I have long noticed the connections between Donizetti and Verdi. donizetti's dramatic ensembles (first act of Lucretia Borgia, Several of the Lucia ensembles) always put me in mind of Verdi's dramatic climaxes. I adore both composers.
I saw this serie 25 years ago, and It catches my attention by the first time. very interesting life and wonderful music. there must be more series like that. culture and television are not incompatibles.
It's like a Clint Eastwood spaghetti western: the star (Ronald Pickup) speaks English, the rest of the cast speaks Italian. They dub the cast for English countries and it's not too bad because the lead player is not being dubbed, and they dub the lead for Italy and it's pretty good because the rest of the cast doesn't need to be dubbed. It's not great, but it's good and I watch it about once every 5 years. From what I read, Verdi was even more can cantankerous than he's depicted in the video!

By the way, Roberta Peters does an intro of each episode of the mini-series.

20-year-old Giuseppe Verdi, in the dusty upper gallery of La Scala in 1833, gets inspiration from the music of Donizetti.
From the 1984 ten and a half hour miniseries, "The Life of Verdi",
starring Ronald Pickup.
(That's not Pickup in the video, but an actor who played Verdi when he was younger. Pickup's resemblance to Verdi is amazing.)
Una Furtiva Lagrima performed by
Cesare Valletti
Available on Kultur DVD.
