One reason I can definitely point out that creates this stark contrast in living conditions is that most developed countries offer tax breaks to people who donate to charity. I'm not sure how many countries in Africa do this but I'm sure it is next to none.

2 African countries: Botswana & CAR - both are landlocked, desert nations with large amounts of natural resources. Both were dirt poor in the past. CAR remains amongst the poorest in the world, while Botswana is one of only 2 sub-saharan Afr. nations considered in upper 1/2 of middle ranking nations (a relatively good position). Why? Principally, good govt, with an incorrupt system of bureaucratic and admn checks and balances on abuses of power. This could be CAR as well!

There is an old saying: Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for life. Stopping throwing money at these African nations, it's wasted. The poor do not get it anyways. Instead, teach them to grow food, once they are taught, they can live or die by thier own design. I feel no more sympathy for people that reproduce when they shouldn't.

i think i get where you're coming from i guess... once colonialism ended in most of these countries, the problems began. many of the post colonial leaders (and now too) came from very humble backgrounds and then all of a sudden they were exposed modernized conveniences. wanting to hold on to that, they corrupted everything and did this to their people.

They only people who were swing through the trees were the people there, not Europeans. Everybody that has come from Africa in recent centuries would not have the lives they have today.

It was the breakthrough of the Europeans that moved Africa out of its old fashoned way of life, with ignorance and discrimination.
