have to be alert, tense for the duration, shifting, steering, braking in carefully modulated fashion. I'd say that means exertion and skill (way more than golf!)
@curtismichael14 " there are three types of sports; bullfighting, motor racing and mountaineering, all the rest are merely games. " - Earnest Hemingway
@curtismichael14 You would be exhausted after one lap in an F1 car or one stage in the WRC. In facft I'd be surprised if someone like you could even manage that much.
@curtismichael14 Try driving a sports car with heavy steering, a long, heavy clutch, and a retardedly close shift pattern on a twisty back road whilst really pushing it. It is a physically and mentally draining experience. Now try doing that at Le Mans with the difficulty of those inputs amplified x 5 while reaching speeds of 250 miles per hour and being subjected to high g-forces... for 24 hours.
Your fat ass has literally no comprehension of what spirited driving is. YES I MAD.
@turd8687 I'm a Ford and VW nut and both are great cars. If you want to compare the the two for quality they are both good. A stock '50 Ford car has enough power to chirp the tires and top out at 90mph and stops well enough to where I would not hesitate to drive one in traffic although it gets about 15mpg. A stock '50 VW bug is horribly underpowered, does not stop and can't keep up with traffic but gets about 30mpg. It's like comparing apples and oranges, they are just different cars.
I think VW Beetles have been thorugh everything, yet they still roam the streets after almost 10 years after their production stop in 2003 here in Mexico
I got hit in the back by a big 4 wheeler. I chased it but did not catch him. a stock 4 banger can't catch a V8 pick up. I still have her. she also got hit by a cop car as well. she is a 72.
@munster322 She is ok now I have had her since 77. we have gone places together she is a tough old girl. she and I love to do doughnuts. she needs some front end work. I don't that any more I have a TJ for offroading now. all of my kids have driven her . I learned how to drive man trans on the 405 in LA CA. 4th of july. scared me real bad.
@kowz4u Wow thats a long time good for you.Ive had my 58 for 9 years and the 66 for 12 years.I drive the 1958 as a daily driver but my poor 66 some jerk beat the car and damaged her really bad so i have alot of body work to do,but im going to keep her in the family.1977 is about the time i started getting into vws i was 7 at the time and ive been obsessed with them ever since ha ha.
I think this was what killed them off in the U.S.....Not safe in crashes, and they couldn`t make em sturdier and cheap!......I had a 64 ,68,and a 67/68 crossover.and a 7?super/ auto stick.(parts only)rust bucket...maybe a crumple area would help and air bags but???????full cage to make it safer on today`s roads.
i can't wait to get a beetle (not being sarcastic), i love classic cars, i hate modern day cars, most of them are FWD plastic pieces of shit, i want a old RWD flat 4 classic! plus iv found a beetle is the cheapest car for me to insure and i won't pay and road tax am i right?
My Bug wrote off a TVR last year and it still lives, just home from work in it tonight. No probs in 6" of snow this morning. This is a very sad vid though
lol the end is quite funny rubber band rebuild kit , nice ,,, but not many people know that the fastest four cylinder dragster in the world is a vw based air cooled engine dragster ...

This was not fun to watch. It's pretty cool how the bug can be the most produced car ever, but still be so unique. And the diversity that exists with how different people make theirs is awesome too, it's rare for any two bugs to be exactly alike.
1:35 is my orange Beetle 6 years ago, still got it now :-(
No-where would repair it as it was a 1303 and the whole car and chassis twisted - a problem with 1303 suspension systems. It's currently in my garage being re-incarnated into a half-beetle Herbie-replica trailer
Wow super beatles are so gay. I have a 66 and it's a great work in progress. It's a shame for all these bugs. Fact is most of them will sit in a junkyard the rest of their lives and rust! (o\_!_/o) VW.
VW fanatics are kind of like urban hipsters: completely brainwashed and utterly loyal to a movement controlled by elitists that dictate what is cool, what is allowable and what will be tolerated in bespoke movement.
@zapwatt Oh my God, thats pretty much how I feel, they're mostly brand dead sheep that all do the same junk to their 30 year old classics, ironic considering how unique the Beetle was visually.
@zapwatt This statement couldn't be further from the truth. From what you're saying, I take it you've never actually been to a VW show, or taken a look through a Hot VWs magazine and seen the diversity amongst some of these rides. We're not all sheep who follow the same "trend" or think there is only one way to restore a Volkswagen. Do us a favor and try researching the VW hobby a little more before you run off at the mouth about something you know completely nothing about......
@n2vdubz Hey man, I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. The person that doesn't know what they're talking about is you because you don't know anything about me. Unlike you I live in the VW customizing capitol of the world, the West coast! A very close friend of mine is a mechanic at the most esteemed VW shop in Seattle: Wolfsberg Motors. I know all about the "patina" polishing, pseudo-original hypocrites in the scene. let's face it, there's nothing too unique about doing up a VW in the 1st place.
@zapwatt Well I'm glad to see you have atleast "some" knowledge of the VW scene, all be it a small part of it. The whole "patina" Hoodride look may be what seem like it's the only way to do up a Volkswagen, but there are a vast number of styles that you seem to be overlooking. Cal Look, Resto Rod, Rat Rod, Mulholland Look, Fully Restored, Baja...... Maybe where you're at it seems like the Patina look has over run your area, but you shouldn't base your opinion just by your geographical location.
That really sucks! BTW, Hitler only put out the proposition of a car for the people and offered a shop, money, equipment, employees, and government backing. It's not Hitler's car. Mercedes, Tatra, and a few others tried but Dr. Ferdinand Porsche won the deal. It's Porsche's car!!!!
My dad has a 1970 and i think a 1963 his 1970 is possibly the one he is putting together now it might have: VW 4cilinder engine ,super charger, and a 32 gallon gastank if im correct.
i just like the way they look but i dont think i would ever buy one

Design flaws of the bug:
1. Too light in front. Yes, it will go through a lot of mud and snow, you just won't be able to steer it while it does. Or for that matter, when it's on a clean dry road.
2. Gas tank in front is fire hazard.

5. For it's size and weight, not much room inside.
6. The engine is weak all but last few years.

VW fanatics are kind of like urban hipsters: completely brainwashed and utterly loyal to a movement controlled by elitists that dictate what is cool, what is allowable and what will be tolerated in bespoke movement.
zapwatt 1 year ago
@zapwatt Oh my God, thats pretty much how I feel, they're mostly brand dead sheep that all do the same junk to their 30 year old classics, ironic considering how unique the Beetle was visually.
Ryoku75 1 year ago
@zapwatt This statement couldn't be further from the truth. From what you're saying, I take it you've never actually been to a VW show, or taken a look through a Hot VWs magazine and seen the diversity amongst some of these rides. We're not all sheep who follow the same "trend" or think there is only one way to restore a Volkswagen. Do us a favor and try researching the VW hobby a little more before you run off at the mouth about something you know completely nothing about......
n2vdubz 1 year ago
@n2vdubz Hey man, I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. The person that doesn't know what they're talking about is you because you don't know anything about me. Unlike you I live in the VW customizing capitol of the world, the West coast! A very close friend of mine is a mechanic at the most esteemed VW shop in Seattle: Wolfsberg Motors. I know all about the "patina" polishing, pseudo-original hypocrites in the scene. let's face it, there's nothing too unique about doing up a VW in the 1st place.
zapwatt 1 year ago
