  • @Vanketu @youcantspeak @SmileyBlob You're making me feel uncomfortable. ;(

  • @MareksGregs Seriously, are you trolling?

  • @youcantspeak Nooo. I'm just saying that's a goof.

  • Aliens

  • 0:30 - She opens it with Right hand, but in mirror she's using her left hand! GOOF

  • @MareksGregs Please be joking

  • @oskararnarson Why would I be? Just look for yourself.

  • @MareksGregs Please be joking

  • @MareksGregs Please be joking

  • @MareksGregs You are a special person....

  • they filmed her terrible running form, and then filmed the same scene but in the mirror's reflection of the hallway. then put the two together, thats how they got such a great scene.

  • @SocalBreakfast but the scene is uncutted from the firts moment, downstairs, to the last...

  • The mirror is neither fixed on the wall nor is it directly perpendicular to either the camera or the actress. It's instead shot at an angle so it appears as if she's running directly at the mirror, when in fact she's running directly at the reflection of the camera IN the mirror, while the mirror-camera rig is leading her up the stairs and down the hall.

  • Now that is some great cinematography! Too bad the movie wasn't all that great.

  • freeze at 30s, not the same hand.

the mirror is a tv or green screen, the hand that open the door have more like orange sleeve than the other hand

  • @salam3026 nice one

  • mind fucking o_O

  • fuck yeah, cinematography

  • You can see the image morphing into a "reflection" at 0:26

This is two different shots. One in front of her, running, and one over the shoulder as she opens the cabinet. The image has been inserted in place of the originale reflection in the OTS shot, and altered to look like a mirror reflection

  • it's vampire cam))

  • Actually, you could do this shot with no green screens if you filmed the whole shot through the mirror and simply moved the cabinet with the camera. When she reaches for the cabinet, the camera could zoom or dolly out to reveal the mirror.

  • @Lagomen

wouldn't the mirror reflect the camera ?

  • kinda the whole point of the vid.

  • Freeze it at 0:29 just as her hand reaches for the knob. Note the position of the hand - it's different in the reflection in the mirror, her index finger is very bent, but the other image shows it more straight.

  • At around :22 she almost moves back a tiny bit while running. Makes me believe that that is when they started filming using the reflection and just pieced the clip together. Definitely trippy non the less.

  • The mirror was a blue screen and then they flipped the shot in post production. They have used the same type of shot in the film "Strange Days" and "Inception". Here is Zemeckis talking about it:

    watch?v=FTlGS31-uAs&feature=related

  • does anybody have the making of?

  • @thechristophersean watch?v=FTlGS31-uAs&feature=related

  • @IrishLincoln thanks man

  • angle

  • Always loved the movie - never noticed the camera trick.

  • U can run, but u can't hide . Sign : Pedobear

  • actually I think it's an insert shot with the mirror greened out and the picture of the girl running down the hall plugged in. very nicely done!

  • 35 ppl gave up!

  • This is one incredible piece of filmmaking.

  • i doubt the mirror is really reflecting anything, 2 shots, one inside the other, her hand is not in sync when she reaches for the handle on the cabinet.

  • Actually, It's a morph of two shots blended perfectly together.

  • Robert Zemeckis talks about this tricky mirror shot: watch?v=FTlGS31-uAs

  • It's called digitally removing the camera?

  • its a small green screen, they'll do the shoot twice and just match them up. its not fucking rocket science

  • this one is easy, the mirror isn't a mirror at all, its a blue screen. The scene with her running was shot prior and then added to the scene where she opens the mirror, the orange sleeve in the opening scene gives it away

  • the camera is in the same spot slowly zooming out as she comes closer and then revealing its a mirror the camera wasn't moving its facing the mirror the whole time (except when she was running up the stairs that was probably a different shot)

  • Reddit brought me here

  • @toosleepytowakeup Why do you feel the need to announce that? No-one cares.

