I have always loved the Renee Fleming version of this lovely song but now I have found a new favourite, this is wonderful, A great voice,[to me anyway], thanks for posting!
Shame this is such a bad recording. I have an old Decca L.P. made in the late 60's with Lorengar singing this aria - simply the finest interpretation ever, I think, and very good sound also!
@ scvoice : I'm doing exactly the same as you did, sir.Trying to compare in order to find the most suitable and satisfying interpretation, so I may download it to my blog. The "sound" of Korngold is unique. Did you already listen to Das Wunder der Heliane here at YT ? Renée Fleming is wonderful. I think I'll go for Marietta's Song by Anne-Sofie von Otter and for Fleming's "Das Wunder" : so, twice emotion and beauty for the price of 1.
I have listened to at least 10 different performances of this excerpt today, and I have rarely been so moved by both beautiful music and equally beautiful singing. This one is no exception. Each singer brought this old curmudgeon to the brink of tears as she sang of "younger, better days." Thanks to all who have posted. Happy Holidays!
Ironic that this glorious performance should have received such limited release. It should have been on the DG release of highlights. An ethereal rendition from a sublime singer.
@Nagennif1011 If you look at the LP release of highlights from the Bing Gala, you will see "Volume 1" under the title. Clearly, DG intended to release more highlights from the Gala, but PROBABLY couldn't get clearance from the artists (singers and conductors) or from their recording companies and/or agents - or, perhaps, couldn't negotiate a favorable enough deal with the Met Orchestra. Too bad - this is a GREAT clip, and so are the other performances from this special evening.
E meravigliosa e bellissima voce! I'm generally not a fan of Korngold but have always loved this piece. Lorengar does a wonderful job here. Riposa in pace Pilar.
I was there that night, and this was easily the most exquisite singing of the night. I am grateful to hear this selection again. No lack of respect to Nilsson, Corelli, Tucker, Sutherland, Pavarotti, Price, Rysanek et al--that was a golden age!
I've just listened to this again - I find myself returning at least once a week to hear this all over again. By the way, Maria Jeritza - the soprano introduced this opera (and this aria) to the Metropolitan some fifty years earlier, was at the gala. Can you imagine what this felt like for Lorengar to sing this with Jeritza herself looking on? I cannot imagine.
This is a precious momento of a stunning performance- and if there is video footage of this gathering dust in a closet someplace I hope it will come to light someday. . . In the meantime, being able to hear this is a precious privilege. I not only love Lorengar's singing, I also love how Bohm conducted this - and especially how he allowed that exquisite postlude to spin out gently and radiantly - - - and thank heavens the audience restrained themselves from clapping too soon. Thanx 4 the gem.
This is an extremely difficult aria to sing and sing well. Pilar Lorengar accomplishs an exceptional performance. This is a special recording. Thank you.

@TheVaughan5 may be bad because it´s live..Bing gala in 1972
And live its always more authentic than recording (no chance to make a second shot !!! )
But she sang it beautiful in both and thats the point ...

Wonderful, though compressed files do not reflect the full bloom of this spectacular voice. I can only imagine live...

I've always loved Lorengar's voice. But for Marietta's Lied, I'll take Sills any day. her version is the only one that has ever made me weep.

Es una veguenza que esta cantante sublime no se incluyera en la gala del Metropolitan editada en video.
