  • No words.

  • DIES IRAE DIAS ILLA SOLVET SAECLUM INFA VILLA

    Yeeeuh. This shit is deep.

  • I just finished an essay when 6:07 hit.

Excellent way to end an arduous assaignment no?

  • I've had scoliosis, causing me to have a hunched appearance until it was corrected; so even when I was younger and listened to this song, all I thought of was my hatred of Frollo. Quasi was never a monster to me :)

One thing I find cool, is that "quasi" means (i think) like half or fake, and I'm betting modo means man or something in Latin (I have no idea though!) so his name would mean half/fake man. That would be weird.

  • does anyone know if there is any footage of the recording session for this song like there is for a whole new world and part of your world? thanks!

  • The beginning sounds a lot like death note XD

  • PLEASE DISNEY BE THIS AWESOME AGAIN!!!!!!!

  • This soundtrack is horrible, yet so amazingly powerful!

  • Frollo is a Pharisee.

  • I'll be honest and say that when I listened to the part where he sang who is the monster and who is the man, i was old enough and wise enough to realize that a monster is more than just appearances.

  • alright... which one of you stole god's igod?!

  • When I was a kid, I thought Quazi was normal, and couldn't figure out what everybody was freaked out about him. I took a really hard look at the guy when I turned 15, and when I squinted I finally realized..."He's pretty short, isn't he?"

'Win' for thinking everybody looks how they do because it is natural~

  • Ah God, I love Clopin's voice, it brings back memories.

  • The Holy Trinity -- Alan Menken, Paul Kandel, and Tony Jay. :D

  • jesus christ chills every time

  • Did anyone else notice the cry of "Dies Irae" at 3.04 which continues for a while, translating as "God's Wrath". A nice reference considering the wrath is that of Frollo's, who believes he is a servent of that which is right. Great song.

  • For ten years, Disney has been working on another animated movie called Frozen, which tells the famous Hans Christian Andersen tale Snow Queen. It will be directed by the director of The Little Mermaid, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Beauty and the Beast. Alan Menken will be doing its music. It HAS to be good if those two are together. I can't wait.

  • The Hunchback has the most epic soundtrack out of all disney movies...I think it's due to the utilization of Latin. Latin makes EVERYTHING a billion times more epic

  • @surfergirl3537 and it has that "epic" and gothic feeling (sorta)

  • @surfergirl3537 As a third-year Latin student, I completely agree with this statement. ^_^

  • 5:54 greatest moment, thumb up for quasimodos epic entrance

  • Wow, reading the comments makes me feel like a genious for realizing right away that Frollo was the "monster." . . .then again he has just ten seonds earlier killed a woman and attempted to drown her baby in a well. =/

  • this man is an epic tenor.

  • my favorite disney movie of all time!

    it has something deep

    something different

and i just cant get enough of it (:

  • Alan Menken is a genius

  • God I love Clopin.

  • I've noticed there's a lot of talk of pagans in the comments. It's interesting that the word "pagan" comes from Latin "paganus", meaning "rustic" or "country-dweller". The origins of the term to mean "non-Christian" and thereabouts are unclear and up for debate, but it's believed to have originated in the Fourth Century CE. It's odd how words originate as one word and become something else without knowing why or how, isn't it? c:

  • This film has a beautiful soundtrack.

  • BELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLSSSSS OOOOOOOOOOOOOF NOOOOOOOOOOOOTREEEEEEEEEEE DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME!

  • Notre Dame is a MASTERPIECE

  • Comment removed

  • Quasi isn't ugly compared to the Phantom.

  • I remember reading this book in school and some guy started singing this when I did we're dating now ;)

  • The movie version of the Bells of Notre Dame is better than the soundtrack version; it's crisper and in the soundtrack version you can barely hear Clopin's EPIC last note. What I wouldn't give for a movie version that cuts the background sound effects...

