  • Holy crap this brings back memories!

  • @megarouge2001 Even though I outgrew watching Woody Woodpecker, I still like it just like I did back in 1986 and b4 1986 when Channel 5 TV here in NYC had Woody Woodpecker running as 1 of their cartoon lineups 4 the morning or afternoon TV programmes.

  • That's the end of Rupert Murdoch's empire regime of Fox Broadcasting Company WNYW 5 and the News Corporation who wanted to hacked with a newspaper The News and the World. And turned back to revived WNEW-TV 5 Metromedia Independent Station with weekday morning cartoons to replace the morning news.

  • Like I said, I wish someone could uplod more pre-1989 Woody Woodpecker promos from WNEW/WNYW/FOX 5 NY on Youtube.com. Most of the ones I see on here are from the 1989 Woody Woodpecker show that was on Fox back then.

  • lol @ 1:11 Saddle-Sore Woody XD

  • I wish someone would upload The Woody Woodpecker opening from WNEW in the '80s that featured a clip from Drooler's Delight.

  • I remember WNEW in the early 80's. I think woody was on at 4 then Popeye? after was What's Happening, Batman, Charlies Angels and more?

  • @loretano Actually, Popeye was on at 2:15, followed by Woody and Bugs for an hour at 2:30. Forget what came on at 3:30, but He-Man was at 4, and then Batman at 4:30. I think Charlie's Angels was on WPIX, I could be wrong, though.

  • @johnissoevil

I'm pretty sure Alvin & the Chipmunks may have been on too. I know it got added to the lineup sometime (maybe later). Thundercats too. Thundercats may have been on at 3:30 since it started in 1985 & was always on channel 5. Silverhawks (also by Rankin-Bass like Thundercats) came on I think in 1987.

I forgot what channel The Real Ghostbusters was on. But I remember watching all those cartoons every day after coming back from school.

  • @wtcvidman Alvin and the Chipmunks reruns started on 5 in 1987. And you may be right about Thundercats. Silverhawks started on 5 in 86. The Real Ghostbusters began in 87, as well.

  • Too bad independent TV channels (in name only) aren't around. They were cool.

  • Wow I remember this. Woody used to come on channel 5 at 2pm I think 'cause I was usually still in school and this kicked off the afternoon cartoon block. I remember I Love Lucy aired around Noon-1ish before the cartoons.

  • I remember that too! That's how I learned to tell time.

  • Woody Woodpecker is the forgotten classic man!...Chilly Willy, aww man, guess who?!!??!hahahah hahahaha hahahahaha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

  • gosh I just brushed a grey hair off my head!

  • 'got any honey?' I remember that, and the commercial at the end. Woody seems to have completely disappeared. Used to watch that show in the afternoons when I got home from school.

  • I can barely remember Woody on Saturday mornings on WNBC during the early '70s, but I do recall this program on WNEW a few years later with great fondness. A true classic that has stood the test of time.

  • I used to watch Woody Woodpecker on WTXF 29.

  • Ok I have a correction! It was Fred Scott who showed the cartoons.I always got their names mixed up ! He also showed a cartoon where there was this little mouse called Percy who was very timid and was always being chased by this cat! Is this Tom Gregorys voice I am hearing ? Someone help me out if they remmember these things!

  • Actually, the hosts of the 1959-65 "Cartoon Playtime" were: "Uncle" Fred Scott, "Uncle" Tom Gregory, "Uncle" Ed Ladd and "Uncle" Fred Hall. Who rotated, one per day, from my understanding. I don't know if Lou Steele ever subbed for any of them - it might explain why, in connection with this show, there was no mention of an "Uncle" Lou Steele (besides, as of 1959 Steele was handling the sign-off shift at Ch. 5).

  • WoW!!No wonder! Look how closely thses names were related!I knew I could not put the volley of names together and the voices together because I was only 4 years old!I do know that I would hear thses guys in later years doing Public Service announcements but could not match the names with the voice! These guys were all Icons! Who was the lady who did Romper Room at lunch time 1962-63?Do you remmeber Carol Corbet from wpix 1966-67?

