I spent this past summer on an island in Greece called Hydra. Leonard Cohen resided there...I met the real life Marianne this song was written about. She still visits there each summer, she was and still is - even in her 60s a beautiful Danish women. Any Cohen fan should visit this island...it is amazing.
I love many of Leonard Cohens song. he is one of my favorites artists. He is a great person also and his song came from the heart. Thanks a lot Cohen from all your song :)
what can u say..my brother when he was 13yrs old gave me Leonard (I WAS 11YR), i thought it was a b side of Marianne Fathfull's cassette, or maybe marianne sang it....i dont know...what i remember are the lyrics, need i say anymore!

1992 to now LC still sounds like yesterday the last day of summer to a school on the edge of futures harsh unknowns Kiss hug deeply and damn it remember the warmth still sustain you as the arrows fly give give give it will come back to you......
@BlackFlame619 Your aiding terrorism. I hope you can look yourself in the mirror. Go on do it, Look at the face that literally launched a thousand ships. Cohen is a witch, he shall burn, if not in this world, then the next.
@zosothedestroyer He said "its time we beget what weve begot". Sometimes thinking takes too much time, that why human humanity is partial. Perhaps the darts you sent me went home. What im saying is human life only comes to the ideal as an abstraction, the whole, well, thats another abstraction. I dont not know from what these abstractions are gathered, perhaps its the gathering STORM. Apres la deluge cest moi.
This is an amazing song. I head this way back in the "70s sung by a friend of mine. It has been a favorite since. Lovely word. To zaaritha, my heart goes out to you.n I also lost very young friends to drunk and driving but it does get better.
Just a few weeks ago we had the program Every 15 minutes at my school which shows the dangers of drinking and driving. And random students are chosen as victims, and sadly my girlfriend was chosen as a victim. I was devastated and heart broken, but this song helped me get through that. Only cuz it reminded me of the scene from Pirate Radio when this song was played. Great song, can be used for any occasion especially my hard experience
j'écoutais Leonard Cohen quand j'avais une quinzaine d'années
j'ai toujours eu l'impression que c'était le Léo Ferré de la chanson anglaise mais j'avoue que je n'ai jamais fait d'effort pour en comprendre les paroles
we need to forget the future, today, and return to when music made sense, when it was art and not a franchising trend, when we sang and didnt even know what lip syncing was, amen, thankyou, we all need to stop speaking the names of those today who desacrate what we truly breathe, music.
Interesting insight, but music's always been a 'franchising trend' (I'm not sure if 'franchising' would be the right term, there, but it's not important), at the very LEAST since music could be recorded and sold.
Leonard Cohen's music is by no means a 'mercenary device' (as I'd like to put it), but that doesn't mean music was sacred during his prime...Donny Osmond, the Monkees, Partridge Family, all profit-oriented crap with both eyes set on complete commercialism.
@SupperOfTheMightyOne well this is just one of my many musical interests. im saying specifically the 60's i wanna here about a girl paul mccartneys so in love with, and not a stripper t-ouch wants to sleep with, i wanna here how a rose on the sidewalk inspired jimi hendrix, and not about redmans baddest ''whips''.i guess my message is i want a song to be a song because i can relate to it, not because some rapper needs an extra 30 mil. in his pocket.
@SupperOfTheMightyOne i didnt say they did, your generalizing, i was actualy saying jimi hendrix himself not every 60's artist, your a terrible listener! and the screamy ones are those ones who yell all deep voiced and you cant understand them.
@SupperOfTheMightyOne you did because you said jimi hendrix doesnt represent every artist, i didnt say he did thats how youre representing it to yourself.
@SupperOfTheMightyOne you know what, man, obviously we are not going to agree so why waste are time arguing when we could be loving other things? peace, brother.
i first heard this on pirate radio when carl was depressed because marrianne slept with dr.dave, but i think it would have better suited when the bitch elenore stepped all over simon, this song, him sitting there, would have been beautiful. i love you, chris o'dowd.
Well I think its safe to say that the 60's were a million times better than now. Pisses me off that I sometimes get judged and outcasted because of the music I enjoy and play.. Every youth that loves the 60's music needs to pull together to keep this music alive :'( Better yet you could learn an instrument and create a band I will happily join

I don't usually like my parent's taste in music but my dad turned me onto Leonard Cohen and I think he's fantastic. Reminds me of Nick Cave in some ways - oddly, I discovered Leonard Cohen is one of Nick Cave's biggest influences. Great musicians. I wish there was more music like this today. I'm too young and missed out but I can always go back to the records at least! haha

Jimi Hendrix's lifestyle and beliefs don't represent those of every single rock artist from the '60s, y'know.

I'm too young and missed out but I can always go back to the records at least! haha

This is in the new film "the boat that rocked". Awesome film, with songs from Leonard, the Kinks, the Who, Cat Stevens to name but a few.

This is so beautiful. There's some sort of eternal human sadness in his voice, which is so haunting.
