An honest Republican who didn't treat the Supreme Court like a Republican convention. I might not agree with all his conclusions but I admire his intellectual integrity.
Souter was an old school (R) - nay -republican which America sadly is lacking in these days. Where are the Eisenhowers of today? We get two parties who do the war machine's and lobbies' bidding and throw social issue scraps at their minions.
Bush's biggest mistake was not realizing the recession under his watch. Stimulating the economy, showing the public he cared about it and firing Boskin and Brady eariler then 3 weeks before the 1992 election, are what he should have done.
His worst mistake was his handling of the economy. Souter can always retire but being unattentive towards the US economy is the worse mistake.

As a liberal and especially as a pro choice guy I am proud of George HW Bush for appointing David Souter to the Supreme Court and it'll be sad to see him go. His real mistake though was Clarence Thomas. He is so far right it frightens me!! and his son had his share of Justices that were a mistake. John Roberts and Samuel Alito. I am so dissapointed in Democrats in not filibustering Alito.
AND ANOTHER LIBERAL JUSTICE JOINED THE SUPREME COURT...MORE THAN TWO DECADES AGO. A GREAT DAY.

They viewed Souter as Bush's mistake because he didn't turned out to be as conservative as the Bush administration thought so.
He was a throughly independent person who wouldn't be influence by any other forces.

Even though Thomas is slightly more right wing than Scalia he still doesn't annoy me nearly as much. Man that guy is a PRICK!
I love Souter though what a man! A yankee republican bwahahahahah. Sadly a living fossil.

I wish William H. Rehnquist was still around. I also loved Byron Raymond White, he was a great Justice.
