Ah Rush a band full of under-rated genius .A fantastic transition from early prog rock gods to a modern pop rock band of epic proportions .nuf said.........
One of only three good songs on one dreadful botch of an album. It's so hard to believe this was only a few years after masterpieces like Moving Pictures and Signals. Mediocre songwriting, massive Synth overuse. What the hell happened? The recovered for a bit with Presto, gave me some hope, then Roll The Bones was even worse, blech.
@karlmoles65 I have to agree with you that this is not one of their best albums, and that it does have a lot of unappealing songs in it, but I disagree with what you think of Roll the Bones. I think right when Presto came out, it gradually got better from there. Roll the Bones was a pretty good album, though I hated the rapping section in the song. Then when Counterparts came out, I think that "Rush" kinda feel started coming back.
@jerrythepotato1919 Well I disliked Roll The Bones intensely. To me, Rush's last great album was Grace Under Pressure, and last really good album was Presto. Since then I'd rank them all from good to poor. There are a few songs I like from all of them, but from Grace Under Pressure on back? The whole album was fantastic, every time. That's my take anyway. And experimentation? I'm all for it.
IMO Snakes and Arrows is infinitely better than Presto and Test for Echo is finitely better than Presto. Grace Under Pressure is great and I thought Power Windows was the last album in their "great job" streak. The point is, I can't stand early Rush and the early Rush albums are not winners to me...Snakes and Arrows is, for me, possibly better than Moving Pictures. Main Monkey Business > YYZ...these are opinions...
@FeelingFreshSon Not me, but that's the good thing about opinions. Everyone's different. To me though saying Snakes & Arrows is better than Moving Pictures is like saying a bologna sandwich is better than a 50 dollar steak.
Look out for the force without form...I was playing this in the car trying to achieve a higher level of understanding and then my brother interrupts with "I want to eat at Subway"
People I know who like Rush either like the early Rush, the new Rush (Vapor Trails and so on), or both, yet not the 80's era. Sure, their sound changed, but it was the 80's, the synthesizer and new age sound was fucking popular as Hell, and they're a group of musicians who can be influenced instead of keeping a closed mind.
@FoxeyHound Dude they brought out Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire and Presto in the 80's. I don't think there is a single Rush fan alive who didn't like 80's Rush
@MrCoombesie 1976's 2112 and 1978's Hemispheres were the classic albums which inspired me to become a drummer. Don't get me wrong... 80's Rush kicked some serious ass and influenced my drumming even more! RUSH RULES!!
@FoxeyHound dude there are people like me who love it all...loves 80s rush..this song is awesome as is all of power windows a truly great album...from working man to bu2b...these guys are a deep pat of my life and i thank god for them...any mood im in Rush has music for it
What can I say except 'I love it'? The vocals and musicianship of the band is awesome! Honestly, I don't care who likes and dislikes anything, I just came to listen!
Pure excellence !!! .. I remember they opened with this song when I saw them on the Roll the Bones tour ... one of the best shows I've seen performance wise and visually .. they had one of the best light shows I've ever seen !!!
I can't believe I'm saying this, and you guys can criticize me all you want, but I think Force Ten is the one song where I prefer the live performance (R30 DVD in Frankfurt) to the studio recording. With pretty much every other song Ive heard, I thought the studio recording was ridiculously good, and added to the live performance, whereas here, I think the live performance stands alone as great.
If I’m not mistaken, the song “Force Ten” was the last song that was added to the “Hold Your Fire” (album/ cd) due to their current record label (Mercury) “forced” them to add a “tenth” track or they were going to sue, so they did and also change the name to “Force Ten” and then rush changed record labels from Mercury to Capital.
@JgHaverty I agree, also on a side note, when the USA first went to war in Iraq, the US Military called it “Desert Storm” and one of the major Cable news channel used the “Force Ten” song as their theme music.
I actually think this is one of their top 3 albums. Suddenly they got all issue conscious maybe because U2 & REM had reached mega proportions with that appraoch. The legendary Show of Hands concert tour (available on dvd) highlighted this phase of their development. Big Money, Red Sector A, Manhattan Project, Time Stand Still, The Mission, Roll the Bones, Red Tide; all very conscentious and also morphed them from being progressive only, to being symphonic progressive.Dream Theater followed this.
