Your right, both volumes are fantastic, and are so far ahead of the competition, it's unreal. But your also right, that he needed lot of help from those brilliant session musicians, who also went on to be great solo artists. Without them, the whole atmosphere of the 2 volumes would be completely different. But it was aptly titled as well, it has the look and feel of a genuine Masterpiece. My Favourite artist was JIMI HENDRIX, and he jammed with anyone who was around, for as long as he could.
I remember owning both volumes of this bad boy. Ron Carter, Eric Gale, Idris Muhammad, Bob James, Hubert Laws, Airto, Richard Tee, Ralph MacDonald and the CTI house band. This "Soul Box" was truly a "Masterpiece".
this captures that early 70s sound better than any other track in the world, and the way it builds up to the crescendo at the end is AWSOME, and his use of the two different saxaphones is AWSOME as well, as is the use of the synthesisers. When you hear this at the age of 20 it CHANGES YOUR LIFE FOR EVER, and you realise you can't compete with AFRICAN/AMERICANS, just adore them. BUT HIS VERSION OF MARVIN GAYES ''INNER CITY BLUES'' IS EVEN BETTER, Who did original of Masterclass? Temptations?
Wow - just imagine that he was only about 30 when he recorded this. I wonder if he had any idea of how great he would be - even more after his passing? He is truly missed. @rivingeye2 - as always thanks for posting and keep up the good work.
heard 'Masterpiece' for the first time when I found this upload. *gasp* I have become addicted. Can't stop playing it. When I get to heaven, I'm gonna go sit on Grover's cloud, happy just to listen. May he play forever...
Yeah , what a thrill, to have both Masterpiece versions. I have them both together, and love to hear the contrasts. These are my absolute favorites . !!!Norman Whitfield was a master arranger of pieces including Tempts. version of "Smiling faces ", done in 1970. Listen to the first 4 minutes. like heaven !!! Another great arranger is Bruce Hawes, who was with MFSB. thank you.
Grover passed on just days after my 15th birthday in December 1999 and today that is a big loss to the music community and to all of us. I greatly miss him to this day. A real inspiration to me when it comes to real music apprecation and knowledge.
How can i possibly express my gratitude to Grover Washington jr. This is truly wonderful ! ! ! Be sure to also have a listen to Norman Whitfields , Temptations Version , which, was actually the original, having been written by norman Whitfield. Once again , Thank you to Grover , as you will be missed so much and appreciated.
This just dont make no sense, this man put together something tis awesome, check out that serious bass guiter,he just laying back throwing down.Grover you were a baaad man.
Hard to believe Grover is no longer with us. He left us in December 1999, 4 days after his birthday, at the age of 56! However, he has left plenty of good stuff for us to keep living on.
would you by any chance have the instrumental version of LOOK AT THIS? FROM THE 1986 Cosby Show album-a house full of love? it was played on two episodes of the cosby show. one episode was BIRTHDAY BLUES, where cliff and clair eat the strawberry whipped cream cake.
the other episode was when cliff and clair were in a contest to see who looked "the smoothest"
No doubt one of my all time favorites as a kid especially with Creed Taylor at the helm. I sampled this for a Bone Thugs-N-Harmony remix called E. 1999. Ironic that was the year he passed and also a day after my birthday.
As might be expected, since Bob James was the pianist on this album. Musicians were a who's who of jazz, included Aierto, Hubert Laws, James and a lot of others.
'Nautilus' was released in 1974 and 'Soul Box' in 1973, so it's safe to say James' work on this influenced Nautilus.
My pleasure. I have two copies of this on vinyl. You are so right about the horns and strings. There are about 35 musicians on this album (too lazy to go count 'em). There's a lot of talk about the "wall of sound", but this is really it. All the influences of the era are there, including some Issac Hayes inspired guitar.
For my money, this is the best sax solo ever recorded.
Isaac Hayes, never thought about it, but it is true, the bass brass, the strings as well as the flute or whatever it is sound a bit like Shaft.
Unfortunately some of GW's songs are not available on Youtube over here, I have to log on as an American to be able to hear them. Am still looking for some songs from an old Motown album of his I used to have. I don't even remember the name of it, nor what it looked like :P But I still remember the music and the Motown label on the record :)
