exacly thats what happened when me and a friend broke itno one fucking dubass pelleted the shit out of it and lit a fucking lighter that dumbass friend of mine but RIP
it didnt explode, it was on fire and the mineral oil or whatever is inside the transformer to protect it leaved out and thats the spay you see everywhere. then it caught fire and the bang you hear is the breaker tripping, cutting the power.
this event occurred at the Ives Dairy Substation located near San Simeon Way and Biscayne Boulevard in Miami, Florida. It is believed to have occurred in 2000 or 2001
I used to work for Schweitzer Engineering Lab. If they would have had Schweitzer's products in there, this wouldn't have happened. We watched this video at a meeting one time, and this is a substation's nightmare.
Well people wonder what caused this. many sub-stations have tremendous amounts of power running through them, upwards into 450kV, most transformers are oil filled and under pressure so obviously shorts at such high voltage can cause heat and explosions like such :) This explosion is quite small compared to some i've seen in the field taking out at least equivelent to a football field or two in damage. This guy was very lucky it was a small station, or he'd be screwed
i guess the explosion happens by the combustion of the oil inside the circuit breakers, it is there to prevent the electric sparks but at that high temperatures it becames fuel.
If you read some earlier comments, it is not water you are seeing, it is pressurized coolant oil coming from the ruptured tranformer, that is why it bursts into flames right after you see it spewing from the building
and, I forgot to add since you were bashing the citizens of my county, what is it with you austalians, thinking water bursts into flames like that? :)
The excessive current draw overheated the transformer and caused the oil inside to heat up and spray out through the vents then catch fire upon hitting the arc. The flames then short out the high voltage side and blows the expulsion fuse (purple flash and bang)However, the transformer tank bursts shortly after and spills the burning oil all over.
It started as a capicator bank failing and causing the arc fault to ground which drew excessive current. Normally, it would trip off the breakers but due to the protection hardware's power suppply failure, it just continued.
This video has been flying around the web for a while. From the original source, I have heard this may be the Ives Dairy Substation in Miami, Florida. Yes, it is the oil in the transformer tank that fueled the fire

Just out of interest can somebody tell me what fuels the fire from an electrical issue? I'm not being a smart ass, I actually want to know.

What was burning? Surely they wouldn't store highly flammable materials at a substation?
thekiwicanuck 3 years ago
The transformers need an electrically insulating coolant.
Before the 60's PolyChlorinated Bifenyl(PCB) was used.
Then mineral oil.
Today most new builds use either esters, flourinated hydrocarbons or silicone-based coolants.

Ah. Thanks for the info.

when you hear the bang you see a flash which is the high voltage fuse blowing and if you notice the fire started before the bang.

"wow u r really retarded if thats not an explosein i dont know wut is"
Since there's no shockwave and no sudden increase in volume; this is just a fireball.
