I remember seeing this for the first time...I wanted it to have it so bad, that I dreamed about it. Thanks to that I learned about linux, unix and a bunch of other stuff that I woudn't have if I sticked with windows.

@Dustindarninvalid That dock is Kiba-Dock back when it had a functional physics engine. Though it was an excellent dock, development on it ceased and hence has been surpassed in terms of actual functionality (not to mention stability). IMO the best dock around currently is Cairo-Dock.
@Dustindarninvalid There's guides on Ubuntu forums for how to compile older releases (which include a functional Akamaru physics engine) from source along with possibly a few precompiled deb packages. Note though that enabling Akamaru may lower dock stability and because you are running older builds, other useful features may not be present in the releases.
I know, that's why I'm staying away. I dislike running abandoned software on my machine. By the way, I'm not running any debian based distros, I triple boot gentoo, slack and BackTrack.

Though I thought the implementation of a physics engine was nice in concept, it could be a nuisance at times and I personally never saw much benefit from it.

Hey G37, he sent me a private message CHALLENGING me to find a better price than his 27" iMac that cost him $2700 bucks!
I told him that yesterday someone else challenged me to do the same thing, and I was able to build a system with exactly the same parts for $687 bucks, plus a Samsung 305T 30" monitor with 2560x1600 resolution (trumping the Mac) for about 1200 bucks! The whole thing came to $1886!

Microsoft and MAC have what we call fixed/locked "shell". (the shell, is what you see and communicate with through KeyBoard/ Mouse/ .. .
The total difference with Linux OS is that is personalizable. So you're right, Linux users can have even more visual stuff, but 99,9999% of Linux users don't.
Until you can prove that people are more efficient working in these visual-enhanced OS'es than standard XP, these visual wonders are a waste of time and money. But it looks nice.
@benanderson88 also, this is completely optional. you have to install and enable Compiz (Beryl) to get all these effects. things like this and Aero add to the experience of using the operating system whereas most things in the Mac UI just take away from the use and functionality.
@benanderson88 that's because most of the Mac UI takes away from regular functionality. in windows, if your computer can't run Aero, you can turn it off. in Mac, if you're using an underpowered machine, it lags like hell and all you're left with is a hunk of metal that won't even load facebook. i speak from experience on this one.
He's probably running a modified release of Beryl in which the Magic Lamp effect may be set to 0 "curves" (or whatever they are called). Compiz doesn't permit this by default since Apple has patented that visual.

hey, i know that at 0:53 is a magic lamp effect. But do you adjust the wave? could you give me the setting? i mean how much intensity do you put in the range?
Because Apple patented the Genie effect, Compiz by default is shipped requiring atleast 1 "minimum wave" in the Magic Lamp effect. If you really want the effect though, all you have to do is change the minimum value of waves from "1" to a "0" in the Minimize plugin's source code and recompile.

Beryl was a fork of the original Compiz project and eventually re-merged (with parts of it) forming "Compiz Fusion". The Compiz and Compiz-Fusion projects recently merged and is now known simply as "Compiz".
Not really. Compiz consumed ~70.0MB of 1GB when I maxed it out and didn't seem to hog any other resources when idle. Most basic animations have insignificant effect on the CPU as using other window managers (e.g. Metacity) typically ended up consuming near the same amount of resources (though less RAM) and provided far less functionality (zoom, live previews, window transparency/brightness/saturation control, etc).
If you do not need them then do not enable them. Many that contain eye candy provide functionality as well (e.g. cube and paint fire on screen). Others like "Rain" are entirely useless unless you are trying to stress test your GPU XD.

As for hooking up my computer to a 19" screen.....I own a 62" Plasma HDTV there son!! Try hooking your MAC into that! It doesn't even have an HDMI port because Apple is too stupid to have included something like that on the machine!

mini DVI can do sound threw an hdmi hookup. All minidvi does is make less ports on the computer.

No, you're NOT fucked! It's called "moving ahead!" I would NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER buy a monitor with a VGA connection, because every single one of them is HDMI or DVI nowadays!
So unless you're using a 10 year CRT monitor, you don't need VGA! You use HDMI! If you need to interface with DVI, you buy a DVI adapter.
It STILL doesn't change the fact that HDMI has replaced......literally......everything, and is now the premium defacto standard for anything HD-related.

Seeing as how most video cards come with either TWO DVI ports or TWO HDMI ports, it doesn't really limit anything!
Seeing as how practically ALL Win-based laptops come with an HDMI port, dual-linking two monitors together is a synch either for desktops or laptops.
Oh, and really good 23" monitors with 5ms response time and 1920x1200 resolution start at around $149 bucks, so price is not an option unless you're deadpan poor.

In the last three days I've had 1 Macboy tell me that HDMI doesn't support broadband internet (hahahaha!!), another has told me that the least powerful Mac will beat the most powerful PC (despite the 8-core Mac Pro being unable to hit 30 FPS on Call of Duty 4 at 1680x1050), and another has told me that the reason the 17" Macbook costs $1500 more than a Win7 laptop of equal hardware is because of the ALUMINUM CASE!!

Microsoft and MAC have what we call fixed/locked "shell". (the shell, is what you see and communicate with through KeyBoard/ Mouse/ .. .
The total difference with Linux OS is that is personalizable. So you're right, Linux users can have even more visual stuff, but 99,9999% of Linux users don't.
Until you can prove that people are more efficient working in these visual-enhanced OS'es than standard XP, these visual wonders are a waste of time and money. But it looks nice.

@benanderson88 also, this is completely optional. you have to install and enable Compiz (Beryl) to get all these effects. things like this and Aero add to the experience of using the operating system whereas most things in the Mac UI just take away from the use and functionality.

He's probably running a modified release of Beryl in which the Magic Lamp effect may be set to 0 "curves" (or whatever they are called). Compiz doesn't permit this by default since Apple has patented that visual.

Why would you want to install Beryl when Compiz Fusion is already pre-installed? You may have Metacity enabled right now.
To enable Compiz:
System -> Preferences -> Appearances -> Effects (enable restricted drivers if prompted).
Install CompizConfig Settings Manager (CCSM) to configure it.
That said, if you think Ubuntu is horrible, I wouldn't suggest using it just for a window manager though I don't discourage you from trying it out....

Because Apple patented the Genie effect, Compiz by default is shipped requiring atleast 1 "minimum wave" in the Magic Lamp effect. If you really want the effect though, all you have to do is change the minimum value of waves from "1" to a "0" in the Minimize plugin's source code and recompile.

Beryl was a fork of the original Compiz project and eventually re-merged (with parts of it) forming "Compiz Fusion". The Compiz and Compiz-Fusion projects recently merged and is now known simply as "Compiz".

Not really. Compiz consumed ~70.0MB of 1GB when I maxed it out and didn't seem to hog any other resources when idle. Most basic animations have insignificant effect on the CPU as using other window managers (e.g. Metacity) typically ended up consuming near the same amount of resources (though less RAM) and provided far less functionality (zoom, live previews, window transparency/brightness/saturation control, etc).

If you do not need them then do not enable them. Many that contain eye candy provide functionality as well (e.g. cube and paint fire on screen). Others like "Rain" are entirely useless unless you are trying to stress test your GPU XD.

Make sure you select to boot from the CD when booting up. Your computers' BIOS might not auto-load CDs on boot up.

Ubuntu cd will run on any computer, ive installed it on countles laptops, desktops etc. If your BIOS isn`t set to boot from CD first it wont start, and neither will windows