@kevingthompson13 I truely believe they are one of the most under rated bands.I recently watched a “Rush” documentary and the group played down that they thought during the albums when Geddy was using the keyboards (Synthesizer); they felt like they strayed away from the older music that were known for. But, I liked all of their stuff, old and new. I felt they adjusted with the times and explored different styles. Just my opinion.
@1excell1 Actually, around 80 or 81, Polygram got involved with them and got them to think.Their music had been too spacey and disconnected.Polygram got them to think about writing songs that were meaningful. They worked on some new "different" stuff and Polygram signed them to a contract. That gave us 5 or 6 of the best albums ever produced back to back. It just goes to show, when a record label actually likes music, they steer the talent in the right directions, not just the profit ones.
Just went too awesome show. See them for the Presto (twice), roll-the-bones ( i think there was anthor cant remember) tours. Just love the wonderful music so much. had to go again for the Machine Tour. And if they come again i will go again, no question!!

people piss and moan about the synths but Rush has been pretty good at time signatures..I enjoyed everything that led up to Power Windows..They were enjoying bands like The Police and they brought in a new producer to keep up with the times..That album had the most songs at one time for them on the radio..That album was the #1 concert of the year...and it was amazing..They found new fans..I would never hold Power Windows against them.
@Tod661 Yeah, that stretch of albums including “Moving Pictures” and thru to “Roll The Bones” are all my fav’s. I can’t pic “One” as my favorite. And you can’t forget “2112”,
there will never be another band like rush.Like a finely tuned engine all 3 members played there role to the tee. each one serving their purpose to create one of the most talented and creative bands of all time. e1 talks of neils great percussion but few mention his knack for writing great songs. Long live rush.
@CRASHMAGNET2011 Rush made a 45 in 1969 under their own lable. So they have been making records for 41 years as of now. They just didn't get a big record deal until 1974 of their self titled album. They had given this record out and no one cared for it at the time. When Zeppelin became more popular, some Radio DJ in Ohio found Rush's single and played it on Amatuer night, People thought it was Led Zeppelin and asked when that album came out. @barkingclam Um, I hate to tell you this, but that's a guy singing the song. Geddy Lee has a high-pitched voice. But don't feel bad; I thought the same thing you did when I first heard the song.
always thought perts playing was great. but bonzos drums just sound better.I think pert may even be better but his drums sound flat compared to the roar of bonzo's
@smithdsmit stfu. Stop talking about other bands on rush vids. Even though I love zeppelin just as much and play both drummers stuff...it's annoying, you can't compare guys like this. They are great in their own way and you can't even say "one is better than the other" because that's not how music should be.
Power Windows was the beginning of my dislike for Rush but this album totally put me over the edge. Way too poppy and cheesy casio sounds. I love Signals and GUP but this album just didn't rock at all. It wasn't until Counterparts when I started listening to them again.
When I heard this song for first time back at 80s, I visioned it to be a song to be listened at clear, crisp autumn day. When sun shines but doesn't warm anymore, only makes air bright so that you can see far away... And the sound can fly in cool, clear air, miles and miles and miles. Love this song, and Hold your fire is my most beloved Rush album.
A lot of Rush fans I know do not like their 80's sound. I actually find it VERY musical and technically advanced. They made the synth and guitar sounds of the 80's sound cool; compared to many of the cheezy-sounding pop bands on the radio!
@utahdrumtech i dont care for much of 80's rush. but you are right. they did make good use of the synths. it did sound much better then the other stuff out their.I just like the heavier guitar based 70's stuff. seen rush last summer. they still sound great. getty is by far the best bassitst in the world
@utahdrumtech This dude has a brain listen to him. I loved the synths to dude.. Just think no Subdivisions or a boring Witch Hunt with no balls...Yuck. The Kborads came in and left with typical perfect Rush fluidity.
@bigtwit Aloud me to disagre about Neil Peart not technical, He is, not just saying because I am a fan he really is complete! Only thing is that he don´t show is fellings like keith moon or john bonham.
I took drums for about 5 years from a teacher who studied them in university for 5 years.
This was early 90s.
I can tell you for fact.
What drummers are doing these days in terms of the stuff that Neil does not play, is post-modern garbage no different than call a crushed can on the ground "art" by putting a frame around it.
I funk drumming, everything is offbeat. That's what I played. Odd and hard to play. But now, these cats throw in an off beat snare WHERE EVER THE FUCK.
@SolidKodi Agreed Neil Peart has talent, lots of it.
