Being a manly man I cannot tell you how much this scene got to me. I was already sold on the show at this point but I was bawling and I'm not ashamed ot admit it. And repeat viewings of does nothing to help I'm still crying every time. A mix of SMG's brilliant acting and Joss Whedon's brilliant writing means that nothing this wonderful will come to tv again and that makes me wanna cry more then this scene.

it is such an intense, emotional scene, - sarah is such an incredibly emotional actress, it makes it that much more intense, combined with david and tony head, the three of them being simply the best actors on the show at the time, and it made for an awesome scene, that could have come off a bit cheesy with lesser actors, but yet worked, and worked perfect....definitely showed the shows potential at a relatively early stage.

These moments of vulnerability are always really interesting though. I mean, I love Buffy, she's my hero, my feminist idol, and although I don't exactly want to be her, I'd love to have some of her 'don't mess with me' attitude, but scenes like this add another layer to her character, and remind us that she's just a child.

I love how here she's crying and wants to quit. 5 minutes Willow is devastated about what just happened and Buffy knows what she has to do and has the strength to do it. Such brilliant acting and directing.

When one looks back all the way back to the starting seasons and compares that buffy to season 6-7 buffy, it becomes clear that she is one of the most developed and dynamic characters ever created. S3 Buffy would be cynical about this, S4 would go into catatonic state, S5 Buffy would sacrifice herself if it meant saving others, S6Buffy would probably be happy in this situation, while S7 Buffy would be totally indifferent to it, as long as the outcome is something she wants or expects.
