80-83 short 3 years but I remember them well living in Ridgefield. I lived on Old Sib Rd where turtle pond is and right down the hill was memanesco Lake. I kayak now. What a great thing it would be to go back and Kayak there.
I have always had fond memories of living in Ridgefield as a 12 year old English girl in 1976...the memories were fond...scotland school, friends etc. Seeing this i'm afraid i'm revolted by the nationalistic, narrow minded parocialness that is the American Memorial Day parade. Sorry But just look at yourselves.
I am revolted by your lack of command over the English language. Even if you meant to type "parochialism" you are still being redundant. Sad that you would be "revolted" by a tradition that honors the US service men and woman who saved your country in WWII.
Point taken. It's really only the flag waving, beauty queen aspect that i find 'odd'. We have such parades here but they are more solumn occasions, rememberence rather than celebration. It's the celebration aspect to war just or otherwise i find awful. My comment read quite rudely and for that i apologise. And as for my spelling....your right it stinks.

I brought a Chilean fellow student to a Rhode Island parade with pre-school majorettes. political satire floats. police throwing candy to children.
He said that all of his prior experience was of military parades with required attendance, but this was a community fair.
Little boys like loud noises and big machines. Older boys like those things and big chests as well.
I think it is an event of community solidarity and neighborly affection-- with LOCAL military units and equipment thrown in.
