Roger Waters kind of made me the person I am today, yet the persistent officiality of the "genius" tag is still unsettling somehow. But this is not the case with Ray Charles. I think the difference may be that Charles had the EXACT attributes to match - energy, generosity, infectious joy - whereas Waters has to be chewed like overcooked meat until it turns into a rich, nutritious delicacy, which not everyone is willing to do.

If Waters was the "genius behind the band" LOL, then why did thePink Floyd go on to make a album at #3 without him? He couldn't do well Solo even with Clapton, who he was jealous of! He spit on his audience! He wanted to use Live 8 to promote his career and his "concepts" and Gilmour said he thought the music should be played the way the fans want to hear it. Gilmour tried to keep the peace between Waters and the other bandmates, until he drove him away as well!
While I agree that Waters was a bit of a prick he did write every song on Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. For all his failings he could rightly be called a musical genius. Turn the lights off, put on Dark Side and listen to the whole album from start to finnish. I would call that genius.

Us and Them, the Great Gig in The Sky and the jazziness in the album was written by Wright, which is why it is so different then the Wall and why Waters and Wright clashed when making The Wall. Wright wanted to continue with the jazz, and Wright lost. Floyd did return to jazz/rock after Waters left the band.
@MrCharlsie79 You need to check you credits on DSOTM as Waters did not write every song. He is listed as the only writter on: Money, Brain Damage & Eclipse. However, Any Colour You Like is Gilmour, Mason & Wright, & Speak To Me is Mason. The other songs are lyrics by Waters Music by Wright & Gilmour. DSOFM is very much a group work, definitely acknowldged by the group as largely influenced by Waters but by no means is the album entirely his writting.

@MrCharlsie79 : Actually that was what the fight was all about. Roger didn't write every song on those two albums. He wrote the Lyrics on most if not all of the songs. Comfortably Numb was claimed and won by David. The problem was that the whole band, not the least Richard Wright, had enormous impact on the MUSIC of the songs. The prick part came in because Roger claimed exclusive rights to all the songs and it just wasn't true. Anyway, it's a shame that Pink Floyd ended too early. Great synergy

You know, I don't think Roger's really as big of an asshole as everybody says he is. Maybe around The Wall and The Final Cut he was being an asshole but after that everybody started acting like he was always one and he was forever after that. Even Nick Mason says in his book Inside Out that the fueds that started in Pink Floyd around that time weren't as intense as the media and all the fans made it out to be and that a lot of it was blown way out of proportion.

I don't know if I see the issue "going away," it's just that people HAVE GOT to be careful what media soursce (and who's paying for it, i.e; FOX 'news') they get their mis/information from. It's near impossible to know whom to trust as far as corporate media is concerned. and i thing that the division bell and (specially high hopes) is a great album, it doesn't have the Roger touch, but hell it contains some great David solos, but eventually nothing compares to the wall, it's a masterpiece.
For Pink Floyd, I think playing live and touring would be very easy. Everyone's equal on tour. Everyone has their part to play and their instrument to play. It's the studio, royalties and money that drives all the hard feelings in Pink Floyd.
Also, I'd be interested in knowing if Roger would be willing to play 80s/90s Pink Floyd songs (assuming concertgoers wanted to hear any given the lineup). Considering what's happened in Yes, I doubt it.

So you hate Roger, but love the songs that Dave sung, even though Roger wrote them (lyrics and all, as you so graciously put it). I wouldn't say Rog was the only genius behind PF, but he certainly is a large part of the reason they are as big as they are.
Dave was crucial. But by the same token I find the albums without roger unlistenable because he gave so much feeling to the band and it was absent on AMLOR and division bell
I agree except for one album. AMLOR was an amazing non-water album for myself. Specialy for "Yet another movie", "Sorow" and "Terminal frost". Division Bell is a huge deception i think.

I've seen Pink Floyd in 1994 in Montréal with 70 000 lazers fans, and i was yawning the whole show. I've seen two big pigs and lazers, but i did'nt see my favorite band. I did'nt see anyone from Pink Floyd.

Roger Waters kind of made me the person I am today, yet the persistent officiality of the "genius" tag is still unsettling somehow. But this is not the case with Ray Charles. I think the difference may be that Charles had the EXACT attributes to match - energy, generosity, infectious joy - whereas Waters has to be chewed like overcooked meat until it turns into a rich, nutritious delicacy, which not everyone is willing to do.