  • "Do you remmeber Carol Corbet from wpix 1966-67? "

I remember her on "The Patchwork Family" during the Seventies.

  • Oh Yeah !! No one seems to remmeber her.She came on at 12.00 lunch time.Back then we came home for lunch because our city did not have the in school lunch program until 1973.She had her own show and was an artist. She used to show Tuoche Turtle,Wally Gator, and Lippy The Lion Cartoons!! Never forgot her!! WPIX!!

  • I really started watching television in 1969 when I was 3-4 years old, so I don't recall much before that time.

  • "She used to show Tuoche Turtle,Wally Gator, and Lippy The Lion Cartoons!! "

I don't think any of those old cartoons aired in NYC during the '70s or '80s on WPIX, WNEW or WOR, though I believe they may have been on a UHF station during the '70s.

  • Yeah Earl you are right on the money! Her Show was on during 1966-67.I was a 3rd and 4th grader then.I think she was also an accomplished Artist(drawing) which she did on the show!!YES they did air those cartoons on UHF on Channel 47 in the 70s in Spanish!!

  • "YES they did air those cartoons on UHF on Channel 47 in the 70s in Spanish!!"

I could have sworn I saw them on a non-Spanish UHF channel at my friend's house around 1977-78. I believe Three Stooges shorts also aired on this channel (my family didn't get our first TV that had UHF access until a few years later).

  • You may be right. It was probably for a short amount of time. The cartoons you want to see were never on for a long time! I was working then so I probably missed them.

  • "The cartoons you want to see were never on for a long time!"

    True.

  • I most CERTAINLY remember the wonderful Carol Corbett (Two T's, if you please). She showed The Mighty Hercules, one of my favorite cartoons.

  • I can't picture Tom Gregory hosting a kiddie program with that voice. :-)

  • times were a little different back then!! These guys got older also so it really is hard to imagine!!

  • Well, I know I have gotten older myself. :-)

  • WOW! I remember everything in that clip! Down to the indvidual commercials!!! Jeez, thats when TV was TV. I miss those independent channels like 5, 9 and 11! Networks suck! Weekdays rocked from 2 to 5 PM!

  • I am from Westchester County, NY and I remember 1010 WINS and all that!!! Yes it is sad that it's all judge shows instead of cartoons. I guess their demographic changed over time because the last cartoons showed on channel 5 during weekdays was in the late 90s. At one point I thought I was too old for cartoons, and now I miss them like nobody's business. I used to get in trouble for watching TV instead of doing my homework, but it never stopped me! WNEW...miss it..FOX..sigh..network TV..

  • I.I.N.M., it was either March 6 or 7 of 1986 that WNEW-TV changed its calls to WNYW, following the official transfer of ownership to Fox per the FCC.

  • I liked it better when the private stations were independent! Enough of these big companies!! I remmember the change too because my birthday was on the 10th!

  • @1975tooto

Hey, even the independent stations were owned by big companies. Long before Fox, WNEW was owned by Metromedia Television, and even before that, the DuMont Network(which was before I was born).

  • i use to live in paterson, nj as a child in north jersey and remembered channel 5. then later we moved to south jersey. when we had cable we got channel 5 ny, but in 1980 the company took it off and i missed my programs. unless you live in trenton, nj you'll get both new york and philadelphia stations. the only time i got to see channel 5 ny sometimes is to visit my relatives that live in north jersey such as scotch plains, nj.

  • I lived in Paterson also and I know what you mean!

  • I'm glad they posted this. I remember this woody woodpecker opening. It's great hear to Tom Gregory's voice again. Ladd had a great TV voice as well.

I also remember that ad for children's songs with John Jacob song being played. This takes me back.

  • I remmeber Fred Ladd as a kid doing a kids show back in 1963!He showed cartoons(Deputy Dawg)and he was a long time public sevice announcer ,which I NEVER saw his face again! Tom Gregory is a Legend!