  • @DragonflameWolfpaw You do have a valid point. Although I love both versions, I wish they'd made Paul Kandel's epic note more prominent in the soundtrack but you can hear EPIC chorus better in this, which is awesome *w*. The soprano voice at the end really overpowers Kandel here XD.

  • @RedyyChuu Eh, the chorus has prominence in practically the entire song, Kandel's last note is his moment to shine, and they drowned it in the chorus for no reason. It's a shame, that's all.

  • @DragonflameWolfpaw He gets his moment in the reprise, at least.

  • @DealerCamel Not really. Still gets drowned by the chorus. Anyway, I found my temporary solution. I spliced the audio of the ending part so it is the soundtrack version, but the last two minutes are from the movie. I get mostly no background noises and Paul Kandel's epic last note. Win-win.

  • nostalgia

  • All the things I never understood when I was little... the mother yelling "Sanctuary, please give us sanctuary!" just breaks my heart every time I hear it...it never struck me as a child, but now that I'm an adult I just feel her fear

  • This song is my goddamn childhood. I got the movie when I was about six, and I couldn't stop watching it ever since. (fourteen now) Every time I watched it, there was some kind of epic vibe, an emotion that gets me every time. I think that I'll grow up with this movie - it taught me so many things. <3

  • I cried at the end, not because of the "happy ending" but because i found out how it really ended, with him not beeing loved by Esmeralda. With Esmeralda beeing hung in the end. And last, with him, returning to Mountfaucon (graveyard in Paris), only to hold on to the dead body of his love until his own death.

I am sorry if this is a spoiler, but this is the true ending of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.

  • I blew out my own eardrums trying to hit that note at the end, and I'm not sure if I actually succeeded.

  • God it's stunning :Ο i love it with all my childish heart!

  • "Hush !" "Ow..."

  • Best epic soundtrack of all Disney movies.

  • I'm gonna admit, that when I heard the "Who is the monster, and who is the man?" lyric when was I was a child, I naturally assume that Quasimodo was the monster, and Frollo was the man because I judged them based on their appearances. Now, I realize that I was wrong, and Quasi was the man, and Frollo was the monster. What I learn from this movie was that everything is not as it seems. And I don't judge anyone by appearance because of this movie.

  • @hopefaith2 as a child though we grow up in a society where we judge on looks. As we grow up we learn there is lot more to people :)

  • @hopefaith2 The holy may look like pagans. The true heathens appear to be very religious. The most beautiful souls appear as outcasts to the world. A lesson indeed. Good lesson.

  • @SorokChyetirye What do you mean when you say "the holy may look like pagans"? Being pagan doesn't mean being bad.

  • @mranatomy1 Precisely! Pagans aren't bad people necessarily. We may misunderstand them, and they may misunderstand us. They may do some things that are wrong, just as Christians sometimes do things wrong. But there are pagans out there who love and respect the Lord God more than many a Christian. (They just don't yet know it's Him who they love.) Some pagans show Christian virtues like obedience and charity that you would be hard-pressed to find in nominal "Christians".

  • @SorokChyetirye U're very stupid and ignorant. U've completely missed the message of this song. They aren't saying that religious people specifically are corrupt, but that even in people that r generally viewed as morally sound there can be bad people. And that one shouldn't be judged by outward appearances. So yes, even outcasts can be cruel and twisted, but it all depends on the person not their looks or religious background.

  • @SenoraSempere

And you have missed sorokchyetire point he /she is not saying that ever

he did not say { specifically} it way s an life lesson for all but in a way the purposely use a religious official to deliver the message for a reason not to be

  • @SenoraSempere

stereo type or to say any thin about catholic priest but it is the stereo we as a people place on our self that realious people are all perfect and kind and ugly people are a miss fortune that’s what the point of the song the story went in a some what different direction by victor Hugo novel

  • @SenoraSempere You've misunderstood me. I am a Catholic Christian myself, love, and I know the vast majority of religious people and religious leaders are good-natured and well-meaning. Religion is not a bad thing by any stretch. It's a far better thing than atheism. Just as life is a far better thing than death, and order is far better than chaos.

