Tony Dickel's point about the importance of interpersonal relationships being more important that the contract is probably relevant across many asian countries. Certainly here in Japan, if there is no relationship there is no business, no matter what you have to sell.
Vietnamese were always happy to do both, as both make money, and that's the name of the game. I think contracts were also seen as a 'modern' working style, which earned extra credibility with your peers. Complicated environment? You bet.
Another great reason to visit more countries and learn their ways of life :) The more we learn the better we will be at making businesses grow in such places.
