@Bruce15485 have to agree with Southland28. i have listened to all the remakes and the original and i honestly believe that Johnny has done it better.
I'm sure John in his prime was the best "Live" performer Australia has ever seen, no other Aussie performer has come close to this performance, he put's everything into it. I'm very fortunate to have lived thru his reign, and having seen him Live in my hometown of Mildura in the eighties at the Bridge Hotel and in the old Cats tent at the Aero Ovals some years later, before he retired "the first time".

He may have done but only in Concert . I think you will find John recorded it in studio in 1980 and it came out on 45 the same year.
BTW Deep Purple did indeed record a slower arrangement of "Help" (believe it or not !!!!) and it's on u tube. It has a very long intro and is a fine rendition.
Okay to answer this query that you guys are wondering about... Of course the song was originally written by the Beatles... Farnham's version or composition was discovered purley by mistake... John loved the Beatles, but could only play the piano with one finger, as he isn't a pianist... he started playing this song and loved the slowness of it, and because he is known for his big ballads, decided to get the band in and work on that composition, which is the composition you hear of John's today..
In regards to the Deep Purple version, while their version is slower, it still has the feel of the fast version of the Beatles, just less rockier, plus John's version doesn't have all the original lyrics in it, while Deep Purples pretty much does, and even with some ad-libbing at the end... But as for the vocal comparism, well there just isn't one... Farnham completely wins hands down, and belts it out like no-one else can. Especially in the bridge...
Songs are and have always been personal interpretation... Personally I think Farnham's version is the best interpretation of this song's lyrics... as the song's lyric nature is not a party version like the Beatles have done it... Whereas John's vocal slower big ballad is a perfect interpretation of this person reaching out for help. At the end of the day, regardless of whether you like my opinion or not, what really matters is that songs are personal interpretations... Each to their own...
I am also a big beatles fan but have to say that im sure they wrote this for farnham
outstanding performance with fantastic vocals gives me shivers when i listen to it and am sure that the beatles would be proud to hear him sing his version of their song. Always wondered if they ever heard it?
Goose bumps hit at about 4:00 when it goes the massive light burst and then silence after 'help' but i much prefer his version over the Beatles... Farnsie is a brilliant singer, and most importantly a brilliant performer...

I don't think so.
It was first recorded in 1965 presumably by John Lennon . Farnham's was 1980. It's unlikely JL
was aware of this. He died in December that year.
Rumour has it DEEP PURPLE recorded "Help" in 1969 also in a slower arrangement but I have not been able to find it. Can anyone confirm this.

I think you'll find John Farnham first started singing this in the 70s...