Claude Frollo was neither moral nor righteous. He was prideful and arrogant. Yet he paraded his "religion" as if he were.

  • @SorokChyetirye Yeah, but i think death is not as bad as death. After you died, you are home, in the kingdom of heaven. Besides, you can meet again with the other that have kick the bucket before you.

  • @13CrimsonFox I agree. And personally, I hope every one merits heaven. Not because I think any of us deserve it. Even Hitler, I hope, gets into Heaven. Not because he deserves it. He was a wicked man. But I hope he had a change of heart eventually. It would be a terrible thing for any man to be so wicked and stubborn that he would refuse the saving grace of Our Lord God. It's not likely Hitler's in Heaven, but for shame if any one went to Hell.

  • @SorokChyetirye To me, the way u put it made it sound as if u were criticizing religion. But I apologize for misreading ur comment and calling u names. I just don't like it when someone sounds as if they are putting any group of people down for what they be or what they believe.

  • @SenoraSempere It's OK. Everyone's uptight about the subject of religion these days. I don't blame you for being so. ;-)

  • @hopefaith2 heh, I always thought that Frollo was a monster because he was mean- I never saw looks, just personalities~ Might have been because that was before I got glasses.... XD

  • @hopefaith2 I've known that all along, that Quasimodo was the Man and Frollo was the Monster, because Quasi has a very beautiful soul

  • @hopefaith2

well you did better then me i must of been a complete dunce as a child because i could not understan any other then asmerelda danceing enchanted me and the whips scared me so i kept hidding and running

away so i never got the chance to sit and watch untill now

  • @hopefaith2 it happened the same with me, but thats because in brazil they translated as something like "who's the monster and the man, who is?" so it would rhyme, so i always thought that quasimodo was both a monster and a man, until i watched the english version...

  • @hopefaith2 I think that was the point

  • Everytime i hear this song, i get waves and WAVES of goosebumps. unbelievable composition

  • good song;) but the german version is better :D

  • The way the gypsy man sings "the bells of notre dame" always gives *me* chills--hard to hear in this version though

  • The bells after the choir intro have given me chills ever since I first heard it as a kid.

    SO EPIC

  • Whoever it is that played Frollo in this....I LOVE his voice. It fits perfectly with the evil character that he is.

  • @bethtankesly Its the late great actor Tony Jay. He also voiced the narrator in Treasure Planet.

  • @avatarnarutochuck he is also the voice of the elder god in legacy of kain.

  • someone should make a dark version of this song or something

  • I love this opening!!!! The choir is so epic!!!!

  • Every-time I get to 5:54 I blank out until 6:07. I then realize that all of my hair has fallen out again. I should stop listening to this song.

  • Comment removed

  • I JUST love the opening chorus sound. Its so freaking pretty.

  • The voice of Radcliffe singing to Frollo. Bravo, Disney. So genius, so chilling. So beautiful.

*mourns for what Disney used to be*

  • 5 people don't know what a classic is.

  • This gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Best part of the movie.

  • @SonyaLensherr Agreed!

  • Clopin. The best part of this movie.

  • This theme for the field theme in Notre Dame-world in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

    plz nomura c:?

  • This movie was definitely a musical achievment for Disney, and, animated movies, and...well, movies in general.

  • Now I've zoomed to 1000% (Max I can do) And I still cant see the dislike bar!

  • @LucasTheLucky Holy s*%t! You really can't! xD

  • 4 people are silly boys.

  • I love Clopin-Disney's version that is

  • I'm suprised I haven't died from this song. It's epicness is immeasurable.