If Waters was the "genius behind the band" LOL, then why did thePink Floyd go on to make a album at #3 without him? He couldn't do well Solo even with Clapton, who he was jealous of! He spit on his audience! He wanted to use Live 8 to promote his career and his "concepts" and Gilmour said he thought the music should be played the way the fans want to hear it. Gilmour tried to keep the peace between Waters and the other bandmates, until he drove him away as well!

While I agree that Waters was a bit of a prick he did write every song on Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. For all his failings he could rightly be called a musical genius. Turn the lights off, put on Dark Side and listen to the whole album from start to finnish. I would call that genius.

Us and Them, the Great Gig in The Sky and the jazziness in the album was written by Wright, which is why it is so different then the Wall and why Waters and Wright clashed when making The Wall. Wright wanted to continue with the jazz, and Wright lost. Floyd did return to jazz/rock after Waters left the band.

@MrCharlsie79 You need to check you credits on DSOTM as Waters did not write every song. He is listed as the only writter on: Money, Brain Damage & Eclipse. However, Any Colour You Like is Gilmour, Mason & Wright, & Speak To Me is Mason. The other songs are lyrics by Waters Music by Wright & Gilmour. DSOFM is very much a group work, definitely acknowldged by the group as largely influenced by Waters but by no means is the album entirely his writting.

Comfortably Numb was claimed and won by David. The problem was that the whole band, not the least Richard Wright, had enormous impact on the MUSIC of the songs. The prick part came in because Roger claimed exclusive rights to all the songs and it just wasn't true. Anyway, it's a shame that Pink Floyd ended too early. Great synergy

You know, I don't think Roger's really as big of an asshole as everybody says he is. Maybe around The Wall and The Final Cut he was being an asshole but after that everybody started acting like he was always one and he was forever after that. Even Nick Mason says in his book Inside Out that the fueds that started in Pink Floyd around that time weren't as intense as the media and all the fans made it out to be and that a lot of it was blown way out of proportion.

I don't know if I see the issue "going away," it's just that people HAVE GOT to be careful what media soursce (and who's paying for it, i.e; FOX 'news') they get their mis/information from. It's near impossible to know whom to trust as far as corporate media is concerned. I hold stead fast in my belief that global warming is still an issue that it is very much an issue we all will have to contend with.

For Pink Floyd, I think playing live and touring would be very easy. Everyone's equal on tour. Everyone has their part to play and their instrument to play. It's the studio, royalties and money that drives all the hard feelings in Pink Floyd.
Also, I'd be interested in knowing if Roger would be willing to play 80s/90s Pink Floyd songs (assuming concertgoers wanted to hear any given the lineup). Considering what's happened in Yes, I doubt it.

So you hate Roger, but love the songs that Dave sung, even though Roger wrote them (lyrics and all, as you so graciously put it). I wouldn't say Rog was the only genius behind PF, but he certainly is a large part of the reason they are as big as they are.

every one that was part of pink floyd "WAS" from pink floyd. they officially split with the absence of waters in the mid to late 80's

Yes... Of course but i can't imagine Pink Floyd without the Gilmour's guitare solos. Its impossible. No one plays guitar as i can do it.

Dave was crucial. But by the same token I find the albums without roger unlistenable because he gave so much feeling to the band and it was absent on AMLOR and division bell

I agree except for one album. AMLOR was an amazing non-water album for myself. Specialy for "Yet another movie", "Sorow" and "Terminal frost". Division Bell is a huge deception i think.

Also, i am a big fan of all the Waters solo album but i cannot listen any Gilmour solo album.

if the PInk floyd concets attract so many fans since 1987 it's only because they are so rare and people want to see the magic of the show not the majic of music! i ll prefer see a Waters concert...

No, "Jethro" nickname comes from an historical person (see Wiki).
I've seen Pink Floyd in 1994 in Montréal with 70 000 lazers fans, and i was yawning the whole show. I've seen two big pigs and lazers, but i did'nt see my favorite band. I did'nt see anyone from Pink Floyd.
I much prefer the Radiohead show i've seen few months later in a small theater with 2000 fans and York and Greewood in my face!
Pink Floyd became the "superstores" of music... with no customers services... lol

I see you removed your comment after doing some research :). Pink Floyd were already established and popular before Gilmour joined.

No... I have some problems posting on You Tube. Sometime that doesnt work. But i think Gilmour deserve to be an original member, even if he's not factually, but he brings a new dimension to the band. A dimension that followed Pink until the end.
But Gilmour, for myself, is a guitarist (One of the most) but i hate when he compose song and i hate Division Bell.
