  • goddamit if only i could mute his voice, chords sound very good

  • 2:27 - 3:04 has gotta be the best bit ever

  • This is the equivalent of Van Gogh in music.

  • 3:50 :D

  • One of my favorite songs, wow/...

  • 2:19 for porcupine

  • He may of recorded this for drug money, but the music on it comes from a place few people have been. Don't get wrong drugs are bad, but even he has said he views his addicition as a time where he truly discovered who he was. This music comes from a place so far in the human psyche and shouldn't be viewed as some atonal nonsense. Music is emotion and if this is how he felt, its a higher form of art than most musicians even know.

  • The lowest point in his life, but he STILL plays guitar better than me!!!

  • Man this is some good shit.

This is probably the weirdest reference I could make but the guitar from 1:21 to 1:40 reminds me of the main riff from Terrible Angels by Cocorosie a lot. Just throwing that out there.

  • @LoserBabyLuna hey you're right!!! there are some notes that are completely the same of the intro of this song!!

  • @fungus4801

I didnt knew that he removed it from sale.

yeah,of course he did some stupid shit(like removing the record i think is dumb).

a man should take responsibility for his deeds.

i also discovered some voices in the net that he gave river phoenix the speedball without knowing what it was and even after he died, john kept on dealing.

    that is,if true,some real bullshit.

but to come back to the album:i find it some incredible piece of art.

  • the guitar at 3:13

  • The vast majority of musicians just don't have the balls to put something like this out. Hubert Selby used to say a lot of men were horrible writers because they let their own dicks get in the way of the story. John is totally pure for this reason, being completely honest to us and himself, unafraid to display his bare-naked soul.

  • AHHAHAHAHAHAA

  • You Know I Once Thought This Album Was Sort of a Tragic MasterPiece, being Only Tragic Because of My Preconceived Notions of John's State Through The Use of Whatever Substance He Chose at The Time Period....but the More I Listen to This Album There is Simply NOTHING Tragic About It. It's Brilliant Beyond Words to Define........True Art! Re-Release This Album John!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Outsider557

I don't know if you heard "Here, Air" which was recorded with The Empyrean sessions, but it resembles this stuff, just a bit more produced, due to the fact that John had a studio at his disposal. Niandra Lades was also recorded when he was NOT on drugs, and some of these songs were, too. He's just as great sober -- the same person, in fact.

  • @mussman717word that's what he said, but i really don't think that songs like my smile is a rifle or blood on my neck or as can be were recorded when he was sober. not on heroine - maybe. but sure on weed or something. check out every other album he made when he was sober and you'll see that they feel a bit different - though great, still diffferent.

  • @TehSorso

Oh, I'm not debating the fact that he was under the influence of herbal substances, but he wasn't on heroin when most of the stuff was recorded. Everybody just assumes he was.

  • @mussman717word agree. though on Smile From i guess he was on heroin on most of the album.

  • @TehSorso

He did release Smile for drug money, but lot of these songs are out-takes from Niandra. "A Fall Thru the Ground" was even recorded when he John was 18. All the songs on both albums were recorded at completely different times, so it's hard to decipher.

  • there is nothing here to feel sad for.

    he expresses himself.

who except him had the courage to do such an album?

  • @TheGreenBlackbird alot of people express themselves through musik

  • @TheGreenBlackbird it wasn't courage, it was money to fund his addiction... he's removed it from sales now. so yes, there is something here to feel sad for.

  • @TheGreenBlackbird not to take anything away from john but the album was released for drug money. not to express himself. although each and every song he writes expresses himself more than any other artist

  • @bddb9

yes he needed money for drugs, but he didnt make an albums to souly fund a drug addiction. theres no way to say that and not take away from his art.

  • @shanelleevelynainsco ya there is. i'm saying that the he wrote the songs to express himself in an artful form but he released the album for the money..

  • @TheGreenBlackbird to be fair he pulled the record of shelves. He used the money for drugs. He regretted it and when asked about it doesnt acknowledge it. I love the man though

  • this song and in general the whole album makes me sad about john's condition that time.. :(

  • think this album is just great,

anyway that's a sad story, but what he is doing now, everything he recorderes since that time really give me energy and inspiration, thanks john!

  • Nice. Changes. I've never heard Frusciante sample anyone in his songs.

  • awesome frusciante always be remebered for his two first solo albums and californication

  • @porosio dont forget BSSM

  • @dieselthediesel

    what is BSSM?

  • @DrAtmo blood sugar sex magik! now that i have done you this favour, do me the favour of checking out my frusciante covers haha

  • beautiful song :P