  • Man old Classics taught us so many lessons and morals! Especially this one! The lion king is my favorite disney classic EVER!! :D This is one of my favorites :D Princess and the Frog is also one of my newest favorites! :) I love Tiana :D This has a good musical score! Alan did GREAT :D i love it when Frollo says "A baby? (looks) GASP a MONSTER!! >8O" xD

  • wow this gives chills, that man can sing

  • Wow. Dies Irae, but... not... I've never seen the movie (I'm going to, I SWEAR! like, this week.)

I've been listening to a few disney songs lately.... But I just legit listened to this song, the words. Man, Dies Irae is the best.

  • In this recording, the last note sounds like it's sung by a woman. In the movie though, it's definitely Kandel.

  • "who is the monster and who is the man?"

    Best saying ever

  • @bloodycartoongirl Definitely Quasi :) i love that line too.

  • As a contralto/alto/bass/whatever you want to call a female singer of the lowest notes, I AM SO EFFING JEALOUS OF CLOPIN'S RANGE. DX

  • @slavesacrifice666 OMG yes!!!!!, its so freakin intense!! I love it this movie because of that awesome chanting and hellfire!

  • Music by Alan Menken. No way to go wrong with that. =^_^=

This opening number just screams epicness.

  • His voice. I could listen to it for the rest of my life and be happy. Freaking Miracles.

  • And the award for "song that gave me the most goosebumps during its course" goes to...The Bells of Notre Dame!

  • @bloodycartoongirl OH MY GOSH XDD!! Good one omg I'm laughing so hard!! XDD Ewwww rofl!

  • the chanting in the beginning always brings tears to my eyes.

  • This film is so under-rated but it's genuinely one of my favourite movies of all time!

  • RIP Tony Jay!

  • this movie is the best movie in the whole wide world

  • wow dos it only show that. That is shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhit

  • Disney must make more movies.

    Not flipping hannah montana!

  • I like how they cut out the baby's cries, but they still have the dialogue where the gypsies shush him. XD

  • The ending always gives me chills!

  • never realized lyrics are so deep, themes are way darker than what a child can perceive...i grew up and watched this again and thought, THIS WAS FOR CHILDREN????

  • @Amarynthine The book wasn't really for kids. I'm still amazed that Disney decided to make a film out of this book.

  • @Amarynthine The subject matter is definitely a little too mature for kids to understand. I am amazed that they showed the things they showed...like the mother dying, Frollo dying, etc. It was still a wonderful movie.

  • @Amarynthine and their parents

  • <3 PAUL KANDEL <3

  • If you think about it this is one of the most religious Disney movies

  • @spinjoh derp really? lol I would have never guessed.

  • @carnagex64 Oh gee thanks for being an asshole random ass stranger!

  • @spinjoh your welcome.

  • I heard this in Spanish and... wow... just wow

  • Clopin for president! :p

  • is it wrong to think Clopin is hot?

  • @p0p5tarz not at all xD

  • @p0p5tarz We all have our fan girl crushes, I just get to add him to my ever growing list :)

  • hahaha. Dies Irae. Classy.

  • eargasim O.O

  • Best part is that they are actually singing in latin.

  • Why isn't there a broadway version of HoND?

  • "Now here is a riddle to guess if you can," sing the bells of Notre Dame:

"Who is the monster and who is the man?"

    Best lyric. Hands down.

  • @HikariNoiresia Read the book by Victor Hugo, and you'll find it's much more difficult to "guess" :)

  • "You can lie to yourself and your minions, you can claim that you haven't a qualm. But you never can run from nor hide what you've done from the eyes...the very eyes of Notre Dame."

    Chills. Every single time.

  • I like how the songs actually mean something, and how they have speaking in them. The chanting is great. Much better than the usual Disney song, which is repititive and superfluous.

  • @unknownrostam

That's one of the reasons this is my favorite Disney movie.

  • I like the whole song, but I especially like how Dies Irae and Kyrie Eleison were woven into the background to add depth of sound and meaning.

  • "She ran!" Needs the thunder sound effect, I think.

  • Who is the monster and who is the man?

