This is my all time favorite steven chow movie. Even steven chow admits that this is still his favorite film to this day. There are just so many classic (not just the typical hong kong "goofy" style) funny scenes/lines in one movie.

We will never know for sure what would happen if another guy dubbed for Stephen Chow. Maybe he will be less successful in terms of making money (though I really doubt that, since Stephen's own voice brought him much success outside mainland). But he might be regarded as a real actor rather than just someone making senseless jokes if he is dubbed by a more sincere voice (a voice similar to his own). How do you define success? Money, or critical acclaim?

HK magazine sometimes writes in Cantonese. Most Stephen Chow's Cantonese films have mandarin subtitles. I just love Stephen Chow's real voice, especially in scenes with a lot of emotions (such as when he says "I love you" in the love story of A Chinese Odyssey (大話西遊)). It brought me to tears. I think stephen Chow is much misunderstood in Mainland China because the Taiwan guy who dubbed for him has such a 'fake' voice. That was not Stephen Chow's real style at all.

The Taiwanese guy was the main reason why Stephen was so misunderstood in mainland. They thought Stephen was about making senseless jokes. Stephen was a lot more than making cheap jokes. He was about telling stories of the hard lives of the people at the bottom of the society. And one really needs a sincere voice (like Stephen's voice) to portray the harsh reality of their lives.

If you can't understand Cantonese, you can read the subtitles. Most people who have seen Stephen Chow's cantonese versions and the mandarin dub will tell you Stepen Chow's real voice is much better in terms of acting and real emotions. The guy who does the Mandarin voice for Stephen just has a voice that is a little 'fake'. But Stephen's own voice is very real and sincere. Why not watch the real version with subtitles?