  • Back in the 80's, WNEW Channel 5 (We watched this station from PA) would show a commercial for some kind of Summer Camp located somewhere in New York. Does anybody remember this or the name of the camp? I can vaguely remember the commercial showing kids getting off buses.

  • Young People's Day Camp! With that crappy balloon graphic!!! They're still advertising this camp on subways!

  • Do you remember those ads for 4H with the puppets?

  • Hmmm...no..what did the puppets look like? I spent the first 8 years of my life in front of the TV, so I'm sure I saw the ads. It's just a matter of having my memory jogged now that I'm an old coot.

  • Young Peoples Day Camp! I remmeber it and their Slogan was Young Peoples Day Camp , WOW!! Very Good Memories!!

  • I remember young people's day camp also. Didnt the commercial have a yello face talking?

  • Oh!

How I hate that Damn John Jacob..Song!

  • Cool beans! It's a shame that WNEW became a network affiliate rather than remain independent.

  • Yeah, that sucked. Damn FOX!

    I miss independent stations.

  • It's FOX's Main Station, So I Doubt It Will Revert To

    Independent Status.

  • Actually, It Was NOT The First WNEW Became A Network Affilate, As it was a DuMont affiliate And Call Letters Were WABD.

  • I'd like to see the whole commercial for "Children's favorites", since I saw only part of it. Could you please post the "Children's favorites" record commercial in its entirety? I love watching vintage record tv offers from the 1980's.

  • And oddly, I remember the Bear Family too!

  • Can you post the actual cartoons? I haven't seen one since, well 1986. And isn't sad that weekday afternoons are now filled with crapy judge shows instead of classic cartoons?

  • Thanks for posting this nostalgia. I'm from NJ and remember when Channel 5, 9, & 11 was actually worth watching! Any chance you have the opening theme for "The Big Apple Movie" which aired every sunday at 6:00 pm? How about the "Kung-Fu Theatre" intro? I also enjoyed the "Million Dollar Movie" on channel 9 at 1:00 am I believe.

  • Me too! Do you remember "Chiller Thriller" where the hand used to come out of the ground before the horror movies were shown?

  • "Chiller Theater" (w/ the animated hand) was from WPIX Ch. 11, "Creature Features" was from WNEW Ch. 5 (w/the Creep) AND "Fright Night" on WOR Ch. 9. Those were the days.

  • Oh my goodness!!! Ch. 9 used to always show the movie "Dolls" on saturday night. It's a darn shame that stuff don't come on anymore.

  • My Childhood, all over again. I lived in the NY metropolitan area.

  • Same here!

  • Very interesting about Gregory and Ladd. Also of note: Gregory refers to the show as "Woody Woodpecker" and Ladd calls it "The Woody Woodpecker Show." Ch. 5 may have been mixing and matching tapes from different years ...

  • But then, the way Gregory and Ladd signed off Ch. 5 at nights (pre-1980/WTC) differed too. Gregory's last words were "...good night from Channel 5," while Ladd ended with "...good night...and good morning."

  • Interestingly enough, "The Woody Woodpecker Show" became a fixture on WNEW(eventually WNYW) in 1987 when MCA-TV and The Program Exchange made a cartoon series rather than a block of WW cartoons. Hmmmm...

  • A possible answer: The name was "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt," and it was a children's song (it was a promo ad for "Best Loved Children's Songs" or something like that). I believe the announcer on that ad was the late Gene Edwards, famous for his radio ads for the Merchants Bank of New York (long ago swallowed into Valley National Bank) heard overnights on 1010 WINS. And interesting that Tom Gregory did the one bumper and Ed Ladd the other.

  • Actually, the John Jacob song was from a mail order record TV commercial for "Childrens Favorites".

  • Ah, thanks for the clarification. But I stand by my mention of who V/O'd that ad. Other than the album title, I certainly remember the ad.