My god. His voice. And does anyone else hear that friggin high girl note at the end?!?!

  • @RegRage1000 I don't think that was his voice. I think there was a piece of the quoir covering that note.

Actually, it definately is a woman. You can hear her building up at the same time he is.

  • sing the bells bells bells bells bells bells bells bells. Bells Of Notre DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME!

  • best opening in disney film history

  • @Sonofbatman45 well I dunno. Rescuers Down Under had a pretty intense opening - that bit where it's zooming in on the house

  • what makes me laugh is how people are saying disney has turned shiet, you seen some of the new movies they produced? i guess not because your stuck in the past and most likly you are ignorant, watch toystory 3 - tangled and so on. There good to watch ..yeah the animation is more 3d now but thats technology for you. grow up people and yeah ive seen every old disney film - alice in wonderland beeing my favourite infact.

  • @Richi2k7 toy story 3 was pretty good but i think it was due to its history. who can imagine andy growing up and giving up his fav toys? the ending was actually emotional for me. i have seen a few of these new movies and they are ok but they dont live up to any of the classics such as this one.

  • @Richi2k7 The look isn't really the point as much as it is the storyline. Much don't have very good story lines and tend to drag on. Back then they got to the point and gave the viewer what they wanted instead of useless songs that took attention away from the storyline. That's something I don't see in new disney movies. They also try and sugar coat them nowadays for children which takes a lot of the fun out for most everyone else. So yeah its much more than that.

  • I love this movie<3

  • 0:31 i started singing and dancing to that part all the way to 6:24

  • The last part gives me shivers, so powerful! :)

  • The leader of the gypsies sings both lower than I can make myself go, and higher than I can make myself go, and I'm a girl. Who IS that guy, and where on EARTH did they find him? O.O

  • @Ginger498 I want to glomp/stalk him...his voice is far to smexy for his own good....this is why I love HoND, it brings many beautiful singers together, spreading wonderful messages ;A;

  • @Ginger498 i know, same with me too. according to imdb.com, the voice actor's name is paul kandel, and wherever disney found him, i'm sure they're pretty thankful that they did. his voice is so amazing :)

he also sang in the sequel to hunchback of notre dame (as the same character), and in "aladdin and the king of thieves"

  • @Ginger498 Disney picked Paul Kandel for the voice of Clopin after seeing his performance as Uncle Ernie in the Tommy musical!

  • @Ginger498 Paul Kandel, if you want to look him up.

  • @Ginger498 His name is Paul Kandel and he is a horribly under rated singer and performer with a fantastic voice. :)

  • @Ginger498 I can match his range actually, and I'm a guy.

  • @Ginger498 Singer's name is Paul Kandel.

  • @Ginger498 you're probably just having problems controlling your pitch range cause he's constantly changing his. i had the same problem and it can be hard to keep up. just practice and you'll be able to do it to :)

  • @Ginger498 The land of Autotune.

  • But you never can run from nor hide what you've done from the eyes...THE VERY EYES OF NOTRE DAME.

FUCKING SHIVERS. I always shiver at that part in the movie, I love that. I love when he looks up and the statues are actually physically watching him about to kill a baby. If only there were more of those freakin' statues around nowadays!

  • @crimrose that lyric gave me shivers just reading it in your comment!

  • I just love this song so much, I watched the movie in English French and Spanish just to hear the music in different languages.

  • This is one of the best Disney animated movie so far .. I love the renderings, the soundtracks and the voice actors .. great dialogues too! (for an animated movie, a rarity).

  • "A baby?" *looks* "A monster!"

Yah, so put away that mirror, you fool >.>.

  • This has to be the most underrated disney soundtrack. Epic, epic, EPIC!

  • 0:30 most epic opening to a disney movie ever! It truly captures the main song, Hellfire which I love to death!

  • If Clopin's singing doesn't give you chills, something is wrong, and it's definitely not the music.

  • best disney movie everrrrr :D
