I am yet to see a video of it vertically taking off and transitioning to normal flight. Is that possible with the F-35 or can you only take off normally with the help of the downward thrust (hence STOVL)?
@sewarforlife the F-35C can land on a carrier, its just that prototypes are having some tail hook problems, but these are only teething problems because of the new airframe, these should be fixed soon.
excuse me, I want to ask why the lid for the lift fan opens forward like that, because I saw older videos showing that the f-35b had lift fans covers opening like --> |\_↓_/| If you're facing the front of the plane. Is this the new type? Or are there 2 different versions? Or is one better than the other for some odd reason, because I like the other type better :'(
@justgetmeaname Yeah, I liked it better when they opened the old way to. The reason they changed it is because they were not getting the airflow they needed into the liftt fan, and this design change is the fix. This allows more air to to get sucked it and also helps with some heating issuies.
the F-35 is just a means of getting munitions close to a target. you no longer have to fly over the target to bomb it. the same can be said for air-to-air combat, you no longer have to be pointing your nose at an enemy aircraft. just look, lock and shoot.
@Blazestalker100 Its not that easy. the f-35 has a helmet mounted HUD and 360 degrees coverage. Which means an F-35 can send a highly maneuverable and still very good sukhoi crashing to the ground since the F-35 does not have to have its nose on you to fire an AIM-9X. Also its not all about technology. A highly skilled pilot could pretty much take an F-4 and tango with an SU-27. Read before you bash and please make sure your sources are good and not from some fan site. Have a great day :).
@jedijaffy56 The F-35 does not have 360° radar tracking capability. It is limited to 120° just like the Su-27. It does however use AESA radar instead of PESA, giving it much better range and targeting ability. One of the benefits of pitting modern tech vs 30 yro designs I suppose.
What we need to be watching out for is the Su-35. It has a modern AESA radar capable of detecting low RCS(.01 M^2) objects out to 400km, an targeting them out to 90km

It's nothing like it. The only thing that is similar is one piece of the lift fan. The versions of the F35 that don't have STOVL capability have NOTHING in common with the Yak.

@martijnvkk If your talking about it being the f-35B there is multiple variations. The plane you were looking at was Short Take off and Vertical Landing. Some of the other variations have no vertical landing or takeoff capabilities. Different branches of service get different variations of this plane.

Oh, just read that the UK is thinking of getting the F-35C variant. I read the reasons. Good reasons. Very cool, but the problem is there are huge costs with the late decision because they have to redesign the HMS Queen Elizabeth for catapults and trapping wires now after work had already been done in its design and building.The C variant is a good choice though. It will take UK back to its roots as they invented the steam catapult originally.

@shermanlee85856 With VTOL you can carry effectively no ordanence and use up most fuel.
With STOVL it alows you to carry enough arms and fuel to do more than look cool.

Not pretty package on the outside, but full of surprises. I haven't seen/read/heard anything about it's maneuverability. If it's taking the place of F-16, AV-8, and the Hornet "C", then it has some really big shoes to fill.

The F-16, AV-8 and Hornet "C" 10 each so that's 30 aircrafts cannot take down a single F-35 fighter jet. And that's just the beginning. F-16 is a soft squishy newborn baby compared to F-35. F-35 is like a 1,000,000 pound bodybuilder holding two semi-automatic machine guns. Unfortunately the alien spacecraft that visited earth 1000 years ago can wipe out 100 F-35's without lifting a finger.

@martijnvkk If your talking about it being the f-35B there is multiple variations. The plane you were looking at was Short Take off and Vertical Landing. Some of the other variations have no vertical landing or takeoff capabilities. Different branches of service get different variations of this plane.

Oh, just read that the UK is thinking of getting the F-35C variant. I read the reasons. Good reasons. Very cool, but the problem is there are huge costs with the late decision because they have to redesign the HMS Queen Elizabeth for catapults and trapping wires now after work had already been done in its design and building.The C variant is a good choice though. It will take UK back to its roots as they invented the steam catapult originally.

@kirbyroxy mee-oww wiki's good for checking numbnut, - but simple fact, Sydney Camm's hurricane won the BoB, his Tempest was up there with the best ww2 fighters, and he had a hand in the Harrier- he was running hawker at the time, I KNOW when the GR5's were built - that's a US-UK project, (slower - but more range & load) If you got a real argument - back it up, "my grandad"/"my dad"/"my best friend's friend's cousin's uncle" is something you should have left in the school yard.

@aarrmmeenndd100 If you knew the answer to that question, then you would most likely be one of the men designing and building these. I'm pretty sure they are better than the F-22 Raptor, but they don't tell EVERY detail as to why they are better. They prefer to keep some things secret.

F-22's cannot communicate,it has stealth defects & the USAF has released a video of an F-22 crashing because it was rained on is what they claim. The F-22 is a waste of money,and a fail. The F-35 doesn't have as many issues,and can detect aircraft long before they see it,and it is invisible to radar like the F-22.
