Sure, go to a gov site to have a bureaucrat who sits all the day long at his desk telling you what to do instead of listening to someone who've been there in person several times saving people's lives.
@gigiontube by all means ask urban search and rescue specialists, you will find they endorse protection of stable solid items over soft items like beds and couches.
@gigiontube this guy is experience in the aftermath and has seen this in countries that hasve poorer building codes than north america. when you look at the desk footage he taped there is enought room to be protected.
But if want to leave yourself open to failing debrie then you go right ahead and stay in the open. as I said before talk to the experts in you local area.
NEVER put yourself UNDER nothing unless you want to be crushed (your head, in this case, would be crushed by that chair when the walls and roof collapsed); you should see the triangle of life videos!
Sounds like a good way to get your head cut off.

the Triangle of life is a myth! DO NOT DO THIS. GO ONLINE TO GOVERNMENT EARTHQUAKE SAFETY SITES AND THEY SAY DO NOT DO IT.

I will NEVER EVER put my head under a chair. This is completely in sane.
However, I will do what this guy says. He's been there, he knows what he is talking about.

nippofilica is right.
a chair will not protect you from a collapsing wall, you will be crushed.
take into account that in an earthquake - everything will be crushed under the falling ceiling.
these is a smarter approach called "the triangle of life" - please search for it.