I want make another point that there are other drummers out there that who are more technically capable than Neil Peart, let's not deny that. But only one person can play Rush music as well as he does, and that's Neil himself. Listen to some other so called great drummers play to Rush songs on tribute albums and boy do they sound like crap. They overplay and their sound does not suit the music at all.
@TEMPmichaelhansen hey bro- it is at the :12 sec mark. it is a synth laugh of a child. i used to play it in a rush tribute band. the pedal that Geddy uses contains the sample. peace and good ? mang~ the original hoopaloop inventor
I was so disappointed when this album came out. Power Windows was stretching it with me but this was way too poppy sounding. I was done with Rush until Counterparts came out.
@fizbin321 Yeah, I know what you're saying but I did like Presto a lot more than Hold Your Fire. Counterparts went with a nice heavier sound and brough more of a bass sound as well while Hold Your Fire was all treble.
@braxtheaxeman21, neil's sense of timing is just off the charts. that's why he wears those headphones on red sector A....absolutely BRILLIANT i tell ya, GOD LIKE...what am i saying??? NEIL IS GOD !!!
I love Rush in all forms throughout their career. this was the one album I was scratching my head a bit? Hold your fire has a couple of gems on it though. Force ten being one of them for sure.

@utahdrumtech i dont care for much of 80's rush. but you are right. they did make good use of the synths. it did sound much better then the other stuff out their.I just like the heavier guitar based 70's stuff. seen rush last summer. they still sound great. getty is by far the best bassitst in the world
smithdsmit 1 year ago
@utahdrumtech This dude has a brain listen to him. I loved the synths to dude.. Just think no Subdivisions or a boring Witch Hunt with no balls...Yuck. The Kborads came in and left with typical perfect Rush fluidity.

Let's be clear, Neil Peart plays drums musically.
Yes others may have more technique than the large amount of technique he already has.
But let's be clear, he really adds to Rush's music rather than being just a great technical drummer showing off chops that other drummers like to be.
Every fill has a purpose.
bigtwit 1 year ago 43
@bigtwit "every fill has a purpose..." classic......... i think neil would even like that for his own. peace :)
humbledrumah 1 year ago
@bigtwit Aloud me to disagre about Neil Peart not technical, He is, not just saying because I am a fan he really is complete! Only thing is that he don´t show is fellings like keith moon or john bonham.
ewq14 1 year ago
I took drums for about 5 years from a teacher who studied them in university for 5 years.
This was early 90s.
I can tell you for fact.
What drummers are doing these days in terms of the stuff that Neil does not play, is post-modern garbage no different than call a crushed can on the ground "art" by putting a frame around it.
I funk drumming, everything is offbeat. That's what I played. Odd and hard to play. But now, these cats throw in an off beat snare WHERE EVER THE FUCK.
D33veeoss 1 year ago
If you want to insult a drummer, call him/her a "different every time drummer."
That should piss them off if they aren't and they shouldn't know what the fuck you're talking about if they are.
D33veeoss 1 year ago
@bigtwit To be honest I don't think any drummer out there can even come close to the amount of talent Peart has.
SolidKodi 1 year ago
@SolidKodi Agreed Neil Peart has talent, lots of it.
I want make another point that there are other drummers out there that who are more technically capable than Neil Peart, let's not deny that. But only one person can play Rush music as well as he does, and that's Neil himself. Listen to some other so called great drummers play to Rush songs on tribute albums and boy do they sound like crap. They overplay and their sound does not suit the music at all.
Neil strikes a perfect balance.
bigtwit 1 year ago
@bigtwit Good man
SolidKodi 1 year ago
@bigtwit Not only that the man has written 98% of the Lyrics for every Rush song.
dinglenutzz 1 year ago
@bigtwit So, you could say Neil's drumming is fulfilling his purpose?

I was so disappointed when this album came out. Power Windows was stretching it with me but this was way too poppy sounding. I was done with Rush until Counterparts came out.
fizbin321 1 year ago
@fizbin321: Then they had a masterful comeback with Vapor Trails and Snakes & Arrows, huh? Earthshine, Secret Touch, Malignant Narcissism, etc.
Shit, these guys are GETTING BETTER as they age. Friggin' amazing.
Armando2012102 1 year ago
@fizbin321 Yeah, I know what you're saying but I did like Presto a lot more than Hold Your Fire. Counterparts went with a nice heavier sound and brough more of a bass sound as well while Hold Your Fire was all treble.