  • Your questions have been answered:

search "contact. the impossible shot. robert zemeckes"

  • You can see in the "mirrored" image that she continues reaching (her hand is JUST grabbing while the "real" one is opening) while the "non-mirrored" image is opening the door. Therefore, the tracking shot of her running ends with her entering the bathroom and reaching just near the camera (no bathroom has a sink/cabinet straight ahead from the door). A separate shot is of the door being opened (probably with a green screen on the front of the door, I can almost make out the glow on her sleeve).

  • Awesome upload. You guys are so fucking good at finding cool shit. Thanks man!

  • 0:31 Hair is loose on the non mirrored image but flat on the mirrored image. I am just surprised they messed the sleeves up like that 0_o

  • MINDFUCK

  • Watching this movie was like being pinball machined.

  • she was running backwards

  • Girl was filmed then molded into a mirror shot.

    Fucked if I know tbh.

  • I would guess there are just several invisible cuts during the slo-mo bit - especially when the camera jogs up cutting off part of her head.

  • I'm betting the camera was pointed into the mirror the entire time....as proof I raise you spatial distortion using a zoom lense... while zoomed in, the background appears to be the same size as the subject. At wide angles, the background tends to look smaller, compared to an up-close subject. So, for visual confirmation, watch as she crests the stairs, and approaches the cabinet, that the hallway appears longer, and longer.

  • MIND BLOWN AND MIND FUCKED PUT TOGETHER

  • A powerful wizard cast a spell.

  • The camera was tracking because its a continuous shot, includes the turn at the top of the stairs, so I think that both the mirror and the camera were tracking. Most of the tracking shot the camera was near the floor and the mirror was tilted forward at the top to make it appear straight on to the girl. As she reaches the mirror we see (not in the reflection but on her, almost the back of her head.So at the close approach to mirror pont the camera pulls back and up and to the viewers left.

  • @ersatzar -- You're looking at her sleeve as she is running, before the reach shot with the orange sleeve. Just after that, though, as she is reaching....the reflection has no orange shirt at all, it is black. It is two shootings with one place on a green-screened square made to give it a mirror effect.

  • Mind = Blown

  • Magnets... How do they work?

  • fuckin magnets...

  • Panic room 2.0, we need some fucking meds!!!! My daughter/husband has dia-beeeetus

  • Industrial Light and Magic

  • Brilliant camera work!

  • this was really incredible... i'm really amazed... actually if i saw it in the film itself i wouldn't even notice... but i'm actually really impressed

  • 0:31 the medicine in the farthest left moves O.O

  • Nope chuck testa

  • It was just a fucking blue screen! son of a bitch.

  • Just to let you all know...daddy dies.

  • @ACMusic01 BULLSHIT!! Hes an alien.

  • Comment removed

  • you must get payed a fair amount for being able to run backwards up stairs whilst filming

  • @thebobjones333

While stedicam ops do get paid a fair amount of money, they don't actually run backwards. They point the camera backwards and watch the footage through a monitor while filming.

  • @thereisnofive I believe the refer to this configuration as Don Juan-ing, as they are set up like a tango dance.

  • Haha she runs like a little girl !

  • mind=blown

  • 2 shots to make this happen ;)

  • Smart editing, looks like they blended 2 shots

  • they just match the scenes up

  • She was probably jogging on the spot.

  • this movie was fucking brilliant. I hate it when people dis it.

  • it's an app

  • Keanu: What if it was zoomed into the mirror the whole time...

  • Wiw mindfuck

  • The first time I watched this I was like "Whats weird about this" The second time I was like "Holy crap!"

  • Directed by M Knight Shaymalan

  • @DR000 What a tweest

  • She was jogging on the spot

  • Pause it at 0:29 - Black sleeve vs orange sleeve.

  • @grannywhereyaat I think it's CGI

  • @Fawwal717 Yes It is, at 0:30 the door pictured in the mirror moves unrealistically.

  • @grannywhereyaat all i see is an orange undershirt with a black jacket pulled back

  • @grannywhereyaat Also, look how far her thumb is from her index finger in the mirror, compared to the first-person view.

  • @grannywhereyaat Yellow is inside the coat, orange is the sweater she's wearing but it still does not show in the mirror as it comes out of the coat's sleeve when she reaches for the knob.

