The comarpison is justified. In the mid 80's these two were the biggest band s in Britain. And before U2 became concerned with commercial success, they produced some great albums. Unfortunately, U2 became bigger and the rest is history.
I was working at Discount records when American Can Corp. bought it from Pickwick. They cut our hours to around 20 a week, so we wouldn't qualify for benefits.
I came home with the demo for this lp, stashed my rent money under a book at the head of my bed, and ran a block for some smokes before putting on the lp.
When I returned and went to stash my change, I found the rest gone, stolen by a "friend". I sat on the back stoop next to a dried out pot of beans and listened to this song. Perfect.
Have to agree, classic song, Will is amazing, the little noises he makes are incredible to me, in my opinion they changed after porcupine, ocean rain is good but after seeing them on the tube before the lp came out i was disappointed as the tube performance was excellent, HUH is the best lp, 2 of my fave tracks of all bunnies are way out and up we go and broke my neck.
Actually, we were both wrong. Tick Tock came out in May of '80, followed by U2's first album later that year. Perhaps you were thinking of "A Celebration" which came out between Boy and October?
Will sounds more like surf guitar to me, and I mean that as a great compliment. Edge probably borrowed more from Television. By the way, Heaven Up Here is probably my favorite Bunnymen Album.
I think so. Not his exact style, but his anti-guitar-hero way of playing. Verlaine and Edge (and Will) practice a certain economy of notes. I've read interviews with Edge where's he's stated that he treats notes as if they are really expensive, so he only plays what he can afford--what the song calls for. I love that.
I agree. It's about passion, not outright virtuosity. I've seen and heard virtuosity for it's own sake and after awhile it's a bore. I'll take passionate economy any day! I love the Bunnymen!!!
@skrason where the edge is concerned I think that is a way of admitting he is basically not a very talented guitarist. He is the least natural high profile guitarist of all time.
his talking a bout a drug?

This song is Echo and the Bunneymen supreme and actually in music, defines the 80s between new wave, punk, and intense poetry set to music!

so obvious where the "edge" got his inspiration from.....allright WILL!!!!
ljpw93 3 years ago
No way. Edge already had his sound established with 11 Oclock Tick Tock, and that came out in what, '78?
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Bunnymen!
skrason 3 years ago
Not so!!11 Oclock Tick Tock came out in "82"
With a hip was on Heaven up here, "81"
Both Sargeant and the edge are brilliant guitarists but Will has that touch of Genius.

Also, you can see that with Les--there might be more virtuosic bassists around also, but he plays with more passion than many I have heard.
