Well, the guy playing Eugene moved to another state and Hank Braxtan lost contact with him, so he needed to come up with some explanation for why Eugene wouldn't be in the movie. The web comic was cool but sad, in the very end of it, it's at Eugene's funeral, and you see the original Ghostbusters joining Ed's team in mourning him.
