Also I remember they went back to WLIR after a few years of WDRE...memory not that good anymore the late 80's Miami Vice was all the rage and we supported Columbia's gross import..
The Screamer Of The Week (I still have the complete list LIR sent me in 1988!) - John DelBello in teh morning (before he went to Philadelphia) the many live shows the did on Tuesday nights from My Father's Place, Ralph Newman, the News Blimp (solenoid... you will next hear the News Blimp at ...) It is indeed sad that this had to end, especially as it did.
WOW. I had this exact moment on a Maxell audio tape for years and it snapped in my tape player. I still have it somewhere... it just needs to be spliced. Anyway, AWESOME. I literally cried when WLIR went off the air. Best radio station in the history of radio, as far as I'm concerned!
What a great station... Ben Manilla, Willobee - gosh the contests, the concerts - what a great station that really connected with their listeners! MISS this station!
Larry the Duck, Donna Donna, Fujiyama Mama, The Smiths, REM, the Replacements - Do You Dare? I still Miss this station - the best format, best jocks, best station EVER!!!
Yeah, but they lied to us. I remember EVERYONE being bummed out over this that night. Damn near suicidal. Then very next morning you tuned in to 92.7 just to see what was on there...and it was WDRE, same format as LIR. Happy again.
I'm pretty sure it was a Friday night when 'LIR went off the air. My ex wife gave me the boot 1 month before and then this. Dark days indeed - and although WDRE tried to be like 'LIR I think music was changing - although they played "alternative" it morphed into a different sound by 1990. The hey day of WLIR was 1981 -'84.
I know, I totally misted up when I heard the beginning of My Way, haha! I was so devastated. I think I remember tuning in shortly after they went off the air and was possibly receiving a spanish station. I don't know how long that went on... I was pretty much a kid at the time so it's kind of hazy.
it's weird hearing Donna Donna on WBAB playing that format..

WLIR also played cutting edge dance music that commercial radio wouldn't touch. That's what I love about WLIR

I had the WLIR bumper sticker on my car during high school in the 80's. Now that was a great radio station. I want to be Forever Young....

Wow, this was a big moment during my aolescence! The station switched call letters, but was never really the same.
Never could you recreate great alternative music with a witty, intelligent and daring radio station again! R.I.P. WLIR.
P.S. Great to see my favorite all time DJ- Donna Donna in this clip. Thanks to whoever posted this.