  • @grannywhereyaat Yellow inner lining of black coat and orange sweater sleeve. No tricks here.

  • @grannywhereyaat The orange sleeve is her sweater, not her jacket.

  • @grannywhereyaat orange sleeve is her shirt under the coat...does not show until she stretches out her hand

  • @grannywhereyaat

She's actually wearing an orange sweater underneath the coat, which has a yellow inner lining. If you look carefully you can see the orange sweater at 0:30 - 0:31, as well as the sweater itself at the opening of the video. It's not a slip up.

  • @Kawmun Hes referring to the fact that her sleeve is black in the mirrors "reflection", you knob.

  • @grannywhereyaat Also finger position. Same :29 in the mirror her pointer finger is curled more than the hand reaching for the knob

  • I DON'T KNOW THEREFORE ALIENS

  • @soundbeans therefore ur mum

  • @soundbeans no jesus

  • i got one simple explanation...ALIENS

  • The Wadsworth constant applies.

  • she runs like a pussy

  • Fuck the mirror. How do I keep up to date with all new offers in Dubai?

  • @TurkBack2 you can check the 800mag.com

soon it will have daily deal page with offers upto 70% , you will love it

  • Woah.

  • Just clever compositing. Hand coming from off screen is an entirely different shot. The footage of her running up the stairs, down the hall and reaching up to the mirror handle was "framed" into the mirror which creates a very nice illusion. However, if you watch the hand reach up to the mirror very carefully you can see that they don't quite match up.

  • Fake

  • oooh shit that is NIIICE

  • The Scene was definitely shot separately and digitally fixed on to the mirror. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to see the wall of the hallway behind the trim on the door.

  • Pretty simple. The camera isn't facing the mirror directly, but at an angle. So that's why you don't see it.

  • @jon00769 Really? Not seeing the camera in the mirror is the only strange thing you saw in this scene?

  • @jon00769 They also had to "paint out" the shoulder of the camera guy. It was explained in the commentary in the top comment.

  • @jon00769 LOL yeah thats not the issue. it's that the camera doesn't cut away

  • @sausagenmuff Oh well that's pretty obvious. Notice the buttons on her shirt at the beginning are on her left side. When it cuts to the part where shes running up the stairs they are on her right. So this entire shot is done off the mirror. What's messing with your heads is thinking the mirror in the bathroom is a fixed object on the wall.

  • WHAT.

  • That was a really clever trick!

  • what movie is this?

  • @HypN0tIz3DmlNdZ Are you fucking kidding me? Do you think the first word in the title may have something to do with it?

  • FUCK someone mention Reddit so I can reply with 'so brave.'

  • @greggersification so brave

  • @greggersification ...so brave...

  • ..... mind = blown

  • The cameraman was obviously a vampire but haven't figured out the camera.

  • @n0c0n yeah the camera mans a vampire and the camera was covered by harry potters invisibility cloak thingy

  • One of the best movies ever

  • did he died?

  • the camera and mirror are actually moving with her, thats why you dont see anything other than the medicine cabinet. the camera is slightly askew which is why you see the cabinet from the left side.

  • @TheR88R no it wasnt

  • This video explains it:

    Director Commentary...

    /watch?v=FTlGS31-uAs&feature=related

  • the both shots are different besides her fingers, the Over the shoulder shot she is comfortably open the door where as in the reflection she's actually streching, look at her head position!

  • mabe the camera is in her coat, or she has special contax, either that or the camera is of the the side and its pointed in just the right angel

  • @wheelycool776 special contacts, this isn't 2100

  • @Boo28706 lol

  • @Boo28706 im just throwing out some ideas, and you arent in the SIA or the IRS or anything that does wierd stuff like invent cool tecnallogy, so how would you now?

  • @wheelycool776 Because the Internal Revenue Service is the forerunner in technological innovation and invention. Oh no, wait, they just collect taxes. And the SIA isn't even a thing.

  • @dunn412 i meant to type CIA

  • The fingers aren't an exact reflection. They have separate positions.

