  • cat can play.

  • some; are just born with it seems to me:

  • amazing

  • @eyeshighfly I WISH THEY STILL DID.

  • spritualy magic

  • no dislikes...yessss

  • undeniable, the talents of Jr.'s band were insane,i miss real music.Artist have no need for talent the day's,auto tune my ass!

  • Outstanding, unique and timeless.

  • should have been titled Vanessa Del Rio V.S. Muhammad Ali.Very sensual, very sexual, yet Violent and yet again .Most Graceful.

  • I'm sure Small World "Livin' Free" (on DJ Kicks Kruder & Dorfmeister) must have sampled this.

  • top notch!!!!

  • Your right, both volumes are fantastic, and are so far ahead of the competition, it's unreal. But your also right, that he needed lot of help from those brilliant session musicians, who also went on to be great solo artists. Without them, the whole atmosphere of the 2 volumes would be completely different. But it was aptly titled as well, it has the look and feel of a genuine Masterpiece. My Favourite artist was JIMI HENDRIX, and he jammed with anyone who was around, for as long as he could.

  • I remember owning both volumes of this bad boy. Ron Carter, Eric Gale, Idris Muhammad, Bob James, Hubert Laws, Airto, Richard Tee, Ralph MacDonald and the CTI house band. This "Soul Box" was truly a "Masterpiece".

  • with this newly acquired funk i am going to create the nastiest first mixtape ever

  • Respond to this video... have u made it yet my dude

  • this captures that early 70s sound better than any other track in the world, and the way it builds up to the crescendo at the end is AWSOME, and his use of the two different saxaphones is AWSOME as well, as is the use of the synthesisers. When you hear this at the age of 20 it CHANGES YOUR LIFE FOR EVER, and you realise you can't compete with AFRICAN/AMERICANS, just adore them. BUT HIS VERSION OF MARVIN GAYES ''INNER CITY BLUES'' IS EVEN BETTER, Who did original of Masterclass? Temptations?

  • @redcreem "Masterpiece" was originally played by the Temptations.

  • Wow - just imagine that he was only about 30 when he recorded this. I wonder if he had any idea of how great he would be - even more after his passing? He is truly missed. @rivingeye2 - as always thanks for posting and keep up the good work.

  • truly epic track, one of my favourites. Highly underrated album, I have 2 copies that only cost a couple of pounds, but they're priceless to me!

  • This is cold.......ooh!......listen to it for about five days now throughout the rotation.....

  • heard 'Masterpiece' for the first time when I found this upload. *gasp* I have become addicted. Can't stop playing it. When I get to heaven, I'm gonna go sit on Grover's cloud, happy just to listen. May he play forever...

  • first time i heard grover i was 20yrs old with my girl in 1980 it blew my mind , my god what a master, what its 2011 there you go that says it all.

  • so smooooooooth..it's almost like falling into a warm waterfall

  • This is great. takes me all the way back! do you have inner city blues?

  • And lets not forget Curtis Mayfield. another 100 percent genius.

  • Yeah , what a thrill, to have both Masterpiece versions. I have them both together, and love to hear the contrasts. These are my absolute favorites . !!!Norman Whitfield was a master arranger of pieces including Tempts. version of "Smiling faces ", done in 1970. Listen to the first 4 minutes. like heaven !!! Another great arranger is Bruce Hawes, who was with MFSB. thank you.

  • This seems like it has a hint of funk in it... Pure Genius!

  • What a great jazz musician. It was his music that introduced me to jazz.

  • Meme sample que "C.O.D - House Nihha Intro"

  • Is just a Masterpiece ! thanks Grover...

  • Grover passed on just days after my 15th birthday in December 1999 and today that is a big loss to the music community and to all of us. I greatly miss him to this day. A real inspiration to me when it comes to real music apprecation and knowledge.

  • The bass line to this remake was sampled by MC Hammer for "Brothers Hang On"

  • @imthebrother thank you

  • ebebimik: what is it?

  • Masterpiece indeed!

  • I LOVE THIS AMAZIN + FGROOVY WORK OF ART

  • GWJr captured all of the flavors of the urban existence in his music better than any other jazz musician of his era...RIP my brother...

Once again , Thank you to Grover , as you will be missed so much and appreciated.

  • indeed it is a msterpiese!!

  • Hard to believe Grover is no longer with us. He left us in December 1999, 4 days after his birthday, at the age of 56! However, he has left plenty of good stuff for us to keep living on.

  • Hmm. so when they released that Jam session on Blues Brothers 2000 he had already passed on.

  • Simply a masterpiece

  • beats me...and where did you get those ridiculous shoes...I love them!

  • so where does he sample voices from blaq poet cuz i dont hear it ????lol

  • Premier Sample

  • @djgaaz uhhhh no

  • @djgaaz this is not voices sample... where da fuck do you find it?!

  • @autte This isn't the entire track. The sample is at the beginning of the full track.

  • would you by any chance have the instrumental version of LOOK AT THIS? FROM THE 1986 Cosby Show album-a house full of love? it was played on two episodes of the cosby show. one episode was BIRTHDAY BLUES, where cliff and clair eat the strawberry whipped cream cake.

the other episode was when cliff and clair were in a contest to see who looked "the smoothest"

  • ♪♪♪ simply amazing!

  • you got it smoothJC

  • No doubt one of my all time favorites as a kid especially with Creed Taylor at the helm. I sampled this for a Bone Thugs-N-Harmony remix called E. 1999. Ironic that was the year he passed and also a day after my birthday.

  • that was saxy

  • One of the greatest tracks ever!

  • Thanks for posting this! Classic jazz-funk!

  • saxyfantastic.

  • *****

  • great stuff

  • Reminds me a bit of Nautilus by Bob James.

  • As might be expected, since Bob James was the pianist on this album. Musicians were a who's who of jazz, included Aierto, Hubert Laws, James and a lot of others.

'Nautilus' was released in 1974 and 'Soul Box' in 1973, so it's safe to say James' work on this influenced Nautilus.

  • Ah, ok, did not know that :) Anyway, great sound, very spacey with lots of reverb, love those real strings, real horns, Fender Rhodes...

  • My pleasure. I have two copies of this on vinyl. You are so right about the horns and strings. There are about 35 musicians on this album (too lazy to go count 'em). There's a lot of talk about the "wall of sound", but this is really it. All the influences of the era are there, including some Issac Hayes inspired guitar.

For my money, this is the best sax solo ever recorded.

    Cheers!

  • Isaac Hayes, never thought about it, but it is true, the bass brass, the strings as well as the flute or whatever it is sound a bit like Shaft.

Unfortunately some of GW's songs are not available on Youtube over here, I have to log on as an American to be able to hear them. Am still looking for some songs from an old Motown album of his I used to have. I don't even remember the name of it, nor what it looked like :P But I still remember the music and the Motown label on the record :)

  • Highly Intoxicating Piece...Thanks for the upload!!!

  • PURE genius , the creative assemblement of this track is a MASTERPIECE .

  • My thoughts exactly. Superb intsrumentation and great spacial atmosphere.
