CORRECTION: Gratton Dalton was killed at Coffeyville along with brother Bob and 2 others. It was Emmett Dalton, shot 23 times (probably buckshot)who survived. He was imprisoned for 14 years then pardoned. He became a tech advisor on Western films and later starred in the movie version of his book "Beyond the Law" in 1918. In 1931 he published "When the Daltons Rode" made into a movie starring Randolph Scott. INTERESTING FACT: Emmett's age at the time of the raid? Twenty One...
I read back in the 70's that a bunch of the Eagles, Jackson Browne and JD Souther were hanging out and reading a book about the old West called "Bloodletters and Badmen". I found the book at the Library and having read the chapter on the Coffeeville raid most of this album's references became clear. If i remember right, Gratton Dalton went to jail for many years and after his release he was a "technical" advisor to a silent movie of the Coffeyville incident that killed 2 of his brothers.
I LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOOVE THE WHOLE OUTLAW THEME. I have an INORDINATE fascination with all things old western and outlaws and guns and duels, and the like. :D The Eagles epitomized this with the release of their best album, Desperado, in 1973.
The first pic is of a dead Bill Doolin. Several others are of various Dalton brothers, including the famous one of them laid out in Coffeyville. I've always figured the song "Desperado" was written with either Bob or Emmett Dalton in mind, but I don't know for sure.
They say the eagles wanted to make a comparison between outlaws and the rockstars they were back then. The whole concept album had the Western Outlaws as a background story.
perhaps...but I wrote an article a while back based on the "Prodigal Son" and as I was writing and thinking through the story, I couldn't help but think of "Desperado". I doubt if the Eagles had the story in mind when they penned the words, but it just goes to show how great music can inspire other works

You obviously know NOTHING about the American Old West. Poor people's only options other than backbreaking labor for bare survival were crime and prostition. That was IT. "Working hard" does no good when THERE ARE NO JOBS.
I guess no... they just wanted easy money, and about knowing NOTHING, that's not true, it's just that the western movies made of that fictious stories a history of the old west, and the more the idea is accepted the more it'll be spread, and people will accept that stealing and being a thief isn't that bad.. I don't know a lot but may be there's a truth that I'm not seeing, may be I'm old fashioned lol
The REALITY of the Old West was actually WORSE than the FICTION. The fiction sanitizes the reality, like turning Calamity Jane into a fun cowgirl rather than what she was, a prostitute who got the nickname calamity because she gave gonorhea to thousands of men.
In today's technologized America it's different; there are opportunities. In those days, people survived by whatever means necessary.
I think you are all missing the point...the Eagles are relating being in the music business as a band to being an outlaw back then...hell the album cover had them all dead and tied up with record executives standing over them with shotguns? Doolin/Dalton is Henley/Frey...listen to the song in that context and you hear "till Bill Doolin...met Bill Dalton...they were working cheap...just biding time"...then they laughed...and said I'm going...so they left..that peaceful life behind"..it's R&R..
my favorite Eagles Album...and they have alot of great ones...this is probably the most underated...and IMHO the best...right down to the cover with the Eagles lying dead on a western street and the record company execs holding shotguns over them...
This song was probably one of the COOLEST songs they ever DID! I sent this Video to a friend of mine, that as "yoots" we fucking wore this song out, we were oddballs, always wanted to be GUNSLINGERS in Coffeyville!
I believe it was 1890 in Coffeyville, Ks. they tried to rob 2 banks at the same time...got shot to hell...just a damn good album with great story telling...
Amazing song, probably one of the best from their first album. I remember listening to this album when my parents werent home so they didnt think i liked their music. lol
It was actually their second album. Eagles first album was their self-titled album with "take it easy" and "witchy woman" on it. This one is their best though.
This song is so painfull, but surprisingly full of hope... how can it be so ? I love the Eagles, have been listening to them for all my life, and finally got to see them in the Globe, Stockhlm march 30. Still loving them.

I'me pretty sure the song is beautiful, but I wonder where's the greatness, they were robbers, just wondering if stealing banks is a heroic act ?
fastoch13 3 years ago
The MUSIC is the greatness.
Yes, they were robbers, and you would be too if you were penniless in the American Old West.
AuroraABC 3 years ago
The MUSIC is great yes, but making of stealing banks a job... humm.
What about working hard ? or they just loved easy money and faithless women ;)

Well, The song and video are awesome. I don't promote robbing banks; only writing great songs especially when they fit in with history like this.