  • @rustyglock212 actually makes it kind of mystical and freaky. Like the reflection isn't exactly her or something.

  • Hey! Pretty Amazing! I never noticed that! I was so amazed by The Opening Pull Back and the Device Destruction that I didn't notice this "simple" shot. Kewl Beanz!

-This girl, btw, plays Rocket in SuckerPunch - a different movie with hot babes and action but I mention it because it too has weird wonderful camera shots. Scenes going from a stage to real life to a dream and slo-mo and all kinds of goofy fun things. Check it out!

  • The mirror was replaced with green screen, after shoot a girl sceen they flip the shot and replace it on green screen (the mirror) as you can maybe see the movement of the hand done not mach.

  • there's another great mirror shot in the movie Mr Nobody.

  • green mirror?

  • How this was actually done:

This whole shot is actually made with VFX. The whole bathroom shot, including the mirror were created by an effects artist. During the time of shooting, the girl was blue screened into the foreground and the rest of the elements were created and added in post.

  • It's quite simple. Shoot regular footage and super impose it onto a surface, which is the mirror in this instance.

  • It isnt that hard if you really think bout it

  • whoa that blew my mind!!!

  • HOLY SHIT!!!!!!

  • found the answer! :P /watch?v=FTlGS31-uAs&feature=related

  • The image in the mirror isn't a reflection of the girl reaching for the medicine cabinet. If you pause at 0:30, you'll notice that the actor reaching towards the cabinet has the red sweater sleeve around her wrist, and the mirror doesnt. The scene of running up the stairs and opening the cabinet were filmed at different times. They got a stand-in to open the cabinet, that way it would LOOK like shes a reflection, but really they just made a greenscreen look like a mirror, then inserted the video.

  • @ChristianVido You're very correct sir. You can tell this more by pausing the clip anywhere between 0:29 and 0:32 and you will see aliasing on the arm of the stand-in and a touch of green spill. Due to how fast the shot it moving, you wouldn't notice while watching. But paused... it's very obvious.

  • I have no idea how they did this... it's amazing!!! and out of my understanding...

  • i think they just stood in front of the mirror and filmed her running down the hall. As she ran closer to the bathroom they zoomed out at the perfect speed and once she approached the mirror they moved out of the way.

  • @hzuhairy Yeah but if they just filmed the mirror, how did they get her running up the stairs? There's not cut in the shot.

  • @djBiacco Good point. They probably cut it where she slows down...

  • Has anyone else noticed that the 'real' sleeve shows an orange jumper sticking out past the coat sleeve, but in the reflection, its not there...or there is something but its definitely not orange! This gives it away quite a bit if you watch it on loop.

  • I saw this movie a gazzilion times, and i just noticed it. GREAT !

  • to me it's looking like a green screen over the mirror. the reflections don't exactly match up with her hands and fingers if you look closesly. The shot was filmed from the front, running, and edited onto the green screen on the mirror. The end of the scene was filmed again over her shoulder to merge the shots together. That's as simple as I can make it.

  • Easy its a mirror with a green screen...shoot the scene running up the stairs and composite the whole scene within the green screen mirror. 2nd shot when she gets to the mirror you dolly back about a foot and the girl opens the mirror and grabs the medicine just match up.

  • great,...

  • it is a composite of two shots using CGI to merge them. When she runs down the hallway she slows down considerably for two seconds, that where the two different shots were merged. After that moment, the second shot takes over all the way until she opens the medicine cabinet, then they just timed her hand open the cabinet until it matched the speed and timing of her hand from the second shot, but you cannot tell they are different shots (her hand in the mirror and the one on the left). Easy.

  • a shift camera/lens will do the trick, it's nothing really fancy - the camera is just above the girl sliding on a rail on ceiling floor. as you can see, there's no ceiling appear in that scene at all

  • I think they shoot two scenes.

First the clip she´s walking up the stairs.

The camera is moving just in front of her.

In the second scene they shoot her open

the locker. But there isn´t any mirror but a blue or green screen matte.

The first sequence is just overlayed on the second greenscreen matte.

Then you will have such video scene!!!
