I have this same motor on a 16 foot glassmaster trihull but it has a hard time planing out. Iboats says the boat weighs about 850 pounds I think that me my GF and gear ice chest and fishing stuff probably bring it close to 1600 pounds. I dont know what RPM its running at because its not working. I am gona fix it and I guess I'll mess with he prop until I get it to 5600 rpm.
i had the same thing with mine 65 hp it was the float sticking i had to replace them with new ones they have better ones out and if you have gasoling run out of the front of the cab's it's your rees need to be replace ! after that my outboard ran great..before she was run very bad ! front of the engine was very wet from the gas runing all over ! now that is fix she run like a new engine ! agian ! i have put many miles on her ..then i'm done for the day i run the gas out of the cab's ..
do u ever have problems with gas coming out of the carbs? this is the exact same motor as we have on our boat it sounds just like but yours is revved higher than ours how do u adjust that?
Gas coming out of the carbs could be a float sticking in the carb or just in need of a general cleaning. There are no adjustments to make it revv higher. Depending on the weight of your boat, the number of people on board, and the pitch of your prop will determine how fast you will go and how high it will revv.
hi there i have the same engine 1972 650 and the float was sticking in the bow and i got new one they have better ones out. i found out too that i look in side of the engine and found that some of the reves that broke off ..after i replace them the engine ran great ! no more gasoline was coming out of the front of the cab's ..what you want to see is to see the gasoline siteing blow the jet .. this is with the engine off not runing pump up the cab's and look inside of thre cab's at the jet
and look at the jet to make sure you see no gasoling is runing out of the jet with the engine off ... if you see gasoling runing out of the jet you have to reset the floats..i know this is some times a pain in the ass ... ones you get that all done you will see she will come live and you will be one happy boater agian !.. i do have a video of my 1972 runing on the tenn river ....
@geo436 Warm up your motor with muffs, and adjust Carb idle screw one at a time.Idle should drop on either carb,or run rough.Turn idle back up on each.Idle screws on each should be 1 to 1 1/2 turns out from closed. If that doesn't do it,rebuild each carb with complete kits. That solved my problem!
I have an 18' fiberglass runabout with a 1964 Merc 650 (4 cyl) and a 15" pitch prop... WOT tops out at 23 MPH. YMMV. I have a couple of videos here on YouTube.
As close as I can figure, (no GPS) 38-40mph. Hard to believe I bought (stole) this rig for $500 2 years ago. Other than doing the reguler stuff to it like fuel pump and carb overhaul, I had to replace the lower unit. $75 on ebay. It's been nothin' but a blast since.
Never had a lik of trouble with it.

@geo436 Also,if you have one,or both carbs that drip fuel, replace floats, needle and seats.

Awesome. People love to trash those old Merc triples, but yours not only goes like stink, it's held up just fine.
