@MyNameIsMiles727 That is not the reason why they did this, by this time they already knew electricity could kill. This was edisons attempt to get back at westinghouse for losing the acdc war. Topsy was a circus elephant who had come to the end of her time. Edison actually wanted to perform the electrocution to prove that his current was better. The owners of luna park actually sold tickets to the public to watch but then the crowds reaction was not a good one.

What is neglected to be mentioned here is that she was killed because she had killed three men in as many years.It was witnessed by over 1,500 people. It is actually a very historic moment and point trying to be made by Edison In staging and filming this (The danger of AC - Alternating Current being put to use in peoples homes). Topsy belonged to the Forepaugh Circus and spent the last years of her life at Coney Island's Luna Park.
