@pencon61 A hillside like that needs the stability that plants provide with their root structure. Without that their could be major damage to the surrounding area if a subsidence occurs. Not to mention the chemical contaminants (fuel) in the soil runoff contaminating other areas and the ground water. But as to your logic; that the area will become overgrown, I ask you: what was the condition of the hill before people started using it as they do now? Overgrown?!
